  1. So much to think about. Abby is already used to the crate, so that is a bonus. But I have a feeling that she considers the lounge more appropriate for her comfort. Thankfully she is in decent shape, but she has already started on reduced meals as of last night to get her nice and lean. I have a small side yard which used to be my foster quarantine area, she will be able to toilet there and access the house easily which will limit her mobility.
  2. Thanks guys My head is already spinning with TTO's, TPLO's and a multitude of other acronyms. Thankfully if it was going to happen, then at least the timing isnt too bad. My teenage boys can mind her while I am at work for the next 2 weeks of school holidays and then I have annual leave starting straight afterwards. The crate has been dusted off, she now has a brand new soft bed and some painkillers to make her comfortable while she is waiting for her op.
  3. My beautiful 7yo rotty girl has done her cruciate today and I would like to hear from anyone with info on the success of the different operations for this type of injury. She is a big girl at 47kg and loves her walks and ball play, so I am looking for options that will give the best result without having to sell my soul for the next few years more than is necessary. thanks
  4. Not good. I am so sorry for all the DOL families involved ;)
  5. I will leave the training tips till the experts arrive, but in the meantime I would suggest starting on lowering his anxiety. I have had some good success with Dog Appeasing Pheromones and also tranquil paste.
  6. Sorry Erny I wouldnt like to continue guessing. If Mandela's blood tests come back with low vitamin and mineral levels or low red blood cell counts it will give some more direction for the search, and hopefully target an area. Lack of B group vitamins and anaemia will be in the results if it is an Intrinsic Factor issue. Ask about the B12 injections, if they wont harm him at least it is something easy to try while you are waiting for the blood test results.
  7. I am a student nurse, so no expert. My understanding is that with malabsorption (in humans) you want to start from the start and think of the proteins and gastric juices etc that do most of the breaking down in preparation for absorption into the body. Yes, if the process of breaking down food in the stomach and small intestine is not being performed properly then it cannot be absorbed through the intestines and bowel effectively and all those good vitamins will be wasted and just pass through. From my very brief googling the Intrinsic factor in dogs is mainly produced from the stomach and also pancreas. Lack of Intrinsic Factor seems to be an inherited trait. Intrinsic Factor and the absorption of B12 was a part of my last A&P exam. Ps: If the issue is a lack of Intrinsic Factor it can be treated but not cured with ongoing monthly B12 injections into muscle tissue.
  8. Lack of Intrinsic Factor from the stomach? S&S in humans are: Symptoms & Signs What are the signs and symptoms of the disease? A child with a congenital lack of intrinsic factor usually develops normally during the first 6 to 12 months of life. After this time, symptoms slowly begin and may include: irritability weakness developmental delays, in which the child progresses more slowly than usual in motor skills, language, or thinking diarrhea pale skin, or pallor decreased appetite
  9. Since the vet is one that was referred to you by a petshop, I am not surprised the cost is inflated. Go elsewhere.

  15. Smokeysue may I ask where you adopted Thor from? He sounds very familiar to a dog I helped out about 6 months ago. Young male boy named Thor with double rear dew claws. I bumped into his owners when I was walking my dogs and ended up getting my sister to mind Thor for almost a month at her house. He was not small dog safe and he is not a dog I would take as a rescue. Poor temperament plus idiot owner = time bomb in this dog. I hope it isnt him. He was a little lame in one of his front legs. This was Central Coast nsw but his owner moved around.
