yup we always worry when he gets a sore period or has trouble getting around for a bit ... but then I think this bloody dog is so tough he'll be blind, deaf, cripple and 20 years old before he kicks it

Well for a dog we didnt expect to make it to his first birthday... it's now his 3rd To the goofiest, biggest and most crooked rottweiler ever a big happy birthday! and a plate of KFC Who would have thought this tiny thing would grow into such a great dog (even if he does pick fights with the DDB, chew and eat underwear and insists on causing mischeif CONSTANTLY ;))

any dog that loses weight quickly you need a dog coat, and one that covers the chest and right down to the tail. http://www.whippetwear.com/ this lady is in melbourne, check out her designs. We have a whippet at dog club that just drops the weight so quickly, a well fitting coat has helped a lot.

if you're getting the runs on advance wait until you feed Pal ... Too rich my butt, I'd be putting her onto a better brand like Eagle Pack or Royal Canin and feed small amounts twice a day. That and feed some pet mince or raw meaty bones to tighten the poo. I know guide dog org told a guide dog owner to feed their dog some hills z/d with heaps of boiled rice. Poor dog had so little protein in her system she was exhausted.

I would love to know who said that. There are enough working line Mal breeders in Australia to make noise trust me.

mites, fleas, skin infection of bacteria or fungus, diet, stress etc your friend should be taking the dog straight to a vet for a full work up and check.

Lip Licking And Food Obsession
Nekhbet replied to flycow's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I wouldnt mind the behaviour if it didnt come with slurping and gulping noises, and the fact every time he licks something he makes this huge clicking noise with his teeth. I tell you it can rouse you from the deepest slumber at 3am when rottie decides he needs to lick himself -
what the? Who told you that?! darn tootn I am ... hows about I just leave my Malinois tied to the gate and if you can get past her you can take him home
-
she wont get the vicks in her eyes, the smell will stop her putting her face anywhere near it, or deep heat/crib stop. Its just so she doesnt use her teeth to remove them. She sounds like digging is just her thing and stopping her would definately be for her safety

if you have a dog to catch rabbits when they bolt the hole its not illegal from what I can see. You need a good sighthound wth a soft mouth though If you want to farm rabbits New Zealand whites are the way to go. Big litters, good mums and plenty of meat. I would be building a frame hutches you can move about the lawn to allow the rabbits exercise, fresh air and a food source. They need a concentrate feed source (Barastoc make rabbit pellets in 20kg bags) good grass hay for roughage and plenty of water. Rabbits are not good in extreme temperatures especially heat so you have to make provisions for that or you will lose animals especially young. Hence why rabbits live in climate controlled burrows As for parasite control, I would worm the mothers but not bother at all with the babies. You will be gutting them anyway so there is no risk of parasites. I sometimes see worm cysts in thhe rabbit muscle when I skin them, those go straight into the rubbish bin. You can buy small animal wormers from pet stores or just use some ivermectin based pour on. Rabbits are a great source of meat but too lean to be an exclusive protein source. There is a condition called rabbit starvation from eating way too much rabbit and not much else so investigate that thoroughly, takes a rabbit exclusive diet to cause it though.

There is also the OurVet clinics within the Best Friends chain of stores (all owned by the Good Guys) I should know I wrote the manual

dogs dont blame themselves. THey learn either through classical or operant conditioning and you're relying on the fact the dog would receive a stim every time she started to dig hence positively punished for trying to dig. It could work but I wouldnt be telling someone whos dog you havnt seen to simply zap it with an e-collar or man handle it when you dont know the exact temperament of the dog or the capabilities of the owner.

There isnt recognition but even these not ANKC breeds have worked to genetically test and recognise their stock, provide their own pedigree paperwork etc for their animals. Most members are also working towards a goal not just breeding whatever. I know a breeder prefix is not a guarentee of ethics, I have proof of that lounging about my house right now. But if 'ethical' people want to be so called why not join and make their own behaviour an example? Why limit what lines and genetics you can use to provide the healthiest pups possible in the long term? Because it costs money and takes effort. Then what about those pups going on to be bred from. And their pups (if we get that far) An ethical breeder is one that breeds under best practice for the health of not only the immediate stock, but ensuring quality pups and further progeny that have the ability to contribute to a healthy gene pool in AUstralia. Anyone who doesnt think that far is simply a BYBer. Remember ethics and personal beliefs are two different things.

