http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-04-21/greyhound-racing-rspca-push-for-end-to-public-funds/6408918 "Greyhound racing: Canberra's RSPCA pushes for an end to public funding for local industry By Ewan Gilbert Updated about an hour ago A greyhound chases a live possum with its jaws wide open PHOTO: A live possum is used as bait as a part of a greyhound's race training regime in another state. (Supplied: Animals Australia) RELATED STORY: Greyhound racing officials pushing ahead with welfare levyRELATED STORY: RSPCA plays down allegations of mass greyhound burial in the Hunter ValleyRELATED STORY: Piglets, possums and rabbits used as live bait in secret greyhound training sessions MAP: Australia The RSPCA has ramped up its call for an end to taxpayer-subsided greyhound racing in the ACT, in the wake of rumours of live-baiting in the Territory. The RSPCA ACT said it received a number of tip-offs, following a Four Corners investigation in February that revealed the use of widespread live-baiting in the Australian greyhound industry. The organisation's chief executive officer, Tammy Ven Denge, said they did not have enough evidence to prosecute anyone locally. "However, to say it doesn't exist here would be very naive," Ms Ven Denge said. Ms Ven Denge said quite aside from the live-baiting issue, she believed taxpayers would be disappointed to learn of the ACT Government's ongoing financial support for the industry. "I've also had new information that the greyhound industry here in the ACT would not exist if the taxpayers weren't paying for it," she said. YOUTUBE: GRAPHIC FOOTAGE: Greyhounds 'live baited' with piglets, possums during training Last year the Territory Government provide funding to the ACT Greyhound Racing Club of $978,375. "The Government's actually keeping this industry alive in Canberra, which makes no sense," Ms Ven Denge said. "Why would the taxpayers want to support such an industry that's known for it's animal welfare concerns?" Ms Ven Denge said she had also contacted the Government with concerns over the regulation of the sport. "It's not even being regulated here in the ACT. It's Greyhound Racing New South Wales that's supposed to be regulating the ACT racing," she said. "We're going to have to decide if NSW is capable of governing our industry. "It's not being regulated by an independent body here, it's not being funded by itself...and it's an industry that's just full of all sorts of issues with animal welfare. "Should we even have the industry here? Why can't we as the Nation's capital take a stand?" Canberra Greyhound Racing ACT has been contacted for comment." Is the RSPCA finally standing up for what it is supposed to?

Thankyou for the posts. The vet did not mention Metacam. She did say though that cartrophen was not good for bone spurs. I have Rimadyl on hand if I need it. He doesn't seem too bad however. He's still a happy boy although sometimes he does find the steps difficult. What I have found interesting is that he likes to sleep fully stretched out and he doesn't like my other dog snuggling up. I realise now that he might have some pain.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-04-20/fresh-charges-laid-against-family-accused-animal-neglect/6406624?section=act Canberra family accused of 240 dog neglect offences face fresh charges By Matthew Doran Updated yesterday at 8:47pm Stefan Trpcevski PHOTO: Canberra man Stefan Trpcevski is facing more than 130 animal neglect charges. (Facebook) MAP: Canberra 2600 A Canberra family accused of hundreds of cases of animal neglect have had 20 fresh charges laid against them. Stefan Trpcevski, his mother Lidija Ski and brother Aleksander Ski are now facing more than 240 charges in total. More than 130 of those are against Stefan Trpcevski. The charges from late 2013 relate to dogs kept at properties in Liverpool Street in Macquarie and Lalor Street in Ainslie. They range from failing to provide food, water and exercise to the dogs, failing to register and de-sex the animals, and failing to seek veterinary treatment. There are also a number of charges relating to failure to comply with nuisance orders. Today, Prosecutor Katrina Mackenzie told the ACT Magistrates Court they have laid a further 20 charges against the family. But the trio are yet to be formally charged with the fresh offences, some of which amend previous charges. Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker has adjourned the matter until next month. At last someone is taking the ACT de-sexing laws seriously.

showdog your answers are always so informative. Thankyou. His is in the middle of his back. LG atm it is a relief to have a diagnosis. I just have to see how he copes with it. No running or jumping.

