Rescue Lumping Breederswith Byb And Pet Shops

If someone rang about a dog in foster care I would always talk to them FIRST about their family and what they were after. Often you would find that they had actually been considering a pedigree dog but had decided to look at rescue first to see if they could find something similar. The reality is that in rescue you can very, very rarely predict the eventual size, look or temperament of a puppy like you can with a registered dog. Of course how you raise that dog will change its behaviour BUT there are certain consistencies within a breed that you just don't have in rescue. If someone has a need or desire for something in particular what is the point of trying to sell them a rescue dog? My goal was to place the dog into the best home possible for the dog and a home that, in an ideal would, would own a pedigree dog, should be saving to own that pedigree dog IMO. -
It might be less than 2cm - its the long bits above the bone. When you see a Fauve who hasn't it done for a while like Marie its very obvious what I'm talking about . The reality is that for Fauves to be competitive in the ring we need BOTH an excellent example AND experienced handlers & groomers. Now that we have that with Hagen and his co-owners we're seeing the breed do a lot of winning and I need to up my game to be competitive.

Yep same here! If people ever rang me looking for a particular breed or puppy I would actually go looking on DOL for registered breeders for them and have helped a number of people find a registered pedigree puppy instead of taking a rescue puppy. -
I put this in the December litters threads but in case others didn't see it I need some ideas for my current litter of Fauves. I had an idea for a theme before they were born BUT as they were born on the night of a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse (last one until 2014 I think) I thought it would be appropriate to use something about that in their registered names (there are 4 pups, 1 male, 3 female). Prefix is Trisven. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions - having never named a litter I really have no idea but have seen SOOOOO many cool suggestions on here I thought I'd ask for some help.

Yep - When I was rescuing and people came to me wanting a dog that was good with their kids the inevitably wanted a pup (this includes my brother). I could tell them over and over again the benefits of getting an adult dog but they had in their heads that they could control a pup better. Many members of the public have a view that you can only bond with a pup. My brother finally agreed to getting an older pup - the best compromise I could get him to go with. When I eventually get another greyhound it will either be show bred or an adult from GAP. Yep - when rehoming my Fauve babies I can tell people how I find Fauves to live with, how my Fauves are having grown up in my household but that doesn't mean that the pup they get from me will turn out the same as they will raise them differently. Even with careful breeding you can only control so much. -

I think it IS very important to remember that not everyone involved in rescue believes it. Sadly though there are some in rescue who think that you're terrible because you breed and some in the show/breeding world who think its terrible if you rescue. Can't please everyone so in the end you just have to please yourself. -
Scissored the extra fur at the tip of the tail - removes about 2cm from the end of the tail which improves their general outline as their tail is held up.

Very much the same with Fauves when they are shown in France - even in England they are not as groomed as they are becoming in Australia (which will only continue as we show more in the American style). When we had the English breed specialist judging last year she actually told me (very nicely) to never again scissor my dogs' tails. Stripping the coat out is fine but anything involving scissors or clippers is an absolute no go. They also prefer a coat that hasn't been washed for a while to show the true harshness than a clean coat full of product that brings the harshness back so I'm told.

Off topic but I'm curious about the storm phobia thing as we have an old JRT who was born with an eye issue meaning he has always had partial sight. He has ALWAYS hated storms yet there is absolutely nothing else that has ever phased him, bomb-proof with kids, cats, other dogs etc.... I figured his vision issues compounded his fear of storms.

Clever little Red who is learning how to "walk" rather than creep. The pups are 9 days old today and I think we'll have eyes starting to open in the next day or two. They all have their collars off now as McKenzie was right, I could tell the difference between them without the collars. ETA thought I'd add a picture of my favourite too - yes I know I shouldn't have a favourite this early but I just love her rich red colour. No doubt because I love her colour she'll be the most obvious pet at 8 weeks ;) .

YEp I agree. We had a dog come into our yard from the neighbours - he was a large mixed breed dog who had attacked/menaced a number of people before including a disabled teenager at my back fence (at one point I was working out how I was going to pull him up over the fence to get him away from the dog that looked like it would charge every time the poor kid moved). Steve heard a noise in the front (fully fenced) yard - opened the front door and got charged by this large growling dog. Ranger turned up and the dog was easily restrained at that point and taken away - he was actually returned to the owner. He was finally put to sleep by the council when he was roaming the streets 12 months later attached to a 10 metre long heavy chain bailing up people AGAIN. That dog should have been dealt with far better early on than what he was.

Yep it makes perfect sense and it is something that I hope that I'm strong enough to do with the Fauves. Only time will tell if I have the strength of conviction to carry it through.

Congrats Lappiemum!

Thanks for that Sway so I need to have 8 names I like. I like your names - Crazy is a good theme .

Has anyone got some good ideas for registered names? Prefix is Trisven and the pups were born on the evening of a full moon lunar eclipse so we'd like to have names that link back to that. Also, how many names choices do you normally submit?

Not great news unfortunately. 6 still born and two that didn't make it. That's breeding for you...anyone out there thinking of doing this sort of thing...wish they would really see the down side. Mother dog is looking for pups....normal behaviour of course. Tony frustrated and exhausted from the ordeal. She was on day 57 so not a big deal really...we suspect detatched placentas and it appears that the dead pups were about 24 to 36 hours dead when whelped. Nothing much a person can do in that situation. Bekki's litter doing great....and I"ll start preparing for my girl now. Oh no Angelsun I'm so very, very sorry. Please pass my sympathy on to Tony.

Congrats Pockets!!

Much as I love Rebanne's pups I truly don't think that there is a market in NE Victoria for a 6 month old greyhound pup from a sale point of view when you can get an adult greyhound for free without too much trouble. Having sold puppies of various breeds in the area for 6 years (through the dog rescue) I can tell you that it is VERY hard to sell a greyhound puppy. I'd be pretty sure that he was stolen to be used to breed pigging dogs down the track as greyhounds feature very heavily in the local pigging dogs. Either that, because he has such great bone etc they thought that he was a greyhound X already.

I think this may actually be the problem with Blue as his little sore is on the point of his shoulder - Fauves are supposed to have a short neck in their standard, plus being such little fatties their necks look shorter . The others are still fine so I'm keeping an eye on them. I also think that next time I'll probably buy some Identa-kit collars to start with as they are thinner and have suggested this to Neil who is expecting a litter in January as I gave him my left over collars to trial.
-
Ashlyn can tell the difference between them all without collars so I'm going to pay more attention and see if I can

Beautiful pics

And after saying that I had no problems I've noticed that Blue has a little sore on his shoulder that I had thought was a bit of fluff so his collar is off and I'm trying to learn to tell the difference between the two reddest girls so I can take their's off.
-
my experience was the same. I made them narrower by cutting them in half lengthwise and then making them much shorter as well, no wrapping them around and around themselves. I haven't had a problem with them as yet BUT I'm making sure that they're quite loose and am checking them a couple of times a day as Anne had mentioned she'd had some issues. So far so good and it is definitely helped by the fact that I'm home working and can check on them every half hour or so. When I put them on I make sure that I can fit two fingers underneath and rotate it around their neck with ease.
-
Actually no it is not all they endure - try having to deal with a dog who is now scared of small yappy dogs and spend money on a behaviourist to deal with that issue (so he does not develop fear aggression). Yep....

Don't envy you that fun Nevafollo!!! Look forward to pics of your babies - you know I love a Pointer!
