  1. I don't think she actually did anything wrong - until after the fact. Doped up on painkillers she posted a comment on facebook which said it was due to handler error. Which she has since removed. Haters gonna hate I suppose.
  2. Yes - I buy the smaller ones as fussy bum goes off it after its been open "too long". Fortunately for me I can only get the 3kg bags over here.
  3. I just went down to the Warehouse - which is kind of like a cross between Big W and Kmart - but better - and dog food was on sale at 20% off. I nearly died - all the VIP was gone except for two bags safely hidden away up the very very top. Had to get a guy to get it down - so I got both bags. We're kibble rich for a few weeks now. :) It's the only place I've found VIP - I pay a pretty price for it - but as I've said - it's our preferred food. PS - just looked it up on the woolies website - the 3kg bags are on sale this week but the 7kg bags still work out better value @ $30.60 per bag.
  4. I feed Scottie mainly VIP and chicken mince or necks. I tried really hard to get him onto full raw but it just caused stress and upset and ultimately a visit to the vets to get his AGs done but I understand what you're saying. Remember "the best diet is the one your dog does well on" (within reason) I think the rice is nothing more than just a filler - but if she looks well and is a good weight why don't you let her settle a bit more and then experiment with getting rid of it? I'd probably swap it out for vegies anyhow if I thought she needed extra filling up - Or other "raw extras" which can add variety and nutrients and be fed as a bit of a treat (eggs, fish, yoghurt). Coming into winter I like knowing they have a warm meal in their tummy (hello human emotions) so maybe some warm rice wont hurt. I often cook an extra egg for Scottie in winter and mix through his kibble.
  5. Maybe something makes her "flair up". Scottie will often not eat things which have grain in them - especially if I haven't realised (eg accidentally bought the wrong dog roll or treats are given to use with grains in them) Having a lactose intolerance myself I understand and appreciate him not wanting to eat something with grains in it.
  6. Oh. How traumatic for you. But it's probably all for the best. Big hugs.
  7. I could be totally wrong but I think they're different. We were feeding the grain free VAN 76 and it just looked like mince to me - no other kind of obvious bits. It was a big gluggier than human grade mince but no more gluggy than minced chicken frames. It did have a distinct smell. I've not fed the mix you soak then add to your own meat so can't (*shouldnt*) really comment - but as I said I thought they were different. I note that they have a new grain free offering in that mix. I find Scottie reliably eats the VIP - which you can get from coles and woolies. The orange label. He's not so fussed on the purple one. He's eaten the cat food too (I was literally days out from flying and didn't have a car - it was all the grain free food I could access LOL) The Orange VIP is our one go to - He's been happily eating it for over 12 months - which is a record around here. Just as a side note - you can get it in three different size bags - when I was living in Sydney's inner west that was always the small and medium size - when I moved a bit further west (Baulkham Hills) I noticed I could only get the large size. I could only ever find Applaws in coles. He wasn't a huge fan & I had to go out of my way to find it. It is imported - VIP is aussie. There have been reports of bits of plastic being found in it. There were good reviews for the Costco grain free - but I think there was a supply problem. Not sure if anyone else can commnt on that.
  8. Update here: https://positively.com/victorias-blog/my-police-dog-dog-bite-accident/
  9. What about the VAN meat from the fridge section + RMBs? http://www.vetsallnatural.com.au/raw-76-for-adult-dogs/ http://www.vetsallnatural.com.au/raw-76-graingluten-free-fresh-kangaroo/ Otherwise we alternate between Ziwipeak dry & Natures goodness grain free (maybe not the best best choice but its what my fussy boy will eat) http://www.vippetfoods.com.au/product/natures-goodness-grainfree/ We tried a huge number of dry - have tried sunday pets brickettes and Ivory coat grain free and Scottie would not eat either. I actually returned the Ivory coat to the shop. So I have a vote of zero confidence for both of those. I really wanted him to like the ivory coat as it's aussie. There was one other Aussie one I wanted to try but I never got around to it. Will see if I can find it.
  10. I've been thinking about this - I think a single bed or trampoline bed might be the best move. Maybe a single bed strung up with some canvas kind of stretcher style like Perse suggested.
  11. Yep When i started reading labels properly i was mortifed. I'll never feed another smacko or goodo again.
  12. Fat little (adorable, amazing, too cute for words) slugs
  13. To each their own dude. ;) But there is a certain something to be said for sharing "contraband" with your dog.
  14. Yeh. I get that. I just think it's really terribly sad that they can get away with the contents of the can/package differing to what is on the label. *assuming it's more than negligible. There'd be bloody hell to pay if it was baby food. I've put my faith in labels before (and it wasn't for weight management) and it just makes me sad. Yes - I'm more educated now - but we're all on a very long learning spectrum .
  15. YAY Andy:heart: We've been teaching Scottie to swim this summer. I understand what an accomplishment this is.
  16. Huge fan of nutrigel. Cleaned kennels and cat cages to get through uni. Always had a tube in the cattery for various things.
  17. Glad you bumped this WM - I was wondering the same thing. Very interesting topic / thread :)
  18. Is he a pony? I don't know if I've ever seen a photo of Mo? Can you share one with us? (Please :D )
  19. Funny. Weve got a really yummy brand made gere in NZ & they import the nuts from Oz
  20. Royal Canin and Science Diet are sold in pet shops. Black Hawk is also sold in pet shops and many people consider it to be a quality food. I think the only thing that can be safely assumed from this study is that quality control for many brands seems to be pretty crap. most people aren't sitting down and working out approximate caloric content of their pet's food based on nutritional analysis anyway. No - probably not. But there was a time not so long ago that I was advised to feed a low fat dog food and I spent a fair whack of time checking all the options to find the options for us which were low fat. Our family vet (who I adore & I know is pretty good on her continued professional development) still advises this or to check for xxx kcal/cup on label. I personally believe that there is a huge number of people out there who do simply follow vets instructions and if they're told to check the labels and find a low fat item they will and I think that's OK to a certain extent. I was certainly one of them until I adopted a dog with food allergies and was forced to really look at labels for more than a crude fat content. When I really started reading and thinking about it I was mortified. The majority of cheap supermarket dry out there is just general cereal. Noted on the brand thing - have edited title of post. Certainly firms up my suspicions that one of the sponsors brands was implicated in the study.
