ahh yes, Mishka has a lot of trouble with stay, thats a command she is really struggling to learn although, i havent tried it with the cicker yet, and shes doing so well with it it just might work, the puppy school i had taken to even had trouble gettin her to stay lol and not having her know i have the treats will be a challenge, she is soo treat focused at the moment, i dont have her attention unless theres treats involved, whatver she smells is so much more interesting xD its something im planning on getting the proffesional trainer to help with when they call me back lol

it was, Mishka has a tendancy to bow anyway (she stretches alot) so ive had a lot of people tell me thats its really good to keep her mind active, and someone on youtube ive really been following like to let his dog to a point figure out what he wants from him using the clicker, so i tried the same method with Mishka, first just clicking when she stretched while we where having a play, then treating, then i started bringing in that id tap on the ground, now shes doing it pretty consistently but theres no verbal cue yet. With the clicker, shes learning things so much faster :D im so proud of her <3 i took a video that im planning on putting on yourtube, i might post it in the videos section :D or in this thread bow can sometimes be a hard one to teach. My dog kept dropping her backside all the time, but when the light bulb went on, it was like...."look at me...I can bow" I've been working on "reverse circle around handler" She kept getting stuck halfway around instead of completing the circle. Then I tried back chaining it & now it's her most offered behavior. But I am not clicking her for it unless I cued it now. My dogs just love their fun with the clicker just before bed...it has become a night time ritual  I am so happy for you :) I'd heard it was a hard one to teach, and i honestly didnt plan on teaching it to Mishka, but she does it randomly and tonight during her training she did it, so i decided to take the opportunity to click, and using the method where i gave her guidance, but instead of helping her get the position right, letting her figure it out on her own, she really enjoyed it and kept focused as well as actively doing behaviours, then once she got the click for it a few times, repeating it until the gesture of me tapping the floor was put in, and i think i had just as much fun watching her go through that process! haha. ive also learnt about her to break up her training session with random plays with her favourite toy and making her do what she knows for it, keeps her attention for a lot longer, she keeps her attention longer with the clicker too! im so glad she moved on from her fear of it. ooh, the circle around the handler, mishka starting learning that at puppy school, its fun! but dont you get dizzy? lol i used to always get dizzy when coaxing her around with a treat, oh i havent tried training sessions just before bed, it actually might help them settle at night, right now they think its annoy mum time and play tug-o-war with her hair :p Do you find yours settle better at night after a goodnight session? They have a nightly ritual. They are so funny especially the young one. When he gets excited he hides, usually tucked away in his kennel. He does this at night when he knows I am getting their dinner ready. Last night he heard me playing clicker with my girl inside before dinner & when I went to find him he had hidden in a different spot. He's not scared...he just does it to self control his excitement. Anyway, usually the ritual is she comes inside & gets fed & he is fed on the verandah. When they are finished, I do some clicker training with her & meanwhile he is working out how to get the door open. Once he's worked that out & lets himself in, I tie her to the leg of the lounge & do some clicker with him. Then I let her off & we go through a heap of fun stuff with them working in unison (no clicker for this). Then it's outside for a wee, then back inside & they go straight to their beds for their cookie. If I break the ritual, like if I am too tired, they make me feel so guilty. I do several sessions with her during the day if I can, cause we are learning Canine Freestyle. ATM with the agility, I am clicking her for showing enthusiasm at the end of a run...ie I click when I raise my arms in the air & she jumps into the air in joy hoping this will stop her just running off to the scribes tent at the end of a run  With the "back around handler" you start by getting them to offer good heel position, then keep heel position with you as you pivot away from them...small steps at first & they have to keep focused on your face. Once you have the heel pivot going, you can start to shape any movement around you backwards. You need to be in a tight corner so the dog turns into you & keeps contact with your legs. Some people use a round barrier to keep them in tight, but this didn't work for me, she just kept crashing into the barrier. aww, he hides? thats so cute! Mishka just jumps around everywhere! but she stopped peeing when shes excited so thats a positive haha.I'll have to teach mine the heel position, but it'll have to be tomorrow now, Mishka had her exceptional training session, since im utterly hopeless at completely focusing on one thing, and she tends to get bored of it that way anyway, and she seems to really enjoy figuring out what it is im asking of her, so she learnt the basis of hi-5. :) so tomorrow im sure she'll enjoy learning how to stay at the heel position. do i start with standing still or should i try a little bit of walking? just to start her out? How do you get them workiing in unisen o.o Mine just jump all over each other and then distract each other

