My boy loves his Cuz balls, it's really quite hysterical when he is at it full force it sounds like he is killing a baby rabbit ! The squeakers don't last long and neither do the feet, but he loves 'em

Benny Update And Photos Of The Others As Well
leec replied to Brandiandwe's topic in General Dog Discussion
Gosh, what gorgeous dogs you have. I love the old fella Benny, he's a lucky boy to have you looking after him. They all look lovely and very happy. -
Thanks everyone, and yes OSoSwift, that is my motto at the moment. I have everything crossed that the white boy will not be able to escape from this "compound". I worry so much about the two of them spending most days in their kennel, they are so young and love to run and play, and they need to be able to burn off their energy. I have everything crossed that Chadley won't be able to jump/climb out, and I can leave them in their enrichment garden and go to work and not have to worry, God, that will be a nice change.

Well we had a phone call from the fencer last night, we have a problem with bending the posts. Never mind Hubby came up with some more options. Waiting to hear from the fencer today to see what we can do. On the up side though, we got the 'tunnel' on Saturday and have got it into place and covered with dirt. Now just for some landscaping to make it look nice. Puppies are in for a treat. I will definitely post some photos when it is finished, I think it's going to take a few weeks in total though

My oldest was my dear Eddie, SBT, 14.5 years young. He was such a laid back dog and just loved to be with his humans. He loved to swim and chase balls too. When he was about 8 we moved to our 20 acre property and he had the time of his life. We called the dam the dogs own private aqua therapy pool :) He swam pretty much all year long, never mind how cold it was! He taught our female staffy to swim, as she hated it, but couldn't let Eddie have the ball all the time. He went grey around the face when he was about 8 years, and started losing hearing and eyesight probably when he was about 12. He also had injured his back sometime as well and had arthritis. He was an inside dog when we were home and had a purpose built kennel for outside use whenever he wanted. But his favourite place was the car, if the gates were open and a car door was open, he'd be gone and I'd find him in the back seat asleep. He was fed VIP dog roll and Supercoat dry, table scraps, eggs, sardines and the occasional bit of pizza. Had his vaccinations when required. Hardly never was sick. We knew the time was coming, he had developed dementia and was getting slower and having more trouble moving around. I woke up one morning to find he could barely stand and knew it was time. Over 12 months later I sit here crying, I loved that dog. My girl that lived with Ed all this time made it to 10 years. She eventually succumbed to mast cell tumours. Maggie was my heart dog and she is with me every day. I could rave on about her for hours and still talk about her to anyone that will listen. Too many tears now, so will end with a pic

Thanks for that. My fencer has been and can bend the posts for me at 30-40 degrees, yippee. Now just waiting for the quote. Fence will be about 6.5feet high in total. Thanks everyone for the input and advice.

Okey dokey, finally have got hubby to compromise on fencing :) He has agreed to 7 foot timber posts, graduated fencing wire (same as what we have) and wire over the top, yay. So, my question is, I have managed to find heavy duty brackets that are 600mm for the wire on the top, but they have a 90 degrees bend. Will this be ok, or does the wire have to be on a 30 - 45 degree bend?

That little staffy cross sounds just like my staffy x - the one I am trying to keep in. Hubby is hard to convince tho. He wants to go with the rollers. So we'll just have to wait and see if he can get over them. He doesn't jump, he climbs. If all else fails tho, I will be pushing your solution, I think it's great
-
Thanks for the link, your kennels look fabulous. I was chatting to hubby last night regarding the escapologists escapades. I think at the moment we had thought to go with the rollers, but now, I'm liking what I see on your web page. Thanks for the idea, will show OH and see. Fencer is coming Monday so will have to make a decision soon.

Geez guys, I was all excited and now I'm a bit flat ...... Maybe I will go back to hot tape and the rollers on top, something has to stop him. I don't think he is a dedicated jumper/climber, more opportunistic. So if I can limit his opportunities I'm hoping he'll limit his escapes :D

Might I tactfully suggest 6ft 6 inches or higher? Piroska V ( for girl Vizsla) could scale 11 feet fences. In her younger day, she climbed everything. And could get down afterwards. I hear what you are saying, but I have to take into account the height the fencing comes in, 6 foot is standard and the hubby isn't keen. I have suggested it but he doesn't want it to look like a compound! I think the hot tape might be the go and considering I already have everything I need for this, it will be Option No. 1. God forbid if I need an option no. 2

Thank you, I just want them to be happy, mentally and physically. Yep I understand every time he gets out he is rewarded. He is funny, he has been with us since January and has only jumped out a handful of occasions and usually to follow me or my hubby. Unfortunately on Sunday he jumped/climbed out to chase the roos, fortunately they were faster than him and double fortunately he actually just stayed in the front paddock sniffing around. I have some ideas though, see above. And thanks.

