Grover Is Really Sick - Another Change

She is crated and at the opposite end of the house BUT apparently he was trying to get to her - I can't say as today was my sleep-in day . -

Thanks dogslife. We will definitely be doing that if he continues to look unwell today. This morning, after sleeping in our bedroom he was fine . The bit of wood has been chucked out. Steve has placed him back in the crate this morning whilst I was sleeping in because he was way too interested in Daphne (hard not using crates in such a small house when you have entire dogs and one in season, though I probably would have chucked him in the bathroom). I think Steve felt confident because he was doing okay - will see how he is going shortly, I've just got out of bed. -

Yeah in hindsight the carcasses weren't a great idea but I just wanted to make sure that he would eat when he wouldn't touch my lovely home-cooked stuff.... -

2 chicken carcasses. I cooked up chicken & rice with yoghurt on Fifi's instructions but he wouldn't touch it. He had one chicken carcass when he first got home and then I told Steve to see if he would eat one of those when he wouldn't touch the chicken & rice - he ate it all but not as quickly or as happily as the first one. He is also back to walking all hunched and looking in pain. It has to be something here..... I hope it is as simple as getting rid of the bit of wood. -

Nup - we use Omo Sensitive. Eucalyptus ditched. Will go back to plain water and the Enjo mop. Have to be honest I haven't mopped the floor for about 4-5 weeks and I'm the one who uses the eucalyptus. Steve mopped it last week and used the Enjo. -

Since he has been home he has only been outside with one of us, or with one of us watching him. I know he hasn't eaten anything - eta but thanks for the suggestion. If I sound short with anyone its only my mind going around and around and not having time/thought to type full responses. -

Yeah - I agree. I just don't see how it can be the metal crate. I think it must be the wood if it is something here. The bedding is knitted blankets that we've had for months and months (probably a year). They just get washed every week and re-cycled through the crates. His are the same ones he had BUT they've been washed and dried and put back in. I understand what you mean about the drip - we will just take him straight back into the vet first thing in the morning. We will toss the plywood and stick something else on top of his crate temporarily to stop him walking around in it if he makes a miraculous recovery again. Cleaning the floors - we use an ordinary mop and water with eucalyptus oil in it. I'm not a big fan of chemical cleaners so we don't use them wherever possible. -
Out of interest for my friend who has just treated her dog why is that? Do you have experience of it? I saw my friend this afternoon when we were picking up Grover and she was commenting that her dog is just not the same since the bite - is this likely to be a lifelong change?

I support that suggestion, it would be a good thing to eliminate in my opinion, and good you suggested the plywood as suspect in the first place Persephone. Tris, perhaps if you can ring your Vet tomorrow, or a Duty Vet somewhere, or a Poisions Information Centre and see if you can get more information on the effects of treated wood. If it is arsenic or chromium arsenic I think that can be tested for with a blood test, so you should be able to isolate that. Yep - when I spoke with poor Jana earlier she said to immediately take him out of the crate as that seems to be causing it. I don't think it could be the floor as he was previously sleeping on the bottom piece of plywood. If it is the C-Crate itself he'll have to learn to sleep without his crate (he has always loved his crate). So - if he gets better again outside of the crate then do we try the C-Crate without the plywood first or do we just give up on it all together? -

Mistletoe is on the list of poisionous plants - maybe its the candle Just remembered that I didn't buy it until 27 December so it can't have been the initial cause so I think that is safely off the list. -

