Thank you Vizslamomma I did send an email this morning the the DDB Club of Australia also, for some clarification of this problem. I havent heard back from them yet If nothing else, this has been a wondering learning experience, if not a particularly wonderful introduction to the breed, I do now have a much clearer idea in my head of things to look for and questions to ask!!

That was an interesting read thank you.... I think I have a once bitten twice shy (pun intended) thing going on now, where I want my pup to have the correct bite now so I can be relatively reassured that he will adhere to the breed standard going into adulthood???

Thank you persephone We lost our Male Boxer 5 years ago, the decision to get another dog has not been taken lightly or without as much research as a newby to the breed can do. I am BEYOND upset about this, as I had already opened my heart to this wonderful boy even before meeting him But I think in my heart of hearts, I would be a fool to continue on buying this pup as a show prospect with such a fault. Many thanks to everyone, and fingers crossed for an easy withdrawal of sale and quick return of my money

And just to add, to risk further speculation, I have researched this breed and breeders quite a bit. It wasnt a decision made last week upon being given a photo of a cute puppy. I have done much research on desexing ages, reading studies, some stuff here, and was determined NOT to desex this dog prior to 18 months only. (In fact some breeders prefer not to desex at all unless there are behavioural issues, but thats a whole other topic) I am not familar, nor can find any decent information online about the skeletal growth of the breed and the true likihood this is going to correct. In my mind I think I have to let the pup go and get a full refund Thank you all for your help

Sorry to clarify, this pup is MAINS registered I do NOT intend to breed with him, I asked that he be mains registered so I could show him up until 2 years when I plan on desexing him I have signed a lengthy contract, earlier last week, the breeder told me Friday about the jaw I have no interest in naming the breeder, or running down the breeder at all My question was to people experienced with THIS BREED if the jaw is in fact likely to correct itself. I had hoped to show the pup almost immediately I have contacted the Dogue club of NSW and also sent out an enquiry to a friend who shows/breeders another breed, to ask her Judge friend out this also I am simply trying to establish whether I should continue on with the purchase or back out at this time since disclosure of this problem came about so late (better late than never I guess)

Can anyone experienced with this breed let me know if a pup with an overshot jaw, is likely to correct itself? Should the pup before purchase already display the correct undershot jaw? Would a pup destined for the show ring at an early age be disqualified for this?

From the quick bit of reading excessive iodine consumption can lead to dry and flaky skin. Iodine is found in good quantities in salt water fish (moreso than fresh water) The recommended daily requirement for dogs is "Dogs should receive 0.7 mg of iodine daily for every pound of dog food they eat (on a dry matter basis)." 5 grams of seaweed meal delivers a whooping 4.24mg of iodine, so given that we perhaps feed our dogs 1 kilo (2 pounds roughly) of food per day their requirement would be 1.4mg per day...at just 5 grams of seaweed meal you are giving the dog 3 x its daily requirement just from seaweed alone without factoring in the other parts of his diet which also may contain iodine (Assuming my maths and googling have served me correctly :laugh: ) Need to get my head around this dog nutrition stuff...very interesting I think a top up once or twice a week probably isnt a bad thing, but I would worry feeding it in daily

While I must say my "thing" is horse nutrition rather than dog nutrition, fading in coats of horses can be due to several things Excess iron in the diet, which blocks copper Low levels of copper and zinc in the diet Overall imbalances to the diet Again with horses, EXTREME care needs to be taken when supplementing with things like seaweed meal, just 5 grams of seaweed meal can exceed the requirements of a 500kg horse, so Id have to wonder, translated back to a 50kg dog, if this is safe

Yes they are treated pine, so another tick for putting the mesh inside Also my OH said the fencing isnt 7 foot (he reckons because Im so short I have a warped perception of height ) they are 6 foot After this thread and some thinking we could always make another run somewhere on the property, our feeling was that it was just a lovely space and a shame to waste it Back to the drawing board

Oh a shade sail is a great idea, actually we've just enclosed our back deck with shade cloth and have quite a few metres left over, so that could work Piggy was a big boy, but moreso my OH like to build things BIG AND STRONG (read over the top :laugh: ) so the pen was a little overkill even for an almost 400kg pig! Excellent ideas, Im jotting them down to make a To Do list :) :)

Also doing a mesh roof probably wouldnt be an issue either...if we landed ourselves with an escapee!

We are getting a Bullmastiff Hopefully not climbers We will have him inside of a night, its purely when we are at work The tree that was there, was also nuked by George the pig, so we are planting a new one in there shortly, deciduous so it allows lots of sun in during winter We could certainly remove some of the slats, that wouldnt be a problem, and also probably configure the mesh inside (the posts are inside which is why the mesh was going on the outside (but Im sure my clever OH could overcome that problem :laugh: ) The sea shells were going to be one for water (for a good lay down on a hot summers day) and the other for sand Dont think Id have water in there until pup was older though Thank you for all your suggestions (lots of things I hadnt thought of!)

Hmmm see in my head my new pup is going to be absolutely perfect and do no such thing as climb or chew Im wondering if my snake mesh will prevent some of that? Hmm........might be back to the drawing board

Airedale, yes visibility is quite good... Perhaps a little limited when the pup is small, but at maturity there should be no visibility issues This is the only photo I have of it at the moment (complete with George Piggy), it has now been grassed, repainted... Do you think the sides pose an issue?

Again, warning, newby posting We are currently puppy shopping (have narrowed down breed, and I think breeder, so awaiting arrival of pups) In the mean time we are putting the finishing touches onto what will now be our dog run This area previously housed our pet pig (who we sadly lost on Boxing Day this year ) It is roughly 10m x 10m with 7 foot timber fences. Inside it contains a large kennel, with a verandah out the front We have planted grass back in the yard (since George pretty much nuked the place) and are going to better insulate the kennel area (it is already raised off the ground and packed underneath with straw), carpet the floor with fake turf, and also carpet the verandah. Inside the kennel we are going to put a variety of bedding depending on the season The pen gets lots of shade and sun throughout the day. We are also going to mesh the outside of the run to try and prevent snakes from entering, and pups from digging out We are thinking of also putting in a sea shell type swimming pool (large breed, that can be a bit "iffy" in hot weather) Are we missing anything? What constitutes the perfect run? Thank you

Rebanne I am finding this a lot too, and agree with the thinking they both cost the same to raise/produce Seems some variation amongst the breeders, as to their desexing and pricing policies :)

I spoke at length again with the breeder I am 99% sure Im going to end up buying a puppy from She also likes to desex later for pet homes, but registers on the Ltd register to cover against breeding (I think) To me this sounds like a fabulous idea...best of both worlds I guess? Ive heard of others repaying $XXX when the new owners desex the animal after the appropriate age...so they basically pay show dog price for a dog on the ltd register, and after the animal is desexed at 18-24 months, the breeder refunds the difference between a show dog and a pet dog?? So there are ways around it, that work for both parties Im sure you still get questionable individuals that do the wrong thing, and ruin it for those of up (breeders and buyers) trying to do the right thing by the dog
