You also need to consider long-term health. A dog may seemingly do well on any food and appear healthy in the short term, but it can take a number of years to see the real consequences. Even people who feed a home-cooked or raw diet can have trouble if they're not feeding the correct balance and nutrients.

Yep, I think that's the point. It doesn't take much to get a good understanding about the food you're feeding your dog, so if you care about your pets then why wouldn't you? If any of my reviews raise awareness with pet owners then I get satisfaction for that, but there'll always be people willing to criticise just for the sake of it - sadly - although I'm always open to feedback, comments, and constructive criticism.

Feeding a variety is a great thing, especially if you can feed your pup some wholesome foods and fresh meat to compliment the dry diet.

It's also toxic to humans, but you don't offer hear of anyone suffering ill effects from eating potato? Have you heard of any incident with a dog suffering ill effects from solanin? Not forgetting the kibble is cooked, and you're assuming a significant amount of green potatoes are in a food.

When a dog food is labelled "active" it just means it's higher protein (and possibly higher in fat). Chicken is a great protein source and cheap too, which is why it's so common. Higher protein foods are Canidae, Holistic Select, TOTW, Artemis, Ivory Coat (keeps popping up), Earthborn Holistic (GF), and your more expensive offerings from ZiwiPeak and Sunday Pets which are high protein dried/baked. From those you're probably looking at Canidae (great company), Ivory Coat, Earthborn Grain Free... all have high protein recipes without chicken.

That's fine if you have a small dog, but can get very expensive with a larger dog or more than one dog. People simply can't afford it. Potato isn't a bad ingredient and there's certainly a lot worse. Obviously it doesn't sit well for every dog, but a pet food manufacturer can't cater for all.

I'm interested too..! Sueang - This food is actually very low in carbs and high in meat protein. Peas don't contribute a significant amount of protein in this case.

Sad to see, but will manufacturing cease to be in Australia? The recipes may change accordingly. Usually when a group buys up a pet food they try and cut production costs (ingredients) to increase profit.

My review might help - VIP Natures Goodness Grain Free. It's not a bad food, but generally I find Black Hawk better.

There's been rumours about Wellness CORE in the US making dogs ill, possibly from a few bad batches. Nothing substantiated though. Canidae's a great company, good food. Worth a try.

Well after all that I'm glad you've finally found a food that suits TOTW is a good quality food, you could always give it a try at some point see if he's ok with it. At least for now you've found a food he can eat.

I didn't say that either. I asked if anyone fed this food and what their opinions were. I wasn't after an argument, I didn't expect one, and I don't wish to participate in one.

This is a review of Purina Beneful by a consumer on Amazon: Sounds like a good food to me. People would definitely buy it based on that review, don't you think? In contrast, I've had literally 100s of people email me with stories about Beneful making their dogs sick and how they wished they'd researched the food sooner. It doesn't take much to realise what a bad food that is, but most people have no idea and would happily feed it in blissful ignorance to a dog they cherish.

Wow. Firstly, I never said the amount of "likes" a company had on Facebook had any relevance to the quality of the food. If you believe a good food is one your dog "does well on", then I find that really naive. If you had no knowledge about McDonalds you'd happily feed it to your children every day because they "did well on it" and their poop was consistent? Nope, I'm not looking to base a review on other people's opinions.

They're simple ingredients which is likely the reason your dog's doing well on it. Normally I don't recommend Natural Balance as all their foods are very grain heavy, and the bulk of the protein in this food will come from the sorghum. Kangaroo digest isn't pleasant either.
