  1. Today has been bitterly cold & wet - hopefully it is warmer on the weekend.
  2. Bugger - might be an idea to do progesterone testing next time as she may have a drop off in progesterone (which interestingly appears to be the reason for my last two human miscarriages). There will be someone on here with way more knowledge of these things than me though. I would be gutted.
  3. Oh no!!! I'm so sorry. I'm so worried that is what I will hear when we go for our ultrasound. You had had one ultrasound showing babies hadn't you which would mean she has absorbed them? How heartbreaking.
  4. We rehomed loads of working breeds and I love them BUT there are some that are just too much of a working dog and they were very obvious in the pound environment. Trust me, in Albury, you could have a rescue group with loads of dogs in care but they would all be working breeds - they take a very long time to rehome in a rural environment, in fact most of our working breed puppies went to cities . Most country folk down this way will tell you that kelpies shouldn't live in a suburban backyard and they truly believe it. Working dogs can have wonderful lives in non-working homes but those homes are VERY hard to come by.
  5. OMG Nimy Noo is enormous!!!! I can't believe her fat belly, it looks like it is almost touching the ground!!! Can't believe you're going to have two lots of puppies, its going to be fun at your house - thank god for timber floors huh? That is the one thing I'm freaking out about here as our new house has mainly carpet and you know how much I loved my lino floor at the old place.
  6. Yep - I'm curious about this too. Yep same answer as Rozzie. When we were running the rescue we often had true working kelpies come into the pound and, to be honest, rescuing them was often not an option - we couldn't put them into a working home as no-one would take them once they were desexed. There were a couple of working people (drovers and the like) who would come into the pound from time to time looking for a working dog and one of the local rangers would let farmers etc know when he picked up a good working dog - of course though they weren't desexed when they left the pound. There is a local kelpie stud who rehomes some of their failed workers or breeding stock by surrendering them to Albury Dog Rescue - they're happy as they know that they leave us desexed so their lines can't be used by unknown people.
  7. You seriously would cut someone off because they are not a dog person? I find that really bizarre. IMO its bizarre too - its like saying that I won't be friends with people who don't like kids, or with people who don't enjoy a drink, or watch rugby league etc. The benefits of friendship are learning about different things and different ways of life. My dogs, like my kids, are PART of my life, not my whole life. My life is made up of lots of different bits and pieces and it would be much poorer without them all in it.
  8. Woohoo Sparky Tansy!!! 5 pups would be absolutely perfect for me - actually a minimum of 4 as we have four homes waiting.

Doesn't matter how much professional guidance or professional approach you use - it won't stop an ordinary brindle mutt from being an ordinary brindle mutt which has a higher chance of being in foster care for longer than average. Should they then not be rescued? I always based my decisions on what to rescue from the pounds on a variety of factors but the major one was temperament. Dogs stayed in foster care for longer based on their temperaments too - I have pts a dog that was in long-term care but ONLY because he had temperament issues that were unresolvable. Sometimes great dogs spend a long time in care but I don't think that length of time in care should decide whether or not a dog lives or dies and I don't, honestly, think that a vet is any better able to make that decision than a rescuer. From what I've read I don't think that these laws are going to do anything to stop the cowboys. ETA I was never comfortable with euthanising a dog purely because it hadn't rehomed within a required period when it was healthy and of a good nature. If the dog was in foster care for more than 3 months and had major temperament issues that would be a different story but I have no issues with keeping a great dog in a great foster home for an extended period. Some of my absolute favourite dogs we rehomed were long-termers - one took over 12 months to find a home but it was the most fabulous home.