oh so she's related to my rottweiler ... ooh ahh my legs oh the pain, woe is me .. HEY FOOD! *runs skidding and crashing out the door*

what the ... Agree with poodlefan x 100. If the dog is already in the process of digging and you run out and abuse it in this manner what have you taught it - nothing. Dog thinks you're a lunatic attacking it for no good reason. Dogs dont simply lunge at each other randomly All you achieve is a dog that will be unsure and actually see you LESS as a leader because you're random and inconsistant. If you want to stop behaviours like this you have to block access when unsupervised and when supervised stop the behaviour right when she shows interest in digging not while she's half way to the water pipes. Like I said try the tough booties or put down the concrete weldmesh over the lawn and let that grow around it. You should be able to pick that up cheaply at metal recyclers or wholesalers

I dont understand why someone would go to all that trouble and not be a registered breeder. Not being registered limits her access to registered dogs and bloodlines so in essence all she can really use is dogs she swindles from registered breeders (or buys from unethical ones as no ethical reg breeder would sell a dog to be used for unregistered breeding) or unregistered dogs of dubious background. Health testing goes back more then just doing the basic tests on your current breeding stock. To me, it's still not totally kosher. Ethics has more to do then just raising puppies well and health testing your immediate stock. She's still breeding for profit as she can not use her dogs for the betterment of the breed and gene pool as a whole.

Question For Dog Trainers
Nekhbet replied to lovemesideways's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I got it through training my own dogs and helping other people do it on a non professional basis I also read a lot of articles and books and had been a vet nurse before running a puppy preschool -
when something puts you out of pocket and is costing you more money then you are making on it then it is a luxury. If at the end of a long term period it does pay of more then you have put into it then it is a worthwhile investment but the way the economy goes and the length of morgages these days it may not. I know the owner of my house bought it for a very low price and along with his other properties they are doing well for him. He's also going to knock down this house and build units which will increase the properties value at least 5-6 times what he paid for it.

eh working line Malinois vs commodore interior. she's even ripped the spare tyre up out of the well it sits in. My fault for not crating her as she's trained never to burst one of those (thank christ) I'd want to see the dog and the situation before e-collar. I'd be seeing whats in the soil too, there could be something in there driving her bananas and encouraging her to dig. barking at birds though is usually prey drive towards a moving stimulus. Once thats cemented that is a pain to try and fix at times especially in active easily stimulated working breeds. Actually I'm surprised thats one thing my Malinois doesnt care about

Question For Dog Trainers
Nekhbet replied to lovemesideways's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I started through word of mouth and some basic advertising. I offered the same as what I do now, I didnt want to start half hearted as your reputation often preceeds you. I had previous experience in working dogs and their training, I did the NDTF course to fill in the gaps and show me techniques I didnt really have access to at the time. You can never read too many books, attend too many seminars and just keep learning! -
Thank you megan nice of you to explain the method in the supposed madness of investments. My relatives are all european so really investment houses were more bought for when the kids moved out and married, not to be for rentals. I think its more my generation that is starting to do the investment property for tax purposes and rental thingy As for super it's always been a squirrel away the cash for investment type idea as a safer option. OK well someone bothered to explain why its a better option. I dont expect anything. I pay to lease my house it hence this is a business transaction with responsibilities on both sides. Expectation means I rock up on a doorstep and want it for free - and I've never done that. I keep the place well kept and even pay for minor repairs out of my own pocket its only fair when you rent I figuire. Where did I complain about rent prices? I complained about disporportionately high house prices and people going along with them. I'm a student and stuck in a shitty job while I try and patch my life and sanity back together ... so when I can comfortably afford my own home I will. By why stop you when you're on a rant Raz, let it out diddums. Can't take that type of lip from the poorer classes expected to be supported by fine upstanding citizens like yourself now can we.

Lip Licking And Food Obsession
Nekhbet replied to flycow's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
oh my rottie licks his lips. Its a PITA when I'm in the kitchen he rushes over, quickly does a perfect sit then starts licking his lips and gluping like he's about to get everything on the stove or plate. He's so food obsessed. Shits me to tears actually I just hate the noise He's quiet for food rewards now as I give them to him as a surprise. I dont use a clicker the dogs got too distracted by it :D dont have "I have food in my hand/pocket" body language and see how that works too. -
if you're just after drive training then contact the clubs directly, they should be able to let you know or point you to a trainer/school who does. Try and get your hands on some Ivan Balabanov DVDs they're awesome !
-
what would happen if you put dog boots on her and then rubbed some vicks on them in order to stop her trying to remove them? Unfortunately self rewarding behaviours can be like that. You do everything you can and it sticks. Trust me my OH has been in your shoes when the rottie has done something stupid. And he cracked it when the dogue decided to smash another garage window the day before Oh and dont forget how I felt when my Malinois shredded the entire rear interior of my car.

GSDC got it done.
