This head shot was the 50mm 1.8 This movement shot was 18-200 eta the cocker was sharpened though wasnt happy with focus and shadows.

Im pretty happy with my 18-200 VR its not THE BEST lens ever, its worth around 950-1000, enough zoom for movement shots across the ring etc. I shoot at shows too, and yea, i've had a few good ones. I use a 50mm 1.8 for portraits, if you tell me your budget, perhaps that will help. I dont think its much use getting a 70-300, the 18-200 covers heaps and its great for close in shots too. Its also light. What do you have already?

what colour was the subject in the dark photo. Its great that you are using manual. Keep fiddling around and reading your data.

Camera lighting 'metering' or sensors if you like are very sensitive and even if you turn in another direction 90 degrees or less the lighting will change. Depending on where your subject is or what light is in its background. Can you tell us what settings they were? Auto ISO sucks IMO and could be the reason your camera was changing the lighting. Have a look at the exif data on a good one and a dark one, can you tell us what they were if you cant load the pics?

hmmm on the nikon, with mf there is a dot that stay's solid when the subject is in focus (around focus points anyway) and flashes if it cant or is out of focus. Cant help you with the Canot