Are you all as sick of this as me? He has got flat again. We rang the vet and have moved him on her advice into our bedroom out of his crate. She thinks that he is maybe having an allergic reaction to something in our environment. I can't work out what so can you guys all help me with suggestions? He makes a terrible noise - a mix of coughing/vomitting/growling noise at times but mainly when he is touched. This is the same noise he made when he came home the first time but hadn't done it once he got home this time. Jana sent him home because she is not open tomorrow and she felt that given he was so much better he would be better at home than in the surgery on his own. Grover is predominantly either outside in the backyard or inside in the loungeroom. Prior to being sick on Christmas Day he slept in his crate which was a C-Crate we bought second-hand from Rebanne on a piece of 19mm plywood with a piece of 19mm plywood on top to stop him walking around the house in his crate at night. We put the plywood addition on around September of this year. In around October we put a new lino sheet floor down in the loungeroom. We haven't used any new cleaners. We have a few new candles in a jar we've been burning - one is lemongrass but that hasn't been used since before he was sick, one is apple pie and the other is mistletoe. The mistletoe one has had the biggest workout since Christmas Day. Our backyard isn't pretty but absolutely NOTHING has changed in it for over 6 months other than some sugar-cane mulch in one garden bed. We have now moved him into our bedroom but he won't settle and he doesn't look like the happy, prancing boy we bought home 4 hours ago. Jana's theory is that he must be allergic to something in our house and that it is something that he has built up an allergy to - what could it be? My thoughts are that it is most likely something to do with his crate as he is in that every night and for periods during the day, most particularly he has been in it a lot each time he has come home so that he would rest. Has anyone EVER heard of a dog having an allergy to a floor, or plywood, or a c-crate?????/  :) ETA - just thought - Daphne is in season and has been since Christmas Day when he first got sick? Could he possibly be allergic to Daphne????? -
A friend's dog was bitten by a tiger snake about 3 weeks ago and she has survived but she is like an old dog still by comparison to the 9 month old pup she actually is. Her dog was rushed to the vet from the moment of the bite and received treatment within 30 minutes maximum of being bitten. Time will tell if she is going to make a full recovery. I can ask all the details if you'd like but probably not tonight.

Ditto! I've been popping in regularly for news, but had to steel myself beforehand every time. Such wonderful, wonderful news that he's home and feeling a bit more like himself! me too, I was almost too scared to to open the thread, but SOOOO glad Grover is feeling Better ;) Trust me everyone I understand completely what you're saying. I had nightmares all night last night and was so frightened to make the first phone call to the vet this morning. I can't believe that last night we were preparing ourselves to lose him and tonight he is a bloody nuisance. :D :D -
If they SCREAM - it usually means nothing - I think they actually scream because they get a fright. If they are truly injured or sick, they tend to be very stoic and it's hard to tell. Foster Phoebe is a screamer - she will squeal if you try to cut her nails, she is recovering from a shattered stopper bone, and I have been there when the vet has removed the plaster which is quite hard to do, and she was so very good! :D ;) Yep!!! Ask Rebanne to show you some photos of Piper her greyhound. He literally de-gloved himself, his entire chest, on the clothes-line windy thing (which is why Bart is NEVER allowed to do zoomies in the front yard). Apparently he didn't make a sound. In the first 2 years of his life Bart cost us a fortune in cuts - in the end the vet showed me how to superglue his wounds and that is what we've done ever since :D

And a very, very, very big thank you to you Fifi for being there for the entire roller-coaster. Having you to ring on Christmas Day and a couple of times every other bloody day, having someone to listen to whilst I cried, whilst we cried, whilst I beat myself up for causing it (when I thought it may have been heat-stress) and whilst we decided last night about driving to Melbourne has kept us both sane. Thank you from the very bottom of our hearts - I don't think you know just how much that meant to us. :D ;) -

Well we have fabulous news. I'm still shocked given how he was last night but Grover is home and appearing to be perfectly fine. I have already had to tell him off for barking , he is prancing and bouncing and interested in Daphne (who came into season on Christmas Day). :D :D ;) What these dogs do to us!!! But who cares - he is home and he appears well. He is on massive doses of ABs but they seem to have made the difference. Interesting what you say Hounder as that is Grover's most likely diagnosis as well. We saw his blood test results today - yesterday his white cell count was actually only 0.4 but the vet didn't want to tell me that. Today it was 10 ;) . Definitely NOT his bone marrow - "just" a major infection somewhere unknown. who cares though hey??? :D :( -

Just rang for another update. His temperature has gone back down to normal. The bloods have been sent off and we will know more about it then - around midday. Jana is starting to be confident that it is not the bone marrow cancer but we won't know that for sure of course until the bloods come back. All those who have had desperately sick dogs will understand what I mean when I say how helpful it is to have DOLers who, quite simply, understand how you feel when no-one else does. Thank you everyone - for the PMs, the phone calls and the support. -
