  1. thanks I'll check that out! We're taking him out every 3ish hours overnight and he doesn't pee his bed at night, he does it in the day immediately after waking! I take him out every 30-60 minutes in the day and have training pads in 2 places in our house. I know Dachshunds are notoriously hard to toilet train but still wasn't expecting him to pee in his own bed! Fingers crossed he stops soon. I may have had a mini breakthrough but not cheering just yet. I took Frank's bedding out of his crate and put it under our desk and he put himself to bed! Perhaps he just doesn't like the confinement?
  2. hi all! Frank is settling in slowly but he is proving to be a bit difficult. Has anyone else had a pup who needs to be cuddled to sleep?! Seriously, someone has to cuddle him until he's fast asleep then gently transfer him to his bed and pray he doesn't wake or you have to start again. He is just like a baby!! Any suggestions? Oh and he hates his crate and pees all over his bedding
  3. He's a Dachshund. I'm not sure it was still a case of being in a new home but 3 days of barely eating and losing weight is enough to convince me to try something new. I mixed some warm water to his kibble to soften it and he enjoyed that too. He's had 2 servings of Big Dog Barf and so far he is happy. I'll be keeping a close eye on him over the next couple of days.
  4. Thanks :) I gave him a little bit and he scoffed it in seconds! I'll have to go back and get more. I thought it was quite fairly priced too so that is a bonus.
  5. Has anyone else tried this and have any opinions positive or negative about it? Our pup came home on Friday and we were told by his breeder he was weaned onto Black Hawk Puppy food and beef and turkey mince. He doesn't like any of those so he's lost a bit of weight. Our breeder has gone interstate for half a week and I haven't been able to get through to her yet but I have left her a message asking her advice. In the mean time our local pet supply shop recommended Big Dog Barf - 100% natural raw dog food and gave us a sample to try.

    Cold Puppy

Thanks for the replies :) His bed in the dining room next to the lounge room where he can see us. I'm fairly sure it is the cold as it was awful taking him out to wee just before. We have floorboards so not exactly warm! I have an old rug under my bed I could put under his crate. I'm near the CBD Christina so Munno Para is a bit far but I will check my local tomorrow to see if they have any of those beds. It'll fit into his crate easily :)

    Cold Puppy

We got our puppy today and it is a little chilly where we are. He obv. doesn't have his mum or littermates to keep him warm and he's shivering quite a bit if we're not holding him. He has a soft, cosy bed and a blanket. What else can I do for him? Is a hot water bottle under his bed safe or could he chew through it? He's only a very small puppy (dachshund)
  8. Hi all! I can finally join in here! Frank came home with us today. He slept most of the hour drive home but woke whimpering a couple of times. He is now fast asleep on my youngest son's lap. He is totally adorable and I've never seen a running puppy look so funny before with his flapping ears
  9. Frank is home safe and sound and very tired! He is now snoozing on the lap of my youngest son

    Puppy Necessities

lol wonderful. I haven't done the sleepless nights things for quite awhile but luckily I am a serious hoarder of all baby things so I guess all those old blankets I have stashed away will come in handy  Thanks for the shampoo recommendation Tassie :)

    Puppy Necessities

I had dogs the entire time growing up (BC's, Poodles and an Australian Terrier) but I've never had one as an adult. I just had all the fun times with the dogs ;) We've been waiting for a long time for the time to be just right!

    Puppy Necessities

We use baby wipes for everything around here so we have plenty! Thanks for the tip. I forgot, we bought a small fleece blanket for him so I'll take that along tomorrow to try get the Mum and other pups scent on it. Thanks everyone! I'm such a newbie!

    Puppy Necessities

We don't really have the room in our house for a play pen unfortunately! Luckily I'm home a fair bit so he can play in the house and outside most of the time. Should I buy some shampoo for him and what is a gentle brand I can get?

    Puppy Necessities

I want to get him a hand-stamped name tag but have no idea where to even look so I may just have to get one engraved for now.

    Puppy Necessities

Oh yes I've been on that thread a couple of times :) thank you. We're getting a smooth standard Dachshund.
  19. Hi all. We're picking our puppy up tomorrow and was just wondering what you would consider necessities to have on hand. We have a crate and a few toys. He's being sent home with a collar and lead and we have bought his food. What did you end up needing?
  20. tomorrow is the big day! We're finishing off our shopping and hopefully we have everything. We are so excited to be getting him! He is such a beautiful chocolate colour. We're planning on buying a Basset Hound in a year or two but I think we may have our work cut out for us finding one! Kanae - Waffles is adorable!! The weeks will go quickly! dotdashdot - Not long to go until you bring your baby home! Do you have any photos?
  21. Our pup is all set to come home a week earlier than originally expected at 8 weeks instead of 9 weeks so we will have him on Friday!! He passed his vet check with flying colours, has been totally weaned, has been vaccinated and microchipped and apparently is quite cheeky and full of himself  We have some serious shopping to get done now. We ordered his crate on Monday and have bought him toys but will need to get all his food and a bed. He's been weaned onto Black Hawk puppy food and is eating beef and chicken mince so I guess we'll keep that up for a week or so and then start to add in some pureed vegetables and eggs and introduce some chicken wings and necks. And here are some photos. Sorry for the poor quality of some. When we first visited the puppies were in a darkened room and I didn't want to use a flash :) Frank at around 2 weeks old when we first met him Frank with his brothers and sisters and Mum Frank at around 4ish weeks Frank at around 6 weeks Frank at 7 weeks
  22. Thanks for the replies and thanks for the links :) sounds pretty similar to teaching a baby to self settle  if the smaller the better for a crate perhaps we'll buy a small size and upgrade to a medium size once the pup grows. That is if I can't find an adjustable one. I really don't have a clue what I'm looking for. We haven't had a puppy in our little family before. My last dog was when I was 12 so a good 15 years ago!
  23. oh and 2 more questions. What size crate would be needed for a small/medium dog (small in height, medium in length lol!) and are wire or soft more suitable?
  24. lol and I bet I'll be offering plenty of photos with no prompting  I will have some more photos when we visit again in 2 weeks.
