  1. Copy and pasted from my thread in breeders. The outcome of Chases issue. My brain is fried and I cant remember everything that was said, I remeber "this is very bad, life or death bad", my heart sunk at those words. If we cant drain the blood from his penis thats extremely bad, we're talking he could have to have his penis removed, if he has no penis he cant wee and he has to be able to wee, if we can drain the blood he has to pee, if he cant pee after that, its not looking good. Thankfully with him squeezing his penis from tip to base the blood drained, I immediately took him out and he had a good easy pee. (Hadnt peed since the night before). By the time we got back in he was hard again. Specialist says, we have to stop him getting erections so unfortunately but neccesary he has been put on Suprelorin. Its better than the alternative, which by the sounds of, there isnt one. I asked if we could collect him first but he felt it was too risky to let him have a full blown erection at his stage, He said it may not but it could cost him his life, so I didnt. Its a freak thing, he says they write books about other medical issues but they dont write books about this because its so rare and hes sorry I got the weird one, lol. He has student form the US with him, so she saw/learnt something she has never seen and probably never will see again. So he has whats called Priapism and sometimes it can just happen, no known cause. He's not sure what will happen after the suprelorin wears off, he says its unchartered waters. He said he will write out and explain it for me on paper and send it to me and if I have any questions to contact him. Which, now, on the drive home I thought of some. Anyway until the drug kicks in , I have to drain his penis of blood everytime he needs to pee. The reason the blood needs to be drained is becasue it flows in to the penis, and usually it seeps back out and the erection goes down, but when its been in there for a while the blood turns to "sludge" and cant seep out. Im not sure why his doesnt seep out though, is it becasue his erections stay there too long, hence the turning to sludge, why is his erection different to any other dog, or the ones he has before, why all of a sudden cant it seep back out? Hmmm...I think its just one of those things but its doing my head in how something can work fine and then just stop working. I want to know how he knows its not caused by something else. Not because I doubt him, but just becasue Im curious. He was bloody brilliant, explained alot of how it all works, gave me confidence in what he was doing, I didnt once think this guy has no idea, he was straight on to it and I was in awe, he was awesome and would thoroughly recommend him. Chase was such a good little man. When the specialist was being quite invasive with his penis, to a point im not sure exactly what he was doing he said to me that he couldnt believe Chase was just lying there and letting him do it. He said no dog has ever let him do what he is doing, they have always had to be anaesthetised for them to perform it. He just could not get over how good my little man was, no squirming or sooking whatsoever (even though his penis is all bruised and sore). So thats basically it. He is alive and thats all that matters. "Priapism is a persistent penile erection lasting longer than 4 hours, without sexual stimulation. Priapism is categorized as either nonischemic (arterial, high flow) or ischemic (veno-occlusive, low flow). Ischemic priapism is considered an emergency in people. Reports of priapism in dogs are uncommon". Chase has ischemic priapism.
  2. Thanks Deb He's doing ok, happy as ever Did you go to the show today? Im heading along tomorrow, I have both entered, so will show Kalais and will see how chase is doing whether I show him or not, I cant have him running around the ring with his thing hanging out, lol. The specialist said it will take a couple of days before the erection will go away, so I'll just play it by ear. Thanks for the offer of help, but all is good. I reckon Specialists are called that becasue they are Special people. I have only seen two, both with Chase, Phil Thomas on Friday and Charles Kuntz in Vic last year in October and both men left me in awe. Wonderful wonderful men and I'll never forget the help, care and understanding they gave. Will post the result in here now Definitely breathing a sigh of relief Nina. I was sooo tired from stress and lack of sleep, I had a huge 4 hour nanna nap today and could have slept for longer What was your experience with the Suprelorin Nina, other than it wearing off sooner, what other effects did it have? I have read the changes can vary from dog to dog but Im curious to hear especially from other large dog owners. Oscar went to his new home today too, she loves him ;) Anyway must go get sorted for tomorrow. Deb and I will be around one day soon, I look forward to meeting you
  3. Thanks for all the info posted I rang the vet this morning. I wasnt as concerned about Hendra, having heard they can only get it from horses (although do they really know thats the only way for a dog to get it?)but I new they got Lyssa virus aswell. They said it there would be a very very very small risk of the dog getting it, there has only been a handful of cases recorded in the country (?) apparently. The DPI will only test on a bat if it has actually bitten a human not a dog. They do have the rabies vaccine if I wanted to get it done and she said one dog had it done but it catches bats all the time. I feel this was a one off case with my dogs so I dont think Ill worry about it. Ive relaxed now
  4. Ive put it in a bag in the freezer. Big bat too. The last thing I need is diseased bats infecting my dogs with shit.... OH thinks I should get rid of the dogs, then Ill be able to relax, lol. Not gonna happen, but yes they stress me out
  5. I just heard one hell of a commotion outside, put it down to bats, then thought it could be cats fighting, better check it out. All the dogs are rushing around then they all rush into the dog pen. Its too dark to see anything so I drag all the dogs out and shut the door. Went and got a torch, not sure if Im going to find a cat or bat. Its a bloody big bat, now dead Im freaking now. What do I do?