  10. Most DEFINITELY you guys!!! I agree. I'm sorry Deelee I think you're sweetheart but I don't understand people who need to take their dogs everywhere. I wouldn't dream of taking my dog to a non dog persons house . I have friends who want to bring their dogs when they visit or come and stay and I always say no. It's make me feel uncomfortable saying no and Im sure it irritates them somewhat but it upsets the balance with my other pets and I dont want to run the risk of someone elses dog chewing or toileting inside etc. I minded a friends Pug recently - 100% toilet trained at his home but unbeknown to any of us he spent the weekend decorating my curtains . And because I dont want other peoples dogs here my weekend is not as relaxed which seems pretty unfair IMO. Yep that is how I feel. I've also been thinking about this more and I actually prefer to have people turn up unexpectedly with their children than with their dogs. To be honest I find that the people who visit me with their children are much happier with my insistence that their children follow my rules in my house, than dog people are at my insistence that their dogs follow my rules. ETA in my experience MOST people who take their dogs with them everywhere think that they're dogs are perfect little angels and get really narky (worse than parents of children) if you don't like something they're dog does. I've had lots of lovely people visit with their dogs and their dogs "fit" into our household with such ease because they're happy to follow our rules. I really don't think its a big deal - I expect visiting children to follow my rules, I expect visiting dogs to follow my rules and here that means no off-lead action unless you're in the dog run and no free-ranging in my house - last thing I want is someone pissing or pooping on my carpet. ETA I will again make an exception for Cosmolo's dogs because they're insanely well behaved AND Cosmolo is very, very conscious of ensuring that her dogs ARE well behaved in the house, though the lovely Dexter just can't do cats
  11. I'm a strange doggy loving person - I don't love other people's dogs at my house and I certainly don't like them unexpectedly. We live on 2 acres in a rural village. We have cattle around us and we have neighbours who are okay with our dogs and we'd like to keep it that way. We have a dog run but we don't have fences between our yard and one neighbour, the other neighbour has only rural fencing. I can only think of one person's dogs who I would be happy to have at my place off-lead - and they're a professional dog trainer. I have a friend who brings her dog to our house most times she visits but she ALWAYS brings him on lead. Another friend brings hers, never has them on lead and never gives me warning that they're arriving. They run up to larger dogs in the dog run and aggravate them, then causing barking which I find really annoying. Bilbo Baggins will often stay at my house but she understands that the indoor dogs need to be cat safe AND crated at night. She also knows that the dogs need to be on lead unless they're in the dog run.
  12. Which size would you recommend for a Fauve sized dog Sway? I won't be ordering until we've got pups confirmed by ultrasound but these are on my must haves list.
  13. We're ultrasounding at 32 days - simply down to convenience to be honest as its booked for a Saturday.
  14. I don't think I've EVER been to a show with cash prizes - are they more something that happens in the city than the country? I would imagine that a cash prize is easier on the people organising the show as there would be no shopping around for prizes that are within budget and not too naff but then I would expect you'd have people whinging about getting tiny amounts of cash. Can't please people really can you? One good prize I saw a friend win for BIS was a pack with 3 phones & and an answering machine - they just put it away until their phone died (about 8-12 months later) and voila they simply replaced the old with the new.
  15. To my inexperienced eye she seems to have more of a belly in the Week 3 photos on her back - looks fuller. Fingers crossed. Its kinda nice there are a few first timers in here together isn't it?
  16. Exactly. Until you've had a crocodile wrapped on to your legs its impossible to say what you would do.
  17. I'm sure I've read in here about morning sickness in dogs before BUT I've searched and can't find anything. Do they get it? If so around what time? Marie just had a vomit - walking around the kitchen, wagged her tail, and threw up . Will keep an eye on her today and if she does it more often I will take her to the vet.
  18. Woohoo - that would have been Lara my favourite Corgi in the world. Congrats to Gail!
  19. I'm always thankful for any prize BUT the best ones we've got have been crate mats, towels and a Women's Weekly Cookbook (LOVED that one!). Oh and of course my Best of Breed Melbourne Royal Jacket that I wear with great pride!
  20. Don't think I can run Marie and Daphne together at the moment - Marie is in the dog run and just went to put Daphne in and she has hackles up and growling at the door . She NEVER does this - they normally sleep together, run together, do everything together (except eat) - please tell me that, if this is a sign of pregnancy, she'll go back to normal after? Previously, when in season, she has been a bit grumpy and the day she went down to be mated she was the same BUT never like this and never carrying on with it. Poor Daphne, she just wants to go and play with Marie as she has missed her but I really don't want them to have a fight in case they decide to hate each other for ever after.
  21. We have an ultrasound booked for Easter Saturday so fingers tightly crossed until then. Southern Regions - when is it again - I know its always cold lol? Probably, hope, to be there.
  22. We always take our own food with the exception of the occasional egg & bacon roll for breakfast - the last time I had one it was lovely . The food at the Albury Kennel Club Show is always exceptionally nice and well organised by Morsha and others.
  23. I agree completely Steve. When we ran the rescue we had a 3 week return policy in which people could get a full refund in that time but not after that. Hopefully returned dogs won't be something I have to worry about with the Fauves for a while but never say never. They will always have a home here with me until they can be rehomed but I wouldn't expect to be paying someone to have them back.
  24. OMG - I just realised who Irish Lassy is!!! Its you!!! Wow wouldn't it be exciting if we were both having babies at the same time? Marie is home today and had a growl at Daphne which is very out of character. Here's hoping that is a good sign.