Buy a cheap electric fence & run a hot wire around the top...they will only touch it once. If they are diggers as well, then you can run a wire around the bottom of the fence. Wow, didn't even think of that and as I have a horse I have heaps of hot wire :) I have seen on FB the PVC piping that you put on wire above gates etc - the idea is that it spins and the dog can't get a purchase on it??? I like the hot tape idea better though, I already have 2 battery run units and only use one at a time, so I don't need to buy a thing. Thanks heaps, I am getting very excited now.

It has been great reading this thread, good luck with your design. I am in the process of building an 'enrichment garden' for my 2 rescue staffies. They are both 2years old and have boundless energy, but alas, one of them can jump my 5 foot gates, so for the most part they are kennelled during the day while I am at work. I'm not really happy with this, and I presume neither are they, as they rip their bedding up every day and anything else in the kennel - including the fake grass!!! We are lucky to have 20 acres so are going to fence in a new area adjacent to the house yard with 6 foot fences, fingers crossed this does the trick. We are going to put in a tunnel and cover with dirt to form a hill. I will also have a shell pool and maybe a bungee toy, I'm still not decided on this though. The staffy balls look awesome so will get on of those too. Thanks everyone for the ideas.

So sorry for your loss. RIP lovely girl.

How Long Did It Take For You To Be Ready For Another Dog?
leec replied to ro11's topic in General Dog Discussion
Gee, I'm so glad to read that other people felt the same as me. I lost my old boy July 23 2013, at age 14 and a half, but I still had Maggie my girl. She passed away on 2 Jan 2014 at nearly 11. God I was a mess. I like the description above, I just didn't feel like me, the bottom had fallen out of my world, I had no-one to cuddle and talk to, I kept telling my hubby he just wasn't furry enough Anyway, I lasted a week before we brought home a male 2 year old staffie cross, white in colour and entirely different to my oldies that I'd lost. About 6 weeks after bringing Chad home and he had settled in we brought home another staffie rescue, female this time. The really weird thing about Chelsea is that her name was Margaret, she answered to Maggie! My little black girl I referred to as Queen Margaret of the Staffords, it really was sort of like a sign. Anyway, I think everyone is different to how we grieve and treasure our animals. I know for me that my animals have taught me that I have way to much love to give and I just have to keep giving it to my furkids. The dogs in my avatar are Ed and Maggie, they will never be forgotten and will always be loved and cherished in my heart. I can't let go of them, I know they will always be with me, but I have so much to offer more furkids. -
Glad to hear the good news. Hopefully he won't be too much trouble with the eye drops.

Just out of interest, have you (or anyone else reading here) tried goat? With my boy's intolerances to numerous meat protein sources, goat was something I stumbled across at our local wholesale butcher's so I bought it, hoping that he'd go well on it and be able to accept it for the bone component as well as for the meat source. But he won't have a bar of it. Anyone else tried it out with their dogs and with what degree of success? Haven't tried goat for my dogs, but I love a goat curry myself :D

This. I think dogs benefit from variety. I feed beef, lamb, pork, turkey, chicken and occasionally duck. Sadly I can't get rabbit anymore and my dogs don't like kangaroo. What size dog have you got - any reason they can't have chicken wings or larger parts of chicken? If your dogs are fat, feed less quantity, not less variety! I am just trying things out at the moment, as they are both rescue dogs and new to our home. He just has your typical staffy itchy belly and I'd like to try to help him. I have a few natural remedies and we are trying very hard, it is under control and I do believe it is a seasonal thing (as our old staffy that passed last year also had itchy belly syndrome). I have at the present time got some roo, chicken and a little beef and veal left. They do get whole chicken carcasses, RMBs, eggs, sardines etc on a regular basis as well. I'm really not convinced it is a beef allergy/intolerance, just trying things out. I do agree, that variety is good. Sorry, the OP was not very in depth.
-
They get a little kibble, eggs, sardines, RMB on a regular basis as well. Oh and pigs ears and dehydrated roo tails for time wasting :) They are both staffies, 2 year old, and get walked every day for at least 45 minutes, plus lots of chasing each other, balls etc etc. And yes, they do have those big brown eyes that say "I'm starving, feed me, pleeeaaasssseeee" but, I'm very good at resisting them. They are not overweight at all, I just don't want them turning tubby.

Thank you, I can get roo as well at the shop, so I'll give it a go and do a 50/50 roo/beef. They get a chicken neck every night with dinner :)
