I had my first litter before I learnt to show, not the way I would have liked it but that's what happened. I showed the pup I kept a handful of times but didn't really learn anything as I knew no one and had no mentor. I lost her to snake bite at 18 months. I gained a Dobermann and by showing my Dobermann under the guidance of his breeder I learnt so much, not just about Dobermanns but about dogs in general, structure, type, movement, what makes a good dog and breeding. When I had my second bullmastiff litter I knew more, just from showing my Dobermann. I kept two pups and continued to show. Last year I had another litter and in the 2 years since my last I had doubled if not tripled my knowledge, and formed strong ideas in what i was aiming for and what i liked and didnt like. Yes I read and research but in my opinion the show ring is excellent for learning and teamed with a good mentor is invaluable. I Believe if I just bred and not showed I would have no idea what I was really doing, be able to point out the good/bad/differences in dogs or whether my breeding was going in the right direction. Obviously if if I had a working dog, gun dog etc I would want to compete in those fields as well. Unfortunately I'm not able to test out what my dogs were originally bred for, lol.

Chase is 13.5 months now and whilst he still has a couple more years of maturing to do, he is starting look like a big boy now. Took these pics today, I swear he doesnt look this mature in the flesh but as they say the camera doesnt lie, so maybe Im just used to looking at him everyday and dont notice the changes until I see photos.

I had 2 large litters at the same time. One of 11 and one of 9, 4 days apart. I'm not sure how I did it to be honest, but I would take 1 from the 11 and put with the 9 to make 10 on each bitch. I also supplemented. My girls didn't seem to have alot of milk and after the first lot being born and losing weight in the first 2-3 days I didn't want to leave it any longer for her milk to come in properly. So all pups had a combination of mums milk and supp and I started weaning from 2-3 weeks and boy did they love it! There was no way I was taking 20 pups to my vet, lol, so he came to me for vacc and microchipping, however I did have to take 15 in for vasectomies/ tubals, at 8 weeks. I just did 5 each day over 3 days. I'm looking forward to having only one litter next time, lol.

Whats Required For First Obedience Trial
Kaffy Magee replied to Kaffy Magee's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
What happens with entire dogs? My boy is entire and it's a bit of a worry if there is another entire male next to him, do they put them at opposite ends for safety at all. My boy has never shown aggression to anything male or not but I can't say I wouldnt be worried if he is sitting next to another Large entire dog. -
Whats Required For First Obedience Trial

Thank you so much for the replies. OsoSwift your answers were very helpful. Kynan, I'll check that link out, thank you! GSDog2, I'll check out youtube too, good thinking! Murve, well done on moving up a class! I take it you have paps, I have one too, and they make great little obedience and agility dogs, they are very smart Is CCD and CD exercises the same except one is off lead and one is on? Do you have to do CCD first before you can do CD? And do you think age matters when trialling, ie: is it better to wait until they are more mentally mature. He is 13 months old. Im more into showing than obedience mainly becasue Bullmastiffs arent your typical obedience dogs but Chase seems to work really well, which makes it more fun for me, so Im quite excited about starting up with him (and thinking of having a crack a agility too when he is older). I think I could only do half hour training classes max with him though(which I think is plenty anyway), he was buggered after 20 minutes the other night, lol. I might take one of my other dogs along aswell and do half a class each. -
I want to start trialing my Bullmastiff in obedience. He isnt at that stage yet, but thats the goal. I want to know what is involved and what exercises are we required to do. Do they have to do a stand for exam? Is there a rule book or somewhere that explains what you can and cant do. You cant talk to your dog can you? Can you treat them at any time? Is it all one long exercise or can we relax between exercises. Do you use the word wait or stay when doing recalls? I know you should step off on left foot for heeling, and right foot when you give the stay command, is this a rule or just a training tool? Can you in the recall exercise say your dogs name to get its attention if required? I did obedience many years ago and know the basic commands and have just been training my dogs at home since then. Currently Im just working with Chase at home, he can heel, sit, stand, drop, stay (from sitting, dropped or standing), recall and return to heel. He hasnt done this under much distraction though, but did pretty well tonight considering there was a bitch at the peak of her season just metres away,he only lost it after she came running to me as well when I called him from his stay. I havent had anyone to do a stand for exam either, although he is a show dog is used to judges going over him, Ive always been right beside him though. Im going to go along to the local obedience club this Thursday and check them out. He needs to work with distractions and other dogs around to make him more solid so I'll probably join. CAn anyone help with my questions, much appreciated, thank you

