Considering how badly milo just behaved at the pet store... I know I'm going to look like an idiot handler... but I'll still be at the vic workshops.. so no one else has to have that worry.. I will be worse than you...
-
I'm going to the Steve courtney workshops in melb later this year, but atm, all my money goes into the racing season...
-
I do my "training" in a combination of places, lounge, backyard, frontyard, local park, while walking.... something you can work on, is doggy pushups? stuff like that. you can do that anywhere. I like this guys videos. they are more for the general pet owner, but stuff there will help you with basics that will come into formal obedience

I am so jealous of all your dogs with such strong focus!!! That was Awesome Mal1! I went out this morning and did just some focus/heel positioning work...

Omg I Entered An Obedience Trial!
paddles replied to Rilla-My-Rilla's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I hope you will share your video of your failed trial... I have been in similar circumstances, and since I'm always able to laugh at myself... well.... you did well with the rally o... (I just hung my head and ran away after my trial...) Next trial will be easier, and the next even easier... hopefully... -
I love that focus! I really must do more focus work. I do some, and we do blockwork etc. but really... (as is no doubt apparent)not enough! I love that.
-
I do that at the start of every training session to get his "focus" going... but maybe you are right and I need to bring it in whenever he is distracted...
-
Oooooo I went out this morning, and tried going sidewards (we have practiced backwards along the wall before...) so here is the scenario... (don't laugh too hard) I have him in heel.. I'm asking him to look at me (we've done a couple of focus exercises, but.. well we've discussed milo's focus issues before) I step sidewards... he looks at me... stands up... goes and attempts to wander off.. whoops.. leash... hmmm... oh, ok.. conversation then goes like this.. Milo *staring off into the distance* "I'm sure there has been a cat there" Heidi *looking at milo* "milo, working" Milo *continuing to stare off into the distance* "huh? we are?" Heidi " milo.. I have treats... I have bite rag... " Milo... *finally looking at me* "you do?" Milo... Hmmm.. I'll take a step towards you.... and continue past you... "I'm sure there is a cat over there" Heidi "milo, heel" at this point milo reluctantly moves around me into heel... *reward* step sidewards 1/2 step again... REPEAT!

That was so good Rubystar! you can be proud of that!

we often play every now and then, I didn't for this, deliberately. (you don't need to see me look like a loon... well more so than I already do...) hmmm, you are right, I was dawdling again... we were in this instance, trying for "trial length" of work...

 I'm pretty sure your dog went out right behind us day 1 of undera :) My point exactly.... same at obedience trials, you need to beat it into my head.. I live in my own little world, they like me in there https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBKnv2Q0nfY&feature=c4-overview&list=UUW7cAY7ba4L7jayIcgovXpw -

I'll be there, but to be brutally honest, you would have to grab me, shake me, and say, I'm from dogz online... before I paid attention, I'm usually in my own little world at races... -

Martingale Collar - Do You Use It All The Time?
paddles replied to Loreley's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
we use limited slip collars, which remain on all the time, flash is currently in a martingale collar, purely cause I had it to hand when his last collar got eaten. a properly fitted limited slip is my fave. -
looking really good, love that focus...

Dog Marking Since Bringing The New Baby Home
paddles replied to chuckandsteve's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
how is it bad? my husband caught my dog, and rubbed his nose in it (and I'm totally against that) BUT he stopped peeing inside after it. if it worked, it's not bad. -

Omg! I've Gone And Entered An Obedience Trial
paddles replied to paddles's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Time has passed.. are we working any better? I don't know, but I have made the decision to enter another trial, there is going to be a double trial at knox in September, I shall aim for this... I'm sure there will be many laughs, crying jags, and despair while we try to get ready for this trial... please sit back and prepare to laugh, cry, and crack up hysterically as I try to do this.... there will be videos... -
Dog Marking Since Bringing The New Baby Home
paddles replied to chuckandsteve's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
This is what I was told when I had a recent issue similar, a "stressful situation bought on marking inside" Always check for a medical reason before assuming a behavioral one, says the nurse dog musher. Until you get him checked for a UTI, you haven't done the first step. Until you know the answer on that, create a new routine for him... after he's gone out to pee, bring him back in the house and put him in his crate WITH a really good, long lasting treat (ie. beef bone or something equally enticing). Leave him in there, as a reward, for about 15 minutes after you are done pottying your other dogs; then take him out on a leash and take him back outside to pee again.... If there's any hormonal cause, he'll get to pee on top of Milo's scent, which will make him very happy. 1.) Check out the medical, 2.) Control his opportunities, and 3.) Form a new behavior..... Form what you want, modify what you don't want... and make it a "reward" in his mind so that he thinks he's the king's meow for the new behavior.. but, check out the medical!! (Did I say that enough.....??) I followed it, fairly closely, and had him back in sync? within a week. -
