I have been thinking of this for a little while and think it is probably a silly question but I would like to know the answer to it if anyone out there knows. Do dogs of the same breed recognise each other as being of the same breed? Or are they just all dogs ?

My OH , our dog Abby and I are going to Bright in Victoria from the Illawarra at the end of May for a holiday. Is there anything we need to be aware of such as ticks or different dog laws/rules for Victoria?

Hi can anyone tell me what time the dog show/judging begins on the Thursday of the show? I have looked at the schedule and it has a long list of different breeds being shown then. I just wondered what time these start?

Thanks for that have you tried the naught dog people at unanderra or the dog project people at fairy meadow? I don't think my husband will agree to driving out to kurrajong.

Hi I am looking for someone who can help me with training Abby our miniature schnauzer. She is 1 year old and came to live with us when she as 8 months old. She has been to dog obedience classes can sit, drop, stay comes when she is recalled but I continue to have problems with our leash walking and her reaction to other dogs. I have done a little research for a behaviourist in this region. There don't seem to be many that I can find. I am happy To pay for a personal consultations and know they are not cheap that's why I would prefer to get someone who is recommended by others. Can anyone help?

Yes she was in the harness when it happened. I will look around the illawarra for a behaviourist.we are just back from a leash free beach and she was fine, engaging playfully with other dogs. But I figure that was because she had the freedom of not being on the leash.

We have finally gotten Abby our 1 year old mini schnauzer to walk beautifully on the leash. However that all changes instantly when she sees another dog. The dog can be quite a way distant but as soon as she sees he/she she begins yo whimper, bark and pull to get close. All this is fine if the other dog owner allows us to meet, sniff and walk on. She is happy thorn and it only takes 30 seconds and off we go again. Most dog owners are happy to do this, we always ask first. But yesterday we had finished the first part of our walk and were sitting having a coffee when a dog and it's owner walked past. Abby barked madly, whimpered, screamed and generally acted like and aggressive, crazy dog. ThaTs the worst she has ever been. Does anyone have any ideas what we can do to stop this. Once she could no longer see the dog she was fine.

Tinned tuna in spring water worked really well with our dog when we got her, she wasn't overly interested in food. How she has settled in she eats just about anything but still loves the tuna and also minced kangaroo. Good luck.

I am hoping to be able to do the same, thought giving her some pleasure in walking will help her realise it can fe pleasurable and that she does not have to pull. Eventually I will go back to our original collar.

Thanks Sheena, we are beginning to have quite a bit if success, she loves the clicker training and I try to spend short period with her at home each day perfecting things. At the moment it is shake hands. I hope you are having a relaxing Sunday. We have had storms in the illawarra the last few days, yesterday the most amazing hail storm, more storms expected this afternoon. We are lucky Abby doesn't seem to worry about storms, the only noise that worries her is if I have the washing machine on in the laundry and I put her food down close by. She won't eat until the machine stops or I move her good into another room. They are such funny creatures. Enjoy your Sunday. :D

Hi everyone who has been so kind to help. We have had success with our loose leash walking, I bought a Petlife Halti Harness and it has made such a difference. Abby walks without pulling, looks up at whoever has her lead while we walk as if to say "aren't I just such a good girl" I never thought changing her lead would make such a difference. Thank you all.m :)

Thanks sheena I would be really interested.

This is slowly working Terri thanks. I have found she loves frankfurts I cut them up really small and she will do most things for them. Wish I had found them earlier.

You have given me hope Chris the rebel.

We use a check chain she pants and huffs and huffs and puffs on the walks. If I put it up high enough on her neck I find it works much better.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions we will continue on with our training and hopefully eventually get there. After our last obedience training tonight I am considering going to one of the Saturday dog obedience/agility/training groups would this work with Abby? My reading of these types of groups makes me think they may only be for dogs like GSD or collie type dogs. Is this my misconception?

Hi we have had Abby for almost 3 months now and she is 11 months old. We walk her every day and I am still not having much success with loose leash walking. We are getting the occasional moments on our walk when the leash is loose and then I go crazy with praise but for the most part she is still pulling on the leash. I have done lots of research, have tried lots of different ways, praising when it is loose, saying no when she pulls, rewarding with very special delicious treats when it is loose , making her stop and sit quietly until she calms, starting again with a "heel" holding the leash close to me. I am at a loss. I am sure it must be ME but I don't know what else to do! We finish our 4 nights of obedience training tomorrow night. At training she walks well, can pull at times but not like she does when we are out and about. She sits, waits when I say wait before we walk down stairs, does not run ahead of me. We are getting the 'stays' and 'drops' under control. She comes when she is off leash and I call her. It's just the walks. I so want to make our walks more pleasant. What do the more experienced dog owners think? Should I get someone to just do some one on one leash training with us? I am prepared to do that if it helps. She has a collar the is webbing with chain that if up high on her neck gives me more control, but for most of the walk she pants and makes throaty noises. She is a mini schnauzer and can be stubborn but I am determined to work this out for both our sakes. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My first dog was a short haired German Shepard called Prince, I was about 8 or 9 and my dad bought it for the family as he was working down on the Snowy Mountain Scheme I will never forget her. Later as an adult I got a long haired Shepard called Reba. Now I have Abby a miniature schnauzer who is the love of my life, who fits into our lifestyle and home perfectly.

It sounds like we have a very previous mini schnauzer in Abby. We struggle to get her outside to do her business on a rainy day. Does anyone have any ideas? We have to close all the doors and watch her like a hawk when it rains, like it is today. Another weird thing she has is she won't eat in front of us we have to put her food down and walk out of the laundry before she eats. She is not food driven and can leave her food for 30 minutes or more before she goes in to take it. A not so strange thing is she has just started to nip at my OH's heels. Not at mine but I think she sees me as the boss and my OH as her playmate that's not to say I don't play with her I do. Any suggestions?

Yes always take Abby to a local coffee shops after our walk. She just sits at our feet and looks around, there might be the occasional growl if she sees someone she objects to, last week it was a very old and slow old lady, I don't know why she took exception to her but she did just growl quietly.f she does that I normally get her to look at me and say 'quiet' that's enough to settle her.
-
Well it makes men realise that Abby isn't so weird after all, she found where the cat pooped down the side of the garden and we wondered why she was spending so much time there only yo see her come in with some in her mouth. Yuk!

A silly message but thought it might bring some interesting comments. Abby our 11 month old Miniature Schnauzer has settled into our household after just over 2 months. She is the love of our lives. Tonight she demolished our left over goulash, mashed potato veggies and some kibble. I didn't give her too much what I gave her she loved. After her meal she now knows she has to come to me so I can wash her moustache. She is an absolute delight I can't imagine our lives without her.

Thanks hank dog we are seeing a slow improvement everyday, she even looks at the person who has the lead now (sometimes) to get instructions. We have been giving heaps of praise and treats and slow and steady seems to be working.