I find this fascinating. Do you leave them out with the flock from babies or are they only put out full time when older? Do you have dogs andbitches? What happens if the bitches come in to season, will the dogs leave their flock to follow the bitches scent or should you only have bitches? Then what happens with stray dogs or wild dogs, will the bitches allow them to mate? And if they get Pregnant do they whelp out in the paddock or does the owner bring them up to the house, which I imagine they wouldnt likebeing taken away from their flock and what they know to an unfamiliar environment. Thanks for the info it's very interesting stuff.

http://www.frasercoastchronicle.com.au/story/2011/05/17/police-teen-tried-to-drown-dog-fraser-coast/ WHEN police dog Quattro cornered a 17-year-old alleged offender in Urraween bushland on Sunday night, they thought the chase was over. Instead, the desperate teenager attempted to turn the tables on Quattro by drowning him in a creek, police alleged yesterday. The dog survived and will now spend the next week recuperating in Brisbane. Acting Inspector Tony Cole called a press conference at the Hervey Bay police station yesterday to shed light on the case, after the courthouse next door was abuzz with the release on bail of the alleged offender, Tiam Fisher. According to Insp Cole, police responded about 10pm Sunday to a number of 000 calls in relation to two young men who were said to be trespassing in backyards and throwing beer bottles at people in Caddy Ave, Urraween. When police attended, Fisher, 17, allegedly fled with another male, a juvenile who was arrested a short time later, Insp Cole said. Quattro, 5, sprang into action, tracking the teen said to be Fisher through bushland to a nearby creek. Here, in the dark water of the creek, it is alleged Fisher grabbed Quattro and tried to drown him by holding his head under the surface. Quattro's handler, Sergeant Ian Grigoris, said he saw the attempted drowning and intervened to save the dog's life before arresting Fisher. The defendant is said to have received a bite injury to his leg and cuts to his hand when one of his beer bottles broke during the course of the incident. Insp Cole said it was important for people to remember not to try to escape from police dogs. “If you are being pursued – stop, stay still and comply with all the commands of the dog's handler,” he warned.

Heartworm Prevention In Dogs
Kaffy Magee replied to Blakbelgian's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Im interested in learning more about giving Heartworm bi monthly. Is there any hard evidence that you can or is just a "my vet said so thing"? I'd like to read up a bit on it if possible. Cheers -

