  1. people seem to think feeding dogs like it's a goat is the way to go ... lower the protein and fat and increase the starches/carbs. Quickest way to an unfit, unhealthy, low muscle tone dog. Dogs are not us, they're not horses, or cows, or pigs. They need meat and fat to have energy and to build muscle. Lower the protein content too much and you soon have a dog that cant really get about much due to fatigue.
  2. The OP is feeding 1 1/2 cups of Supercoat to an adult labrador. Any less then that is just becoming rediculous, the weight wont peel off fast with supercoat due to the grain content. My grandparents dog I switched to Royal Canin light, it started peeling off and he was eating almost double what he ate of the supercoat. why? If raw is cheaper and works better why not do it. The dog only has 5kg to lose which can be done in under a couple of weeks, its not a dog going through the growing phase. Two meals a day filled with raw grated vegetables in a starving dog will keep him full at a price below even a budget food yet at a better quality.
  3. considering her level you need to call a behaviourist to help you out with it before you or the other dog get bitten or she escalates to other items
  4. get him off the supercoat light, that doest strip weight off at all. Every dog I've seen on that stuff is pudgy due to the grain content roo mince, cooked veg and a bit of bran for fibre in two meals, conversely use the Vets All Natural mix. He still needs a decent amount of protein in his diet at his age and the supercoat is woeful for that
  5. wants annual vacs with your dog or the dog you are adopting? noone can force you to do anything with a dog once you have purchased it

  7. the dutchie crosses are not old enough to be this dog. Banjuicy you seem to be intent your dog is a dutch shepherd. Considering its size and where it came from your chances are slim to none. Either way you have not seem to have saught a trainer who can help you with the trouble you seem to be having with the dog - you dont need a dutchie specialist you need a trainer who knows about herding dogs. Dutchies here are not herders by the way they're civil dogs for protection.
  8. you wont get fat eating apples, you can live solely on them and still lose weight.
  9. I had the same experience at Melbourne. THey said your dog is ready, its the big red one yeah? I said yes, so they presented me with a red heeler in a crate. I said where is my dog, they said this is your dog. No mine is a mastiff. 15 minutes later they found him, he was still on the plane and apparently terrifying ... 7 1/2 month old DDB puppy lolling about making happy snuffly noises and they were too scared to go near him the idiots. Lucky I was there and kept demanding for the dog it was over 40 degrees that day
  10. we let people know at dog club super fast. It's not fair for a dog to be running around for an hour, going over agility etc and carrying so much extra weight.
  11. what diet is the dog eating at the moment? As for losing 5kg, you can shed that quickly feed 2 tiny meals a day, cut the food back a lot and it will drop off in no time. Dogs wont starve to death in fact a day without food wouldnt kill a lot of dogs I know. ETA by the way a training treat needs to be the size of your little fingernail NOT a chunk at a time. It's literally a taste hence why people use such flavourful foods.
  12. play is a dogs way of exploring and building drive Kirty I gave you a link on toys, dont give a greyhound that lives with a cat fluffy things to destroy.
  13. do they vomit the food or fluid only? what else do they get fed if you dont have this on hand
  14. e-collar and someone who knows how to use it properly
  15. He just sounds like an undersocialised herding breed. Dogs dont have to be mistreated in order to exhibit shying or nervous behaviours at all. I've seen beaten dogs that are confident as heck, and extremely shy or frightened ones that have never had a hand raised to them.
  16. nawww Jeff you know I'd take him in a heart beat *cootchy cootchy coo!*
  17. you can have prey and play Steve is right, you are not actually killing the drive the dog potentially has, you're just supressing it. Some people manage to the point of total avoidance or a dog that has no ability to engage which is through how it is brought up/trained.
  18. cepacol is fine to use on wounds at the concentration in mouthwash. Can irritate the skin in sensitive individuals
  19. its just a bitsa ... if it had dutchy in it 1) I would be VERY surprised and 2) the temperament would be the complete opposite As for training join a school, he needs socialising and to be taught how to control his nerves and play with toys.
  20. your dog does no develop a resistance to antibiotics, the target bacteria potentially do. If your dog needs them, she needs them to simply prevent the spread of nasty bacteria, which love oxygen free environments like puncture wounds Deeper wounds that I cant pull open regularly I will give antibiotics too to avoid a potential abcess festering underneath or a systemic infection If you dont want to take her, keep picking the scab off to allow the air in, and make an iodine solution the colour of weak tea and squirt it into the puncture when it looks goopy.
  21. there is not much you can do but keep him lean, feed him appropriate food and dont push the exercise. Puppies are great at being uncoordinated though If you're worried in a few months time you can speak to the vet and get PennHip x-rays done if it is starting to get in the way of his movement or causing pain
  22. you need to appreciate your dogs more ... a dog with such a good mouth it can pick up a mouse and let it go without causing it harm ... what do you think they were bred for not attacking the animals they herd thats for sure Diesel you have the same thing too do you not, herding breed dont do that, thats horrific. If you dont know how to dispatch of mice quickly you're best to let them go far away from your place. Gas them, break their neck/spine etc but dont squash, freeze or drown its a terribly way to die
  23. she doesnt want to make waves but you have every right to. take photos and report her to the ranger and RSPCA for being so horribly cruel. This idiot needs to be shut down. As for causing waves, ask this owner if the groomer had beaten her dog with a stick to this point would she hesitate to report it? Evil happens when good people do nothing. Meanwhile tell your friend to take the dog to the vet ASAP. filthy clipper blades that slash skin could be carrying bacteria from other dogs wounds/matted fur or even fecal matter that this woman has now ploughed into her dogs skin. It risks massive infection and needs a vet NOW.
  24. I must admit I am yet to meet a viszla that was calm enough for a family and that a couple of short runs a day would satisfy it. I also agree some boxers can be hard to train compared to many other breeds, not all of them are able to switch off in either breed. Its another thing that comes down to the right lines and relying on the breeder to find the right pup for you. Find decent Viszla/Boxer breeders with good trainable and sane dogs you will be on the right track. german shepherds and dobermanns dont grow to 50+kg. But it all depends if you and your wife don't mind something like a dobermann. Some lines would be no more difficult to train then your average pedigree boxer and they are very fit dogs without the brachycephalic problems (squished in face) and they adore their families. One owner on here got herself a Belgian Shepherd Groenendael I think it came from Midniara down in Tassie? I myself have the short hair Belgian Malinois but there is no way I would recommend that to you at all. There is difference between the varieties you would want the Groenendael (black) or the Tervuren (black and tan long hair) I still wouldnt discount something like a cattle dog, even a low drive border collie if you want the smaller end of the dog scale.
