Using Texta As Sun Protection
katiegrrl88 replied to katiegrrl88's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks guys! Aussielover, I didn't even think about the lack of uv block in the texta - it's so obvious though! I wonder why the vet recommended it then? And persephone, don't worry, we won't be putting anything on her til she's healed. I'll look for a fast absorbing pet sunscreen. If anyone knows of a good product, I'd appreciate the advice! :) -
Using Texta As Sun Protection

Hi all, thanks for replying!! It's not on the wet nose itself. It's on the muzzle above the nose where the border collie gets a patch of white fur. My girl has had some nasty folliculitis going on (it's still not better, but healing) , the skin is going to be tender and prone to burning and the vet has said I'll have to colour in the skin with a texta for sun protection. I think it sounds weird myself and would prefer to use sunscreen. -
Hi, just wondering if anyone out there has used texta (obviously non-toxic) on their dog instead of sunscreen? If so, what did you think of it? I've been advised to do so by my vet and am trying to adjust to the idea. Thanks!!

Border Collie Pup - Red Patch On Snout
katiegrrl88 replied to katiegrrl88's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi Dame Danny's Darling, thanks so much for the supportive words! :D we love having our two girls - couldn't imagine having left one behind!! I agree about the vets, I was so upset when I heard the first vet's prescriptions were making Asher worse rather than better. She's going back to the good vet tonight for a check up, but looks like she's doing well! DeltaCharlie: you're absolutely right, it was splitting the skin, it was terrible! (BTW your BCs are just gorgeous!!!) -

All I know is with almost a week of the neocort cream Asher's nose was only getting worse. A day or two after going on antibiotics she started looking better. Probably for an internal infection a topical cream was going to have no effect, but also some dogs can apparently be allergic to neocort. -

Hi persephone, sheena and aliwake My lovely girl is on cephalexin tablets - antibiotics, two a day. To try and dry out the infection internally. I have sensitive skin myself and remember being told that cortisone creams can cause problems. It was a bit complicated but apparently neocort can damage the skin and suppress the immune system and maybe something else, basically do more damage than good in this case... -

Thanks sheena, i'll look into it. Btw the vet visit was finally conclusive! I didn't hear the correct term but it's a deep follicle bacterial infection The vet (a new one) said it may take over three weeks to clear up! Dog lovers: do NOT use betadine or neocort (both the things prescribed by the first vet) on a dog with a skin infection. They are the devil!!! -

Hi persephone, sheena, steph m and kirty, thanks for posting! It's not really getting worse, but I can't say that it's getting better. Luckily our other pup looks as healthy as can be. It's a pink swelled up mound with most of the fur lost from it. The vet was vague as to what it could be and prescribed Neocort and Betadine. I agree that no diagnosis is a bit useless at this point and will take her to a different vet for a second opinion tonight if I can get in. Sheena, re the Virbac and Filtabac, can you get them from a petshop or are they vet only? -

Thanks everyone for your help, esp Steph M and persephone for the ringworm ides - it linked me to demidectic mange (or some technical term like that) - the patch got a lot worse over Easter so I took my girl to the vet last night. Don't know exactly what it is (skin scraping would be too painful) but have some new cream which will hopefully work wonders! Thanks again! :) -

Much thanks to you both for replying! It's not raw or bloody or dirty, and not on her actual nose (so I don't think it's the lupus thing), it's on the fur immediately above it. (The muzzle or snout?) Can you explain why it's bad to raise two pups together? They're sisters and seem to be good at keeping each other company. Thanks again! -
Hi, I am a new mumma to two puppies, one of which is developing a red patch on the area above her nose where there is only a little amount of white fur. It doesn't look right at all, the areas appears to be swelling and occasionally there are tiny bumps on the skin (although they may be bite marks from play fighting). She never had this redness when we first met her (at 6 weeks) and it is getting larger even though I put sunscreen on it. The vet didn't think it was serious a couple of weeks ago though she is coming to look at it again soon. But this anxious mum wants to know if any of you have any advice? It would be much appreciated!! Thanks!