thanks, i wont be able to afford a crate until after i see a professional anyway, being a student, i have to prioritize what comes first, i refuse to go into my savings as thats for vet emergencies, and while this is important, life saving vet procedures in my mind is more important for that money, even though it may or may not happen, better to be safe than sorry lol. I will say, that thankyou for all the help, Surprisingly Mishka has excelled with Clicker training way more than i thought she would, i think my voice distracted her somehow, with the clicker she has two new tricks in the making as with the clcker its way easier to reward something that they just do randmonly. Shake is well on the way and moving away from being treat orientated, and her newest one is Bow, it doesnt have a verbal cue yet, its just me tapping the ground with two fingers :D
-
I did, it was very helpful, changed how i get them used to the clicker, and had way better responses than when i used the method i saw on youtube :D thanks, i took a look, and showed my housemates, and theyre under the impression that its cruel somehow >__> ooh, i have an ebay account, i'll check out both sites and compare prices, my only issue is i dont know what size to get for them. i dont want it to be too big that they'll use it as a bathroom, but i dont want them to cramped in either..
-
ahh yes, they have a treat ball that they love (even when its only got 1 little piece of kibble in it) xDD i'll start using that more Ace needed something different during training, i used tiny bits of cheese, and he really put in %100 it was nice, it was a realyl relaxing session.
-
they are challenging at times, but i just love the terriers, its the only dogs ive ever owned haha, theyre so entertaining and full of life :D and these two are kind of nice, my first jackie was very dog aggressive, to the point he'd do serious damage. so i had to constantly be on watch for other dogs, and could never let him around them, as well as wearing a muzzle whenever he was out of the house, so these two i have now are awesome, i only have to worry about other peoples dogs now haha. i do radomly get the dogs to do things, mostly sit though. Thanks i'll look into that book, see if i can find it in the bookstore :D

Scottsmum- ahh, Mishka cant have raw meat, she gets really sick from it, and Ace does get raw bones :) i just dont know how to set different rules if its like i dont exist xDD persephone- ill definitely look into it :) i dont want the crate to be a traumatizing experience, at all. thanks :) thatsa really good idea, i never thought of it, making like a run in the backyard.

He is impossible not to spoil and he knows it. theyre SO GOOD at wrapping around their little paws! he looks like a bundle of energetic fun at time! but also cuddly. by the way, love that white strip down his face, it looks like a perfect line

It's one of the simplest forms of learning necessary for survival so I'm pretty sure Mishka is getting it. A couple of things: 1. the only way to know if Mishka is getting it is if you see more of the behaviours you click (e.g she tries something again); 2. sometimes dogs don't appear interested in treats because they are highly distracted, or too anxious to eat. Ahh, maybe she doesnt have that much interest in the treat then? maybe shes bored of it? she only gets treats from her dog food Science diet i think its called, and i cant really tempt her with the more enticing things like little pieces of meat or anything because shes very sensitive and theres a lot of foods that actually make her quite sick. the video i watched said that if your dog gets it, they'll hear the click then look for the treat. But is, I was sitting thinking over what to do with her and i had my hand out and she put her paw there, so i thought shake would be neat to teach her and clicked as her paw went there and treated, and then she would put her paw there again and so forth.. before she did it on command, Im going to guess thats the sign she gets it? a little more subtle than Ace was.

very naughty, and then when you put them both together, they destroy thing oh that much faster. definitely getting a crate, the mattress is chewed right through to the springs. Dont worry i certainly dont think your being rude, i'm happy to take any suggestion even if its that im doing something wrong, i wont learn from mistakes if no one tells me im making one right? ohh, sales always happen then end right on the day before i get paid haha but yes, i'll definitely do that, and give them a little more time out in the lounge with everyone, starting on the lead. they have absoloutely no manner in the lounge xD and i think its about time they learnt some anyway. Baby gates are heaven, their kept in the bedroom with me overnight and the gate really comes in handy, Mishka can jump it, but shes learnt to respect it, so someone had mentioned a play pen, that could work, if she learnt to respect the gate, im sure she'd learn the same goes for the pen. I wish it where like that with the cat, that once or twice is claws out and can sometimes escalate, funny thing is Ace just thinks its a game. but ill start giving him time outs for that behavior. we made the newbie mistake when he was a puppy of thinking his game with the cat was cute, it wasnt until recently that she become fed up with it. i agree, the 'scold noise' has helped out A lot, they both know what it is and stop.. although Ace will gnerally try to go back to it after. Mishka fetches, and plays tug. Ace chases the ball and gets it, then runs away with the ball. hes become a little obsessive with the ball, once he sees it, he'll spend literally the rest of the day looking for it and wont concentrate on anything else. This might sound silly but what are RMB's? ive never heard of that before xD Ohhh, when i go to the pet shop ill pick some of that up, thankyou :) Oh no, dont worry about it, your suggestions are all very good and ill put them into action :)