  6. Ok, Im back. 7. Thanks for the support and well wishes. Pers they haven't done any scans or xrays. I am still thinking it's his back. The fact that it all settles down when he is snoozing but flares up immediately when he moves but here's the next bit....... My friend had to go the vet today back in Vic and she mentioned it to her vet who immediately said back/ pinched nerve and to try massaging his back. So I was just massaging his back along the spine just then for a little while, quite a bit of pressure, he was enjoying it. Anyways when I stopped and went away he followed, no immediate erection. So I let him follow me around a bit then checked again. While it didnt feel perfectly normal it technically was still soft and no where near as bad as it had been. So I took hin outside to wee and he did instantly whilst he was still soft and no penis visible, which he hasn't done since it all started, he has always hardened up immediately and his penis has come out of the sheath whilst trying to pee. He then walked a bit more, it started to harden again, especially the glands but his actual penis really does not appear to be hardening as much as it was. I maybe just tired but my OH thinks it's not as bad either. I don't know, could that be possible? I wonder if I should be taking him to a repro vet first. I guess I'll take him but express my concerns and maybe see if I can get some one to Check his back whilst I'm there in Brisbane if repro vet can't help. I'll see what he is like in the morning if he appears improved, I'll ring my vet and tell her I want someone to check his back first. Anyway I'm off to bed, I'm so tired and I'm starting to ramble.
  8. He's back home now, in good spirits, honestly you wouldnt think there was anything wrong the way he behaves is not like a dog who is "sick". Booked in for an appointment with specialist tomorrow at 12pm. Off to get ready for interview now.
  9. They rabg the specialists who were stumped aswell, great. They want him to see a reproductive specialist down in Brisbane. I asked if they were leaning away from the idea of him hurting his back and she said it could be but you would normally be able to tell and gave me examples of it happening with other animals, after suffering trauma. His prepuce is covering his penis which is good but she thinks the colour of it isnt very good, very red and mentioned that he might have a clot in the vein. Sighhhh... Good thing is he did a wee this afternoon. Im heading to pick him up, then I have a job interview at 5, like I feel like attending that.
  10. Ive just spoken to the vet, no change, she is trying to get hold of a specialist to see what the best course of action is because she thinks its getting pretty serious now ETA: Thanks Oakeydoak, I'll wait until the vet has spoken to the specialist and see what they think first. She is going to ring me back shortly.
  11. Hi Jetpoint GSP, Im only new to the area and this is my first visit to a vet since being here. I went with this vet as ?I had heard good things about them but I havent had the opportunity to build up a trusting relationship with them yet. Chase is my baby, Im very protective of him and very anxious and paranoid due to past experiences and cant help but think about the "what ifs". I just hate not knowing whats going on and it doesnt give me much confidence when it comes across that they dont really know either. They probably dont realise how stressed I am so maybe they think Im ok with it all and they dont need to reassure me he'll be fine, I dont know. All I can think about is the time I took my 16mth old dobermann in to the vets because he wasnt well. They didnt know what was wrong with him either at first but I expected to walk out with him. I didnt. So its probably not the vets fault Im just overly sensitive and want to know whats going on. Ill see what they say when they ring later.
