  1. My parents have two miniature poodles who are siblings. Lady is Silver and Scamp is a Silver & Cream phantom. I personally think he is stunning.
  2. Bite? Testicles? Coat texture? Etc. I much prefer when a judge asks me to show my dogs bite.......too many times I have had experiences and have heard complaints about rough judges or apprehensive judges make dogs uncertain of this. Testicles are a given.....although to be honest, in some cases its pretty obvious that the dog has 2 testicles of similair size. Coat texture a brief touch if required for the breed............ Grand total the judge if required has touched your dog for less than 20 seconds........and then only if required!!!! Not in my breed... the pelt needs to be lifted off the dog's body, the texture must be felt and undercoat checked, bite needs to be examined, head needs to be measured (poor or clever grooming can alter the appearance), pads must be felt for thickness. Ribs need to be spanned (requires lifting the dog's forequarter off the table), tail should be measured. The smooth is similar- head should be measured (markings can alter perception), tail should be measured, undercoat should be checked etc. There will always be exceptions for some breeds..................... And you learn something about another breed every day...... I am of course, speaking in regards to "in general"....... and I have to ask ........how often is all that checked/measured in your general all breeds show??? Not often enough in my breed and dependent on what the Judge does gives me an idea of just how well they read their standard. I'd be very peeved if a judge didn't put their hands on two Fauves before awarding.

  4. I thought some more and felt it was only fair to come back in here and say that I would be mightily POed if I found someone was breeding Fauve mixes. I think that once you develop a real love and passion for a breed and want to see it preserved and improved on you can understand the passion others hold about breeding pedigree dogs. I definitely didn't used to "get it" quite like I do now. For me a huge part of responsible breeding is doing all you can to ensure that you are breeding from physically and temperamentally healthy dogs in order to improve on them. You should care about how they are at 6 months, 6 years & 16 years. You should want to pick them up if they're surrendered to a pound. You should just care..... Some people can breed a litter of backyard mutts and give a damn - some can breed a litter of pedigree dogs and care only about the money in their wallet. We all know that there is more to being a good breeder than being registered.
  5. no - it isn't promoting cross breeds at all. Cosmolo -= if they were doing these things and making intelligent crosses (ie working towards a standard, compatible breeds, bred for a real reason etc) then I wouldn't have a problem with them. That is how most breeds today have been developed. I agree with this. I think it is a perfect purpose and is the purpose behind a number of animals in existence today. If there was a way to force people breeding puppies of any heritage (designer, backyard mutt or pedigree) to have a degree of responsibility for each of those puppies then I would be very happy. Sadly there isn't a way to enforce that.
  6. Grover won a great cookbook at a show for BPIG once - I've used it heaps. We've won a couple of crate mats - one of my favourite prizes to be honest. My most prized possession though is my Advance Jacket from Melbourne Royal - it is worn with much pride
  7. I've picked the Fauves.... They jump on people BUT not normally on lead - only when they walk into our yard so I manage it. I suppose I will be honest and admit that I excuse it because they aren't very tall and it is easier for me to pat them when they do it. I don't encourage them to do it to others and they know not to do it whilst they're on lead. They go through doors ahead of me - really doesn't bother me. Normally I'm opening the door to let them out so I want them to go ahead of me. They have poor recall though I will admit to never having tested it. They're a scenthound - my view is, why risk it? In saying this I have thought that with my next Fauve I will work harder on recall as a pup. For the last 11 years I've owned breeds that are either not recommended for off-lead walking OR are notorious for poor recall - JRT, greyhound, deerhound & Fauves so off-lead walking is just not something I do. They would steal food if it was out but they're scenthounds. Isn't that what all scenthounds do? They can and have dug holes and been yard destructive but we're working on that at the moment. Talking to people in the UK it does seem to be a breed trait - they will dig down for insects etc who burrow in the lawn or garden, its not just a case of digging a hole for the sake of it, they're chasing something. Most breeders in the UK seem to consider that a nice garden doesn't co-exist with the breed - I'm trying to prove them wrong I'm working on fixing the above things but their good points far exceed their bad so I will admit to not being overly fussed by what they do.
  8. I don't know the names of some of my favourite stewards but I do breathe a huge sigh of relief when I see them . I will second Vicky but also Karen (?) who has Tibetan Terriers and some guy with a cowboy hat who pays everyone out.
  9. Beautiful pups!! My vet is getting a Border Terrier pup in the next week or two - a blue & tan (????). Once he has this one settled in he will be getting a grizzle. He is VERY excited!!!