I'll start taking them out out twice a day, because we stay out there with them for a few hours if the weather lets us, they cant be out there unsupervised, the fence was fine for my last Jackie, but he was old, And little young Mishka has decided that she would figure out how to get into next door's yard, and the yard behind us, both of which own rather large dogs, one of which gets up on the fence barking and growling whenever i have them out there playing. when we got them we very well thought the yard was fine, but apparently not, and the neighbours landlord doesnt want to pay to get it fixed. I just finished a training session with each dog, Ace appears to know that when i click, a treat is coming. Mishka is still utterly clueless lol And i tried a different treat to normal tonight and I had Aces almost full attention for a change. And Mishka learnt shake by a happy accident accident XDD

Yes :) we have a rather big backyard and i take them out for some fetch, a run, and just to have a little sniff as well as working on their recall and getting them to follow me then randomnly changing where i walk, they love it! Ace loves the kind of activity that really makes him think. He also really seems to enjoy, i set up jumps in the backyard with bricks and whatevers laying around, and he loves going through it, its really fun to watch :D
-
Not as much as i'd like, i did post for suggestions on some indoor activity suggestions, Like ive said before, health issues have been an issue for me. They are generally ok overnight, Ace very rarely, in fact only once, peed on the bed overnght, it all happens when they've been put in the room to give the cat some down time. theres a toddler gate on my bedroom door leftover from when we had two dogs (my housemates dog before he passed) here very aggressive towards each other, well my housemates dog was aggressive towards Mishka. My dog. and they go in the room sometimes, thats where all the problems start, some people think they have seperation anxiety around me, My housemates have said when i go out, they cry until i come home again.

Thankyou everyone for your responses, its appreciated :) i have to look into getting a crate. well two, a few people have mentioned crate training now for several different issues, so next week i'll head down to the pet store and price them. as far as distracting him from the bad behavior with a toy, it did make him do more, but i didnt give him my scolding noise which what for for my is a firm 'aye' kind of noise, i dont know how to write it out realy xD i think it could be also kind of a lack of exercise at the moment as im recovering from health issues, but i am hoping to very soon get back into their daily walks. im trying to train them every day, but ike ive said earlier, Ace seems very dis-interested in his sessions lately. right now im going to try and focus on getting them set up for clicker training, they arent understanding it. ive been told 'click, give treat' until they associate the click with a treat, but they arent getting it lol I do disinfect the mattress then flip it, but i think somehow the smell lingers, i think i need to look up stuff that removes the odor, both from the bed, and floorboards. I'll try the suggestion of my scolding noise, then redirecting his attention onto something positive. i like that approach, i want to try and really limit the punishments they get where possible. Having them out in the lounge isnt always possible, i live with someone elderly and he sometimes trips her up, and he likes to 'bully' the cat xDD hes just trying to play, but she really isnt interested, so he tries to push it as much as he can and i dont want her scratching his eyes.