Not sure whether to start a new thread or just update this one. I took my old boy to the vet today for an x-ray and he has spondylosis/spondylitis (a bony spur on his spine) as well as arthritis in his elbow. Just wondering if anyone else has had experience with spondylosis/spondylitis. edited because not sure whether it is spondylosis or spondylitis

Dried cat food in an emergency. (My dog would steal it from the cat if she had the opportunity) It's really convenient, but is not good for dogs in large amounts. :) eta it's not messy either.

As Tassie says...you have to get your dog really good at verbal cues. I have just started doing my dancing training with the music playing & it definately motivates the dog & I am sure with enough practice the music would help to give the dog cues, just like it does with us humans :) Yes I wondered though about how some dogs can be trained to respond to different whistles and I thought that perhaps the dog was recognizing the music.

I wonder if the music is giving the dog cues. An amazing performance!

There is a first time poster, Raggedblossom, on last week's DAS thread trying to contact someone. This is the post: H there, there is a rescue wanting to take this boy but has had trouble getting in touch with the Pound. A Rescue email was sent on Tuesday with follow up calls with no replies. Can you advise what can be done to sort this out. Many thanks :) I am just wondering why it has not been answered. Maybe it has, or is this another example of a rescue not getting back? I am not sure which rescue he/she is trying to contact.

I want to thank everyone for their helpful posts. Yesterday we didn't go out because my girl was unwell during the night. This morning I started off with both and we went around the block and I did notice that my old boy was starting to tire. When we got back to the house I tied my girl up out the front and took the old boy inside and gave him a treat. I then took my girl for a longer walk. When we got back home the old boy was sound asleep on my lounge. I will also take them for a drive to a park and let the old boy potter around while I throw a ball for my younger one. So thanks everyone. Problem solved. :)

Is it only 64 year olds who need a back up plan or is it all potential adopters? Good point. I have a back up plan and I'm not 64. When I was involved in rescuing I rehomed a kelpie to a couple in their 70s. He was very active and walked miles every day. During the process we discussed what would happen if he was unable to walk the dog etc and they had already discussed this and had a back up plan which I was satisfied with. Thank you I have a back up plan but I am in my 70s. I also expect to live another 20 years as did my mother and both her sisters. Everyone should have a backup plan though.

Some rescues won't let you have a dog unless you have a doggy door.

It looks like the boy in Y31 at DAS. He has been transferred from the RSPCA. I don't know where the girl is. http://www.tams.act.gov.au/city-services/pets/keeping_dogs_in_the_act/lost,_found,_impounded_and_wanted_dogs/impounded_dogs?sq_content_src=%2BdXJsPWh0dHAlM0ElMkYlMkZ3d3cuZG9tZXN0aWNhbmltYWxzLmFjdC5nb3YuYXUlMkZJbXBvdW5kLmFzcCUzRkFjdGlvbiUzRFVQRF9JUCUyNlBvdW5kSWQlM0QzNjAyNyZhbGw9MQ%3D%3D

This is what I have done in the past. It does depend a lot on a dog's personality as to,the course of action you take. I like the idea of going to a park and let the younger ones run around and the older ones sniff around - but depends on other users of the park, other dogs etc. I agree with the points that dogs get used to a routine and often the excitement and running to the door/gate when leads are brought out is just habit. So we get the idea that the dog still wants to go for a walk, but really they are just acting out of habit, hence the slowing down not long after the start of the walk. A very interesting post DDD. You are right. I think he has been slowing down for a while and I have not noticed it. He tries to keep up, no matter what. Yes I need to rethink and reassess where he is at. He is very loved. About a month ago we had a thunderstorm and he ended up on my bed during the night. (My dogs usually sleep in their own beds.) So now he sleeps with me every night. He's a good boy though. He doesn't hog the bed. :)

Thank you Mita, my boy is a mixed breed around 12 kilos.

Thank you so much for all your wonderful replies. He's not bad enough yet for a pram. He starts off bouncing around and all excited, but he tires. Driving them to a park is a good idea. I will just have to experiment. I just love him so much and I hate seeing him struggling.

Thankyou Cazablanca. That is a good idea. I will try it but I hope my old boy is not upset when I leave him behind. Showdog, my old dog does get very stressed when left. My neighbour says he cries. I do have time for both. They are my life, but they have always gone for walks together. They enjoy each other's company. I hate seeing my old boy upset.