  12. We are all animals, but I think there is only one (and I am open to correction here) who kills for pleasure. I think it is important to acknowledge that dogs and cats kill for pleasure. We see that sort of thing here quite regularly - dogs killing stock, not to eat them but because it is fun, they go into drive, they get a reward for that drive by the chemicals released in their brain. I have a 10 month killer JRT X Chihuahua in quarantine at the moment who killed chooks on the property he lived on - didn't eat them, simply killed them and ran over to the next one. Doesn't change the horrific nature of what happened but humans aren't the only ones who kill for pleasure.
  13. I was at one show when an exhibitor was chatting to us and their dog pissed on a bag (inside our gazebo!) containing kids colouring books & pencils . Not impressed at all!!!!
  14. I'll join but I must confess I don't walk mine on weekends - they go for a 5km walk Monday to Friday at 6am.
  15. Love the name Gilbert . Can't wait for pics. Is the breeder not keeping a male to run on? If she is not keeping a male to run on you could probably pick at any time but I would leave it as late as possible if you can because then you have more chance of picking for personality than you do for looks. It is hard to bypass those super cute looks no matter how much you know you should. I'd also ask the breeder as she will be watching them each and every day. She might be watching a pup over the weeks and thinking it could be the one for you only for it to be quiet as a mouse the day you turn up - 'cause I figure you want one with lots of oomph .
  16. I'm glad Grover is better but just need to clear up that the c crate is not dane size Trish, it's one size down. Well there you go then - I thought they only came in one size .
  17. It is a Dane sized C-Crate that he is in but he stands up and sticks his head right up and walks it around and/or escapes out of it. He would prefer to sleep next to Steve on the floor but I don't appreciate being jumped on by him in the middle of the night ;) . The vet has definitely ruled out kidney issues - she doesn't believe that it was in anyway hot enough here on Christmas Day at the time we walked to have caused it. As Fifi said - he is now perfectly fine - thank you all for your concern and help - it made a very difficult time much simpler . The last two days we have spent outside gardening and digging up clotheslines and all sorts of things and I've been too knackered for DOL - I didn't think that was possible . However whilst Grover is fine I am now sick with a stomach bug that Steve's family brought with them from Sydney - got to love family! :vomit: :vomit:
  18. It could have been an older piece of wood? It could have been. Wonder if it has bite marks chunks taken out of it? No, no bite marks. The only possible cause that I could think of was that when he eats his chicken carcasses etc he always pulls them out of the bowl and eats them directly off the ply. Originally when we fixed his crate to stop him walking it around at night we nailed the C-crate using U-shaped nails to the ply but that didn't work as the nails pulled out as he leaned on the edges. We should have left it but we figured it wouldn't do any harm and would protect the new floor. Is it possible he is just worked up about her. Huffing and puffing exhausting himself? My dog does that sulks, huffs and puffs, looks like death warmed up, loses weight, has no interest. When we were walking him on Christmas Day he showed absolutely no interest in her - that was the first day he was sick AND the first day she came into season. This morning has been the first time he has shown interest in her and she is day 7. Like you say though it doesn't explain the heart-rate, dark urine and high temperature. I think, if he continues to improve, we're just going to have to cope with not knowing. Since we moved him away from the ply he hasn't made the horrific coughing/vomitting/growling noise that he was making whenever we touched him last night and the day before. Who knows????
  19. Oh okay - sorry I misunderstood what you were saying. In the house we used Trigene. Outside we used lime BUT we also didn't allow any of the dogs access to the backyard for 2 months after the parvo, they all used the front yard. Whilst I know the lime would still have been there they didn't have access to it until it had "set" into the soil more. We have used lime previously (about 18 months ago) when we had a flea infestation but I'm not sure if Grover was here then - probably not. I suppose it could be the lime - you're right I hadn't considered that.
  20. Newbie question here BUT is it necessary to sleep next to or with the bitch for the first week with all size dogs? The reason I ask is that of the 9 or 10 rescue bitches we've had through here only one has ever squashed a pup and that was a Rotty X. They've been various sizes from Terriers through to the Rotty with the majority being Cattle Dog size and have had litters varying from 3 pups to 9 pups (the Rotty's litter). I understand that it is different when it is your own dog and a deliberate breeding so it has a higher value - well it would to me but my question is more a case of how necessary is it really? With our rescue litters we have had them inside and we check on them regularly but we pretty much just leave mum to it for the first two weeks. We provide a clean and safe place to be and high quality food but otherwise we just leave them to it. Are there any breeders who don't spend the first week with their bitch & pups who can comment on losses they've had?
  21. You had the sick puppies in the last 6 months You also got the new quarantine pen Yes but he doesn't have parvo. The quarantine pen is in the front yard.
  22. I did wonder  He seems fine and the wood has been chucked..... Maybe it was as simple as the plywood?
