Exercising Reactive Dogs Thread

Happy update here :) At dog class madam was an angel, we even had some play bows and no frustrated barking when the play bow didn't get her play time with other dogs. I was so proud of her. This morning she had a bark at an off lead white fluffy on our walk, but it's a little jerk who snaps at her through her own gate, so I'm not sure if she was barking because it's a dog, or because it's THAT dog. Then we went down to the self service dog wash and there was a dog in one of the enclosures already... She didn't stiffen up or get her stare on, just kind of did a whole body tail wag and then kept on going with me. And on a side note, she can be a devil to bath because she likes to try and bite the water. But today she was so good! Maybe she knows Santa is watching? I understand it's still going to be a lot of work yet, but weekends like this one make it all worthwhile give me hope that I haven't completely failed her with some early training mistake. Edited to change my wording above. -

I use the term class loosely, at the moment there's only one other student dog/handler pair, so it's almost one on one the trainer always brings a couple of her dogs so we can switch it up... It's a lot of LAT with various stimulus. What I love is being able to do LAT and know exactly what the other handler is doing. In the park on our own I worry someone might ignore the fact I'm training and head towards us. Edit: i forgot to mention I always have to Google BAT because I forget what it stands for and try and work it out from the LAT acronym. But "bark at that" just doesn't seem right, haha -

Welcome! This thread is great, so many ideas. The support is second to none as well. Hope your meet goes well! @bccrazy - sorry you aren't well, but it's nice that Stella is recognising it and adjusting her pace. What a sweet girl. @hankdog - how are you doing? I saw that your new harness was short lived... Who knew Jake was made of jelly? I hope the ruffwear one works well for you, I have their less intense one and the buckles are very sturdy... I understand your apprehension with them though! I found on my version any pulling strain is through the non buckle area, which has made me feel better. @terri - how is Didi doing now? Did she cope OK at the vet recently? Our reactive dog class has been going well, sometimes Luna has taken to just laying down while the other dogs walk around! Crazy pup. We're working at a much larger distance on our own during the week, but I've got a lot more confidence, and I think in our situation that's half the battle. Sorry for any errors, it's so hard to proof read on the phone... And sorry if I missed anyone! -

Congratulations! -
What a wonderful, well loved life he lived though.

I feel like the ad is a good reminder that if you're looking for a new family member, there's dogs at the pound who are missing their family and don't know what they did wrong to get there. That's what I took away from it anyway.

I'm not in Sydney, but both petshops in my town in Tassie sold them, so I'd say there's a high chance somewhere near you does. My local Petbarn stocks them, even though they weren't on their website so it may be worthwhile just giving a couple of places a call. Edited for spelling

I don't think you needed to bump this thread that's been quiet for 2 weeks to make this post...

It's the name

I made my own flirt pole, there's some Internet how to's but it was essentially bungee cord, and a bit of pvc plumbing pipe (not sure of the technical term, but it all came from bunnings). I tie on one of her existing toys, and off we go!

+1 - this whole post was perfectly worded

I love this thread so much, almost as much as the Rottie puppy thread! -
Happy belated gotcha day! What a handsome boy :)

I'm looking at getting either a kyjen squeaky toy or a tuffee - the tuffee appeals because apparently the squeak is a bit muffled? Haha I was waiting on shipping from clean run as well, but have ended up just going with things from local websites :) Oh and I have a syntek collar in Orange - it's vibrant and I love it :) #enabling

I hope you're doing OK this evening hankdog, what a horrible thing to experience. I understand your hesitation with calling the council, I hope the other dogs owner is more responsible in the future! -
My GSD gets so offended when I brush her trousers, haha. I should have started when she was tiny, I underestimated how fluffy a butt she would get and she's only 10 months!

That looks fantastic, well done and very secure
-
I second this... Please can we have some more? Lol

Haha, you had me going too! So cute :)

He is just so gorgeous! Those Christmas photos are fantastic :)

This sounds amazing, sadly I'm not in the area but hope it goes well! -
I can understand being taken aback by some of the requests, but I hope all the stories here encourage you to proceed - if you'd been talking to this breeder for a longer period they may not have lumped it all on you at once. Probably things they always find out but were running out of time? Good luck!
