Hunter, Where are you located in Cairns? If it is close to where I work I may be able to work something out. Min is at home from about 8:30am until 5:10pm every day - sometimes mum comes home from work for lunch and she gets 1/2 hour play time then as well. She doesn't mind being home all day though - our back patio area is brilliant and is always in shade and heaps cooler than anywhere else. She also has an arctic mat to sleep on to cool her down when summer really hits - and if we have any 35+ days, the tiled area will have a baby gate across it and she can stay in there in aircon for the day.

Hunter, where abouts in Cairns are you? I'd offer to help, but I work 8 - 6 during the week so wouldn't be able to pop around for you. Might be able to figure something out though. I don't think there are many dog minders as such around here - I haven't found anyone or heard of anyone so far.

Thanks Schnauzer I'm biased, but I think so too. I think the votes for the Andis clippers are way ahead now - time to get serious about looking! -
Do You Clip Your Own Doggie?

Ah, thanks Poodlefan - had never heard of it before. I'll probably keep Min longish (like a 10 blade) as she's not going back in the ring (has lost her bum and her right foot turns out something shocking) and I don't want her getting sunburnt up here. She'll be good for me to practice on though. In a few years when I get my show boy they'll be kept inside so he doesn't get sunburnt during the day - but from everything said, he'll need to be a 15 blade anyway :D Here's a pic of Min that was taken a week ago (almost) - Please forgive the bad stack - I was actually in the process of setting her up when the photo was taken. ETA - sorry to hijack your thread Becky! -
Do You Clip Your Own Doggie?

Poodlefan and Lowenhart - thank you!! I've kept my girl in the lion clip as an 'advert' for the breed - people always comment and ask what she is when they see the clip and I love being able to tell them about a lowchen. When she's in full coat people tend to assume she's a mixed breed mutt and don't care (apart from the 'she's cute' comments). My current groomer does her on a 10 but that doesn't take it back to skin - no idea what brand of clippers she's using either. I've been told a few times since I posted in this thread that Oster or Andis are the way to go - I always thought Wahl was one of the top brands but seems people don't like them as much anymore?. I will keep an eye out for some 2nd hand ones to start with I think and see how I go from there. As an aside, I have been checking out your site often Lowenhart - it's one of my favourites when I need a Lowchen fix :D -

Lowchen. There's some good information around about how to do the actual clip, which I'll end up printing and looking at. But as to what clippers I need, what blades I need, whether I need scissors etc, if I need more combs/brushes than I have, do you really need the toe attachment to clippers etc etc, I can't find good information for that. Most of the info tends to be aimed at people who know the basics and want to learn a specialised clip, rather than someone just starting out. Edited to add - I'm beginning to think I should just bite the bullet, buy a set of clippers off ebay and go from there - but that's a pretty expensive way to do it if I get the wrong clippers etc. -
Do You Clip Your Own Doggie?

As someone that is just starting to look into doing my own clipping - I am overwhelmed. I have NO idea where to start, what I will need, how to do anything. I've watched the groomer so I kinda have some idea on the how to clip, but she does it differently to the last groomer and so on and so forth. ARGH! -
Minnie gets a couple of spoonfulls of Nature's Gift and whatever pieces of my toast I deign to give her for breakfast and dinner is either a cup of kibble (good quality one) with a small tin of tuna or a cup of a mix I do myself - pasta, vegges, meat etc that changes every time I make it. She'll also get 4 - 5 chicken necks or a small frame 1 - 2 times a week instead of dinner and 2 chicken necks as I feel like it.

How To Get My Dogs To Love Me?
tramissa replied to daniel83's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
A stern 'no' would achieve the same thing. Would you like someone who constantly smacked you? Stop smacking the dogs, start taking on some feeding duties. Spend time walking/patting/playing with them. You may find this will really help -
Same GB - Must be a NQ thing
-
Should be able to get them at coles or woolies BL - if they don't have any there it's coz they've sold out. Maybe try IGA or any food store like that.

Myszka, there is no doubt in the minds of anyone that have seen Minnie and I together that that dog trusts me with her life and thinks I am her sun, moon and stars. That is just the type of personality she has. She will not go if any dog or human is near her. I can be now, but I am the only one and that took me at least 2 months to achieve.
-
Myszka - Minnie still won't go in front of strangers and took her a couple of months to go in front of me!! I used to have to turn my back or hide before she'd go Weird dogs.

RIP Miss Jenny. What a beautiful way to go - loved by many, peaceful in her sleep.

Go into the laundry, sit quietly (i.e. don't move) and speak softly to him. He will come to you in his own time. Let him explore you first before you try and make a move. Don't pat his head - this can be threatening if he's not sure of you. Try his chest or side (near the top of his front leg etc). Take treats in with you and put one on the ground in front of you, then on you, then on your hand etc. But importantly, take each step slowly and don't force him Good luck.

I only just found this. I am so sorry Boxa RIP Barkly - your mummy loved you very much.

So Sorry :p

I just posted this in another topic. I'm in Cairns. I get a lion clip done, full wash, nail, ears, blow dry etc for $25. And they are mobile so it's all done in my own yard.

I didn't get a chance to ask you about this the other day - bloody work. I didn't realise it was so bad Pix Give K a big kiss and hug from me. Hope you find something that will help.

Uncontrollable Urge To Pee. Stops On Vomit
tramissa replied to Erny's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I haven't been able to sit and catch up on this thread for a while with the move and all but you and Kal have still been on my thoughts. What wonderful angels you and Kal have - your gut instinct is the strongest ally you have and you are using it well. Amazing the way things will go - Tim coming out, the vet in the USA, the seizure stopping the surgery (otherwise the above would not have happened more than likely). Sending lots of love and prayer to both of you Erny. -
Sentinel spectrum tablets + preventix collar (if you can stand the peppermint smell). Works a treat for everything.
