Steve, what is the mechanism for gaining that approval? There has to be some kind of mechanism if approval is required. I think I get what Ringo is saying - if the mechanism for approval is through the council LEP, then the Land and environment court makes a distinction between commercial and non-commercial which is relevant to application of the LEP.

No Tralee, I would suggest YOU find out what the changes are before making conclusions about them. Standards are amended all the time. The Pyrenean Standard was amended last year. Most of the changes are in relation to the standardisation or clarification of wording - the kennel controls generally require standards take on a standard form and wording and often as these requirements change so do the standards. Without knowing exactly what the changes are that are being proposed there is absolutely NO WAY to know the intent or effect of those changes. Any discussion of changes without knowing what they actually are is wild conjecture at best, possibly misleading, and serves absolutely no purpose at all.

This is the type of person that really scares me. Well done to the magistrate, but it sounds like this person will be a continued high risk of repeated violence to both animals and people.

My question would be what are the amendments they are proposing? Are they clarifications to make the meaning clearer so there is less ambiguity? You say they were said in relation to the photo but the context is not clear. Is there currently room for interpretation that they are trying to remove? Or are they changing it in some other way?

Don't be sorry. It is actually an interesting application that had not occurred to me. There ate lots of things that different breeders do to prepare pups for life 'out there' from the super dog program, desensitization CDs, rule of sevens and the like. the use of DAP to help transitioning to new homes sounds interesting though the jury is likely still out on its usefulness. Would be interesting for instance to see if first night crying etc which many owners experience would lessen statistically when using DAP in this way.

Have to agree with Steve. The issue isn't breeding or owning a dog with a significant fault. I am betting we have all had one or more at some point (I know I have). But rather the defending of it as being of no consequence in a breeding program.

As mentioned it is NOT liver. Best way to describe it is a black that is 'incomplete'. As Steve mentioned it is enzyme related. Pigment is genetically black, but is poorly expressed and 'faded' making it look brownish or pink. Please don't confuse this.

You can also get heated dog beds. A lot of the big hardware stores have them from time to time and you can get them online. For example: http://www.dealsdirect.com.au/pet-supplies/pet-beds-heated/ They dont get overly hot, but will warm enough that they should help keep her comfortable. Perhaps put a 'bolster' around inside the crate to raise up the sides inside and help insulate and stop drafts.

Ditto all the above. Be careful of 'letting him grow coat for winter' though. Every spring when I was a groomer I would see a procession of dogs whose owners would say the same thing. Usually the coat would need to be shaved off to the skin (often coming off in one felted piece) as the owners failed to keep up the even more regular grooming that was required. You are better off keeping the coat short and manageable and having him wear a dog coat if he is really cold than letting it grow long and not keeping it well brushed all the way to the skin.

Breeding a problem is not a crime. What is important though is what you do then. Recognizing the issue then working to eliminate it is way better than defending and trying to justify it.

Many of the definitions re breeders are contained in the code of practice for breeding dogs and cats. Currently this is mostly guidelines but one of the recommendations is to make the whole thing enforceable standards. It is this document which will have the most impact.

The distinction should be made between liver pigment (not in maremma) and decreased black pigment which shows up as brown (think 'snow nose'). This problem sometimes surfaces in all white Pyr and is considered to be an unwanted and incorrect 'dilution' (not 'dilute') of the black pigment. As the standard calls for good black pigment it is not correct.

How on earth do you come to the conclusion that skin cancer is not an issue in Italy??? Even a quick look at the literature shows that melanoma is just as much an issue in Europe as it is here. Or is it that they consider good black pigment important there so dogs with lighter noses are rare?
