Vent: Why Do People Get A Pup Without Really Thinking It Over
Jemmy replied to Scottsmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm currently biting my tongue over a post on a buy swap and sell page. It's for Maltese x poodle, but of course they've smooshed the name together. Someone has asked if it's a recognised breed, and have been told yes! Then another person mentioned about it being a 'designer breed' (in a negative way) and was shot down. -
I do love LAT, it's given me a lot of confidence as well. I used to worry about her reacting, now I try and use each scenario as a training situation. Most of our 'stares' these days come from handler error in mistiming the click/treat delivery, and general fumble hands Anyway, there is definitely hope for you Montana, and hopefully your trainer can give you confidence as well! Edit for phone typos

My trainer gave me a tip that if I'm desperate to break a stare, throw the treat across your dog's line of sight. I also carry our favourite tug in my walking bag, use that to get our u-turn done, then once at a safe distance reward with the game of tug. Breaking the stare seems to be critical with my girl.

Re: the exercising. My girl has been spooked by a few encounters where off lead dogs have rushed us, etc. We walk in off peak times, I will drive her to new areas so she can get a good sniff in because she loves to smell things. I pick long straight streets so I can see if someone is coming, if they are I have an emergency u-turn, and go down a side street until they've passed. We're working with a trainer and she's made great progress, but I make sure I set her up for success by giving her more distance from strange dogs on walks than I would expect from her at training. For example at training she can walk less than 5m distance away from another dog with no reaction at all. On a walk I give her more space than that as its not a time to push the boundaries. I also do lots of trick training - asking her to touch to break her stare (my girls first reaction is a stare, and will then escalate to a bark) Good luck!

Ohhh, some of those make me sad. Great finds though!

Haha, Luna's birthday is next week, but I justified it by she doesn't know when her actual birthday is... Really I just have no patience whatsoever :)

Mine arrived today I love it - Luna isn't super interested yet but she's had a big afternoon of training and is tired. She did like the way it rolls, the battery side is obviously a bit heavier so it has a more erratic roll than a standard round treat dispenser. Just wasn't really keen on eating any kibble or treats that came out of it, and the past 3 bells she's woken up, looked around, and gone back to sleep I'll try it tomorrow when she's not zonked, but I'm personally very happy with the product so far

I'm pretty sure the litter my pup came from was taken to some breed club outings, but then those are known dogs. I'd consider it a bit risky just going to the beach!

I'm pleased I'm not the only one who found it distressing. Poor dog!

Article I saw this article linked on facebook today, it made my heart hurt. I'm not sure what the etiquette is on opinion pieces in the news section, so I hope this is ok!

The Adventures Of Ronin And Tigger - Update 29/05/17
Jemmy replied to Yonjuro's topic in General Dog Discussion
I'm just paused while it's buffering, but I'm about 30 seconds in - love the slow mo and getting to see Ronin's tongue flopping about. They're so happy :) -
OK I placed my order, the price was just too good. Hopefully it gets here in time for my little woofers birthday!

Only accepting cash isn't a red flag to me, most breeders wouldn't be set up with a merchant facility, and bank transfer or cheque present more risk for both involved. I would also just send through an email like "hi x, thought you'd like to know pup is doing well. Do we have a time frame on when pups registration papers will come through? The best mailing address for them is xxxx" Then if they reply saying your pup is not/will not be registered, then you can act from there. Good luck!

I am so tempted right now. I haven't been able to figure out, can you put different treats in there (so like first dispense kibble, second dispense treats etc)?

When I bought my house the deposit was held in an account by the real estate and only released at settlement. This is in Tassie though. My lender and my conveyancer were what got me through. I left a voicemail for a conveyancer that had been recommended to me on a Saturday morning, asking if she would represent us. She phoned us back within an hour, and had emailed the real estate by the time we got to their office. We hadn't expected to make an offer so soon but the house caught us by surprise and we couldn't let it pass. In future I'd definitely have the conveyancer BEFORE making an offer

I'm no expert, but I'd imagine if you're able to get a deposit bond, then it's really none of the agents business what's going on with your deposit funds. Have you already spoken to your bank about the deposit bond?

Ruthless leather are closed at the moment, but they open in Feb and I think they're your best bet for what you're looking for. I'm in the market too, I've signed up on their website to be notified by email when they reopen :)

I've been thinking about getting one of these: Water Rover Edit: It doesn't meet the insulated or stainless steel requirement though!

Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread
Jemmy replied to megan_'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It's quiet in here! How is everyone doing? We're going well, she's shown real progress in class. I'm going to book a private session to look at her barking at home, she seems to get herself quite worked up - she'll stop barking but will then do laps around the yard or the house. -
That's so "tailsist". I'm not sure I would call it love, but what ever it is, it's wonderful. Nova has things he does for/with me that he doesn't do with other people. He is friendly with everyone, but if there are multiple people in the house (and he's already said his hellos and calmed down), he will place himself next to me. He doesn't really listen to other people if they give him commands, but I'm not sure if that's his affection for me or just that I'm the one who trains/feeds him. When I had housemates they informed me that when I leave the house he will every now and then look out the front door or window, will sleep next to the door. Even though he grew up with my housemate too, he never displayed any "missing" behaviours when she would go away, there has been zero behaviour differences in him since she moved out too. Ohhhhh I do love the peering out the window. It melts my heart to walk back from the shop and see her waiting at the window for me... Even though the fun parent is still home with her!

3 glasses of wine down and I just cannot even cope with this
-
I think my dog loves me. The level of body wiggle when I get home is a sight to behold. I'm not even the fun parent! She probably loves my OH more than me, he's the fun parent and if he so much as shifts his weight she's awake and ready to go on an adventure with him. I get a lot of joy out of her, and I think she gets a lot of joy out of us.

Thanks Ish, she's certainly not overweight :) I'll have a feel of a bag of the Adult next time I'm at Petbarn and see if I think the kibble will fit in her treat balls
