Yes, ask the local vets. That's what I did when I moved :) -
Home-cooked Dog Food & Costs
Queen Maeby replied to Frenchielover's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hey Maeby, we're pretty fond of it here. Use it as training treats too. The only one he'll eat reliably is the venison and fish. It is expensive, which is why we try to stretch it out - but I'm fortunate that he's only a foxie. I have a friend with a Wolfhound who is fussy and he loves it but - goes through a lot more then my Scottman. Yes, I'm lucky that Pugs only weigh about 10 kilos :) -
Maybe you should start your own thread about vaccinating versus titre testing? This thread isnt about that. This thread is clearly for people who are interested in titre testing and want to find out where/how to do it. Sorry, it's just that you seem to have your own agenda (defending your views) and it isn't helpful; it's actually quite negative. When threads get derailed I find that people stop replying to the original question, which isn't very helpful to those who are still discussing it, so thank you Queen Maeby for trying to keep this one on track :-) I still have a few vets to call next week when I get a moment, and I will update if I find any on the Coast who are happy to titre test. Thank you to everyone who has PM'd me with suggestions :-) it's much appreciated No worries, and thank you for understanding what I was trying to do: keep the thread on track. I didn't mean to be so intense; I just feel very strongly about this :)

I feel you are taking this way way way too personally. Aidan isn't the thought police. he is just a person with an educated opinion. Okay MUP, thank you for your feedback :)

No worries LT, each to their own :) It just frustrates me when I'm trying so hard to do the right thing by my babies and I know deep down it's the right thing to do. I trust my gut instinct fully when it comes to taking care of my Pugs. If vaccinating is what is right for Aidan2 then that is fair enough, but I feel like he is pushing his agenda onto us, like he is expecting us to conform to his way if thinking.

Home-cooked Dog Food & Costs

I'm interested in trying ZiwiPeak... A lot of Pug people use it. Here is a link to their air dried dog food on the ZiwiPeak website. The lamb sounds like it might be good for dogs with allergy/digestion/kidney issues. http://www.ziwipeak.com/air-dried-dog-food-ziwipeak-daily-dog-air-dried-cuisine/ -
Home-cooked Dog Food & Costs
Queen Maeby replied to Frenchielover's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hello and welcome :) Yes, definitely get the digestion issues checked out. This is the diet I designed for my Pug and it makes 2 kilos (ten meals of 200 grams). I have no idea how much it costs though, sorry :) Chicken mix recipe: 1kg cooked chicken breast (1200g raw), roughly diced 1 cup cooked brown rice 2 cups low carb frozen raw vegetables, processed 415g tinned salmon or 4x 106g tinned sardines with no added salt ½ cup organic yoghurt 3 scrambled eggs 3 Tabs flaxseed oil (4800 mg)* Contains: 72% protein, 19% carbohydrate *1 Tab of flaxseed oil contains 1600 mg of omega-3 fatty acids. eta Sorry, I forgot to include bones: lamb shanks, which I feed on the weekends. You have to ask the butcher to chop them in half though. Grover also had a Blackmores Acidophillus capsule emptied into his meal every day. -
What I do now is transfer $50 a week into an account for my Pug. Also, that budget included pet insurance and I don't have pet insurance now.
-
Sorry, I didn't realise the OP meant in the first year :) When I first bought Grover I spent $500 initially and then $55 a week in the first year. This was well before he had any signs of cancer and needed treatment. So that comes to $3360 in the first year. eta Actually, Grover was pretty spoilt and had the best of everything. Maybe most people would spend half that on a small dog? I don't know.

Yes, they are excellent lines. Grover has three Grand Champions in his pedigree :) -

I was a bit hesitant to reply to this thread because I was worried I might annoy people by talking about my puppy KC, I know how you're feeling because I won't be getting my puppy until April next year... But I prefer to wait because this is a special mating between Grover's brother and Grover's mum's great, great granddaughter - and the mum looks so much like Grover's mum it's not funny. I like to think that Grover is talking to my new puppy and preparing him for his life on Earth with me. He's going to be a very special little guy who's worth waiting for :D I wish you all the best with it and I look forward to seeing pics of your new puppy :) Grover's mum when she was younger Her great, great granddaughter, the mother of my new puppy And here is one of Grover, my beautiful baby We had just been to the beach and I had lit the wood fire -
Mooch City Is Miserable: Myrtie Very Sick

So sorry DD -
That's what I plan to do :)

I found this PDF article on the Vetpath website: http://www.vetpath.com.au/Portals/1/vetpath/V-Info/Vaccination%20VInfo.pdf Do vets use these MLV live virus injections? Does this mean that dogs are immune for up to nine years (and probably have lifelong protection)? I must ask my vet.

Haha, Soggydon... Reminds me of a Japanese dish I used to love called Sukiyaki Don :)
-
I know, it's so gorgeous! Her face cracks me up. I think she gives a little bark as well
-
That's what she said to me, the silly woman, but she didn't tell me that they used a company in Scotland if you wanted it. Well, thanks very much for that! I suspect my vet will have no problem with not charging me for the consultation because I take my Pugs in so regularly for check ups. We go every 3 months for faecal testing (I use a herbal wormer and not chemicals). eta It makes me so happy knowing I'm doing the right thing by my babies (right for me, that is) :)

Sending Pughugs and positive, healing vibes to you and Myrtie. -
I always put $500 aside, not including the cost of the dog, when I buy a puppy. It sounds like a lot but it's not really when you think of all the things it has to cover.
-
Oh yeah, of course. It would be a mud pit (depending where you live). Thanks :)
-
Oh thanks! The silly receptionist said they didn't do it! eta I will copy that and show it to my vet so she knows that they actually do do it.
-
I have a feeling that if your vet has a regular account with Vetpath the test is only $60, but $200 if they don't have an account.
-
I haven't titre tested yet. Just so I understand... I should expect to pay for the titre test only ($60) and not the consultation fee (usually $49)? It's just that I can't imagine my vet not charging me for a consultation when I'd have to make an appointment, and have a consultation, to have the test done. Also, I remember reading somewhere that it costs more to have the titre test done with Vetpath if your vet hasn't set up an account with them. Totally dependant on your vet I'd imagine. :) Check when you're booking the appointment, just say you only require bloods drawn for a titre test and will it include a consult fee. Last time I had the tests done (no consult fee) I paid: $79 - Parvo only $196 - Parvo, Distemper, Hepatitis Prices have dropped since then though. VetPath gives you an antibody value, not just a yes/no. Okay thanks :) The lady at Vetpath told me they don't test for Hepatitis, only Distemper and Parvovirus. Have you had a test for Hepatitis through Vetpath? That's good that they give you an antibody value.

I would definitely have a doggie door. Is it better to have concrete or grass for the 'floor'?