So 2 weeks ago if that, my OH broke our venetian blind. I had continually told him not to pull them to open the windows, because its going to break. You can open the window by just slipping your hand through and sliding the window back. But he didnt listen and it broke, so now at the top its taped up with grey duct tape. I was annoyed becasue I had told him repeatedly not to pull them up. Fast forward to today. Im on computer, my 12 month olf bullmastiff chase is sleeping on his bed beside me, had been in for about half an hour. I just let my bullmastiff girl kijana in as she was barking at the neighbour. I return to my seat. Next thing OH arrives home after going for a bike ride and brings his bike up onto the patio against the window and kijana, goes off and runs to the window cos she can see "someone" through the window. In a split second,Chase flies of his bed to the window, about 3.5 -4 metres away and jumps up and bends/breaks some of the plastic venetian blind thingies. I am annoyed but no point carrying on, stomping around and sooking about it, its done, the dog doesnt understand it was just one of those things that unfortunately sometimes happen. He is a dog and shit happens. OH comes in and says "couldnt you have stopped him?" Um no, it happned so quick, he was on the bed and then gone in a flash. "What was he doing inside anyway, its a nice day outside, they should be outside". I wasnt aware that now they "arent allowed" inside during the day Argument follows as apparently "i dont care about what the dogs do but he only has to do the smallest thing and gets in trouble. I went off at him when he broke the blind (which i didnt, i just did an i told you so spiel) but i dont care that the dog did it etc I tried to explain he is a dog and so stomping around and getting upset after the fact will prove pointless, what did he want me to do? Which then all turned into he resents the dogs because he has to miss out on doing stuff he wants to do because we have to buy dog food etc. Things are very tight at the moment, as I cant find work, and he is only working part time( hopefully up to full time soon). The dogs are going without at the moment except for food, which isnt anywhere near as good as what they used to get for the time being. He wants to go to some muay thai thing this weekend, but really we can not afford it. I have cut costs with the dogs big time, but apparently thats not enough, I shouldnt be feeding them either  I just wish he would accept the dogs are here always will be. We always fight about the dogs, Ive told him in the past it wont work between us if he cant accept them, because the dogs are a huge part of my life, aside from my family, they are all I have and all I want so they are not going anywhere, if anything I will end up with more in the future. Anyway, was I in the wrong about the whole blind thing? Its just really peed me off and I needed to vent. I know Im not the only one with an OH that doesnt like the dogs but my OH thinks Im delusional and Im so wrapped up in dogs that my sense of thinking is warped and Im the only one he knows that treats there dogs the way I do, which I guarantee you is not over the top. Not spoilt, ok maybe on occassion, but not as a regular occurrence. Im just sick of fighting for something I love so much and will never give up. Any suggestions?

Didnt Know Bull Mastiffs Come In Blue
Kaffy Magee replied to memphis09's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks JRZipper, lol, I have to say it's been driving me nuts too, ive just been biting my tongue. I tell you what it pisses me right off when these d heads try and pass off their x breeds as bullmastiff. In just recent weeks I have met one bloke with a tiny white and red pup which to me looked like a 6 week old jack russell x staffy, half the size of an 8 week old bullmastiff puppy. I had 2 of my bullmastiffs with me and he asked me " what breed are they?" I told him " they are bullmastiffs" his reply was " yeah? This pup is half bullmastiff, I saw his mum who I was told was pure bullmastiff but she looked nothing like your dogs". I've met a couple of others with " pure bullmastiff" that look nothing like bullmastiffs and I met a lady who wanted to use my boy Overher daughters pitbull bitch cos they'd make gorgeous puppies, and proudly declared the pitty is registered as a bullmastiff x . What they don't understand is should any of these so called purebred bullmastiffs or bullmastiff crosses be involved in any attack on dog or human it is my breed that is getting destroyed and another nail in the coffin for BSL. Sorry For the rant but geez it makes me wild. -
Bartok, I agree. I think small breed pet puppies should be desexed and large breed pet puppies have vasectomies or tubal ligations, which I have done on my pups, unless the owners request a full spay or neuter. Unfortunately people can be great liars or honestly may not intend to breed but it only takes a thought or a suggestion from someone else to change their mind. I dont have to worry about that now and that is a huge worry taken from my shoulders.
-
Limited only. The only time a pup should go on the main register is if it is of exceptional quality and is going to be shown or bred from.

My list consists of Bullmastiff, what I own now and always will Dobermann, have owned previously Boxer, Boston Terrier, most likely my next breed or Possibly a Basenji, currently researching now as its only a new interest. And my must haves should I ever have the time to groom, lol Afghan hound, Samoyed, Alaskan Malamute My list has dropped considerably as Ive gotten older and researched more. I doubt I will ever own an afghan, malamute or samoyed. I wish I could but the grooming does not appeal to me and since Im heavily into showing, I would have to keep right on top of the grooming. The other breeds I will have. In regards to the boxer and dobermann, different to Bullmastiff, however its nice to have a breed I can take out for a good run, bike ride or for a more satisfying training experience. I love my bullies but some things I just cant do with them to the extent I want.
