  1. Thanks Bianca. Sorry I have messaged you. I see that your boy seems ok now. It has been such a shock to me that they have said that Lace needs doing. I am so worried about her pain. Yes, I thought of the expense but I don't want to lose her. I am willing to go without so that she has the best care available. We live in the country so I think that she will need to go to Brisbane for the operation. I need to ask the Vet can I talk to the specialist about it all. I am willing to spend my money on her, she is such a sweet girl and our other dog Holly misses her so much
  2. Thanks so much !! I really appreciate your kindness.
  3. Hi Bianca, Sorry - I have just gone back quickly and cannot find your reply or my other thread - so sorry. Did the hip replacements work well?? Did your dog go through much pain with it? And how long before he/she was able to mobilise and get back to normal etc? So sorry to have to ask you again, I will keep looking for your first reply too.
  4. Hi again, I have the Golden Retriever who was hit by the car 2 weeks ago. This afternoon I got the worst phonecall from the Vet. They xrayed the hip as Lace has been on 3 legs again and whimpering a bit. It has come out again!! They said that they have sent the xrays to the Specialist in Brisbane for advice. They said that the toggle is not an option as her other hip would not take the strain. They think the removal of the femur head is not an option either for the same reason. They are talking hip replacement. We have to go in tomorrow to work out the next move. I need to find out what the success rate of a hip replacement is and how much pain would be involved for Lace. I am gutted and frantic. I just did not expect this after this mornings call I made when they said that she was doing ok. I just have not thought of this becoming an operation or worse still - losing Lace. Does anyone know if a hip replacement in a 1 year old dog would be successful and not too painful?? I really need help on this, I did not expect this at all. Thanks for reading, I hope that I can get some advice. I am also praying that tonight she will be comfortable enough, they promised me that she has had a lot of pain relief and is ok at the moment
  5. Thanks so much for your help, interest and advice 't' and 'p'!! I have really appreciated your help and insight. It has made me realise that in the future (here's hoping that that will be few and far between however!), I will go back to my original Vet that I used to go to with our beagles years ago. I have actually rang them about Lace and they have been so supportive even though Lace is with this different Vet. I agree with you that the leg should have been monitored better and in hind sight I will make a note to myself about it all. You have given me very good and stable advice when I have been worried and panicy and I appreciate that very much. I look forward to being able to tell you that Lace has made a full recovery.... I am hoping that this will end well now with no more dramas. It was interesting yesterday afternoon - the vet himself rang me again to reassure me that Lace was going along a lot better now, and that they had bought her some chook necks which she simply hoovered down!! I had asked so many questions in the morning call that he must have been a bit worried - and rightly so - Lace is my baby!!! and she deserves top treatment as all our pets do. Thanks again.... In the future I will be asking heaps more questions about my pets' treatment and not be afraid to speak my mind, because I have realised that the Lace could not speak up and tell them that her leg and foot were hurting her which they must have been! That haunts me a lot now.
  6. Thanks for your reply. No. she has been at the Vets the whole 10 days. The vet just rang and said that she has improved dramaticly since yesterday and is starting to put the foot down now. They have her on antibiotics and cream etc for the dermatitis. They are going to xray the hip tomorrow or Friday to see if it is still stable. He is quite happy with her progress today. I still feel worried but a bit better since his call. Thanks again.
  7. Hi again, Just talked to the vet and he said that the foot is still swollen but going down, he said that the bandage had to be tight to keep the hip in place and this often does happen - but he has assured me that it was not lack of circulation and permanant damage... They are going to xray the hip again to check it after she puts her weight on the leg. I asked him what he thought her chances of a full recovery are and he said that it is looking promising at this stage and they will know more when she actually weight bears on the hip and walks with it. So now I will just hope and pray that she is in good hands. And read up as much as I can. Thanks again and any more advice would be very welcome...
  8. Thanks so much for your thoughts and advice. I will look into the other websites later this morning thanks 'persephone'. I will ring the vet shortly to see how the foot and leg are going this morning - had a bad night with worry that Lace will chew her foot... I don't think I can wait until they xray her to find out how she is going. I am thinking that if after this we are still worried we may have to move her and get another opinion. Yes, she is a gorgeous dog; so sweet. I only hope that this morning has brighter news for us. Thanks again
  9. Oh, thanks so much for your quick reply. Yes, she is being treated for the dermatitis the vet said - she is still in hospital so I haven't seen the foot/leg. I really appreciate your fast reply - I just cried when he rang and told me..
  10. Hi, Just asking for more help if I could please. My Golden retriever was hit by a car 10 days ago and has had her leg strapped to hold the hip in place. The vet took off the strapping today and found that her foot is very swollen and she has dermatitis badly there and from what he described, not sure how far up the leg. He said that they cleaned it up but Lace is unwilling to put the foot down to check how her hip is going. They are going to xray it tomorrow morning but he said that it feels like the hip is still in place. I am very worried about the dermitis and swelling in the foot now. I just wondered if anyone out there has had any problems like this and how bad it is for Lace's recovery. Thanks so much for reading,
  11. Thanks so much to everyone for your replies. I have read your reply closely, Rappie. I will talk to the vet this morning and ask what he thinks will be the best outcome for Lace. Being a Golden Retriever and being only 1 year old and very active I am afraid that more surgery may have to be the best option. The vet said that her xrays show she does not have very deep hip sockets and that is worrying me. Her parents have hip scores of '3' for the Father and '5' for the Mother, I am not sure what this mean. I am at the moment trying to get as much information as possible. Thanks again.
  12. Hello, I need some urgent advice here please. My 1 year old Golden Retriever was run over yesterday and at the vet they found she had a dislocated hip. They operated and put it back in. I have just now had a phonecall from the vet to say that the hip has gone out again and they are operating now to put it back in again. I am so upset - can anyone advise me as to the outcome of this or what they may have to do to stop it happening again? I will be talking to the vet again tomorrow but being Sunday afternoon today they just wanted to get in and operate at the moment. Thankyou for reading - I hope someone can advise me.