ok, so my other thread in here isnt active anymore and im kind of after some quick answers, also its a completely different issue. kinda. Ace is being /very/ destructive Today he completely chewed up my sheet.. while it was on my bed, its fitted so the edges where still snuggly tucked while the center was pretty much nonexistent. and on top of that he chewed a hole in the mattress as well. Mind you that mattress has already been flipped due to a hole in the other side. And his nasty habit of peeing on my bed, chewing through wood, including my desk (which we need to stop because we arent sure what type of pain was used and we dont want him getting sick.) i am getting a professional trainer in next week (if they are available) but i will be making the call next week after my money goes in, but until then, i do need to start trying to eliminate the particular behaviors mentioned. ive tried ignoring it, but thats not helping, in fact he does it more. I've also tried withholding affection when hes doing behaviors that are unwanted, but again, hes doing it more. i did look at the training out unwanted behaviors but didnt see anything. and there are alot of pages. So basically ive had some people tell me that when i catch him (almost always) to put him in 'time-out' another room with no bed and no toys or any form of amusement. for 5-15 minutes. has anyone tried with method? is it even effective or am i being told to do something completely pointless? One of my housemates want me to start smacking them, and i really dont want to resort to that, i was raised with people smacking their dogs, but i have been told that its not an ideal system, so i dont want to do it. But i do need something that will work. pretty much, im getting desperate, mattresses arent cheap, i have a bad back so need a fairly good one and dont have the kinda money just laying around to keep replacing my stuff. and with him tearing stuff up, what if he eats some of it and gets sick.
-
thanks :) i think i need to change it up, Ace seems to have become so incredibly bored with training >__> i might have to try different treats, or try a different room, the lounge room seems to have too many temptations for him (the rug) and maybe have housemates walking around and the TV on is just a little too much for him. and the treats i use is simply the food they get at feeding time, so maybe hes a little bored of that too.
-
Thanks ill take a look, ive been watching videos from TrainingPositive.. not sure if anyone on here would recommend that, but it seems alright, i like the completely positive approach and wouldnt mind giving it a try, ive heard that its better to ignore unwanted behaviours other than punish for it
-
ive actually been considering a treadmill, but i need to save up some $$ first haha, being a student, living independently doesnt help much and i cant really find a good priced on at the moment, and with them destroying things i own i find im needing to replace things more than id like, im thinking they coud be bored? which is why i thought of exercise, but i might try more training exercises for them to keep their minds active, and ill definitely try whispering, who knows, maybe with me talking quieter it might actually encourage them to pay better attention to me if theyve got to concentrate harder on what i want. so do you think the games of fetch and stuff im doing is enough in the meantime? i dont want them to get unwell from lack of exercise but right now sadly it is a little hard for me to take them out, but at the same time, i want to keep them while doing what i can for them.
-
its so basic, but can you believe i never thought of cutting their food back, maybe then they'll pay more attention during training haha. but being fed less, does that mean they'll be hungry all the time? i would love to train in a whisper, but they already ignore me a fair bit, lol. ive been working on the recall lately, using a method from a video i watched of tossing a treat across the room, then when they turn to return to me, saying come, and i think ace is getting some exercise considering that all he'll do now is run back and forth expecting a treat xD But waht youve suggested ill look around youtube for examples on how to teach it :)
-
i think this post goes here, considering exercise is a part of a dogs health? basically where i am we've had some bad weather, wet or cold with a few nice days thrown in, i love to hate melbourne sometimes. but being extremely vulnerable to pneumonia i cant go out in the rain, and recovering from health issues, on the nice days i cant walk that far yet, but with that being said i have a purebred and a mixed Jack russell that need a lot of exercise.. The Mixed is becoming noticeably overweight >__> are there any fun games others play with the dogs inside to atleast keep them active? on the nice days i take them outside with a ball and practice some recall training. but then, if the grounds wet my mix wont move so im just after some indoor exercise ideas. Currently we play some fetch, i throw the ball up the 3 stairs we have, and tug-o-war. and chasy (when i want to go up to the bathroom or something and they want to come, so i try to outrun them.. never works.) < although i think i have to drop that.
-
i have another quick question, Training the dogs, during a session, should i focus on teaching them to master one command, or work on a variety of commands?
-
they've both been to puppy school, different ones, Ace was puppy pre-school, and mishka did individual lessons at Kintala if thats how you spell it, the ony thing in, Ace went really well in a group environment, he seems to really enjoy training and learning, but Mishka is the opposite in a group setting, shes a very excited dog naturally and gets excited over the smallest thing to the point where shes jumping and dashing around, and i worry about that taking her to a group environment, i am currently looking in getting a trainer to come to my house to get them both started before attempting a group environment, but i a interested in obedience classes, but i really wouldnt know which ones around here are good.

It's not good that he's constantly doing it. It's good that he is offering you a behaviour and trying to earn a reward. Simply start rewarding some other behaviours and only reward the roll over if you have asked for the behaviour. If I gave you a chocolate every time you slammed the door I reckon I could guess what you would start doing. Provided you like chocolate of course! Quickly brought him out for a quick training session, and being a fast learner he started figuring out that rollover didnt get him what he wanted (although hed throw it in there a few times just to make sure haha) but i also really worked on teaching a new hand cue for down, i think having the same cue was confusing him, and i didnt mean to do it, it just kinda happened, and within 5-10 minutes, he learnt the different cues and will lay down now instad of rolling over. im so proud of my little boy.. Although, lately his attention has drifted, he seems much more interested in sniffing the rug than actually focusing properly, which was strange because for once i had mishka's undivided attention. it happens sometimes but shes usually quite easily distracted.