  12. Thanks Tilly Im in Hervey Bay. I'll keep looking for somone closer but if it came down to it then I would travel that far but surely there has to be someone else closer. Thanks again. ETA: Oh thanks Monah. I sent you a PM earlier did you get it? Im not exactly sure what a physiotherapist does( all theses "therpaists" I get confused who does what, lol), do you think it would help Chase? Can I please have details, maybe I'll give them a ring
  13. I took him back to the vet this morning as he couldnt pee. So theyve put a catheter in and he is staying there for today. If he has pinched a nerve or something, can the vets actually fix that or should I just be telling them Im taking him to a myotherapist or something similar. They said they would give him something else to help his penis go down but if the issue is his back which they agree and think thats what it is, shouldnt they be doing something about that rather than just giving him more drugs?
  14. I have this post in Breeders (link below) and it has been suggested I should take my dog to a Myotherapist. I am leaning towards he has hurt his back and will express my concerns with the vet when she rings tomorrow but Im just wondering if anyone can suggest a good myotherapist in QLD, so after talking to the vet I can get onto it ASAP. I am 3.5 hours north of Brisbane, so the closer to me the better but more importantly they need to be good :0) http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/224218-penis-problems/

  16. Thanks Pers and Oakway Showdog, he is not licking it and there is no blood. When the sheath is pulled back and is very red but I assume thats because of it being swollen due to the increase in blood flow? Alhtough when the vet was handling it, she was surprised it didnt seem to be hurting him, so obviously to her it looked sore. Stolzseinrotts, that sounds promising, although the isnt any indication of his sback being out, he seems to be walking ok, even running. I took him outside to toilet earlier (he did a normal wee and a poo with no blood) and he trotted around the place and then tried to initiate a game with one of my girls, by pouncing doing 360s ad racing around, which I put a stop to because the vet said to keep him quiet. Its very odd because there is no other signs that anything may be wrong except for his penis. It did seem to "go down" earlier after coming from the vets and resting, not to normal, but his glands were no longer prominent, his penis was no longer hard but I could tell, still a little swollen inside the sheath. A few hours later when I woke him up to go out and its all flared up again. Ive just checked him in his crate and it is all soft again, but I bet if I wake him up and get him out, it will harden up. It appears to ease when he is resting. If he has hurt his back does this sound like something that would happen, soft when resting but flared up when moving. Im beginning to think this could be the issue. I was thinking back after reading Stolzseinrotts post to Saturday when I first noticed it and Im sure it was that day he took a flying leap at high speed off the back steps down on to our patio, Im beginning to think he has jarred his back, although wouldnt he be sore, especially when pressure is applied? What exactly does a myotherapist do? Massage/manipulation? And can anyone recommend someone in QLD. Im about 3.5 hours north of Brisbane.
  17. Well took him in to the vet. I think they are a little bit stumped. His temperature is fine, his prostate is fine, he didnt seem in pain when she gave it a good examine she went and got another vet (I assume more experienced) and at this stage I think they have put it down to being neurological, mentioning he may have done a disc etc except they pushed all the way down his spine and there was no reaction, he hasnt been walking funny or anything. I dont know m,uch about neurological issues but I would have thought there would be some sign that something wasnt right (other than a swollen doodle, lol). So they have put him on anti inflammantrys and anti biotics (because after checking the prostate there was a bit of blood in the faecal matter on her finger, tmi, sorry) and cold compresses every half hour. So at this stage its a wait and see if this works. Vet said she would ring me tomorrow as she thinks there should be some improvement with the medication he is on. If not they'll obviously have to look further into it
  18. Yes and no. When i nearly lost Chase as a pup I was soo paranoid. We weren't sure if it was a bee or choking that caused everything so he was barely allowed outside and I wouldn't give him anything he might choke on. I worried and panicked at everything and still do. I have relaxed a little about him being outside, however he is never left outside if I'm not home and when snakes are on the move again he'll be inside even more than he is already is. I freak out when he eats incase he chokes, I Panic if he is panting too much, drinking too much or isn't at the back door within seconds of calling his name and I'm super paranoid about toads bees ticks and snakes. I've spoiled him and wrapped in cotton wool which I know isn't the best for him but I am so scared I will lose him in fact I've almost convinced myself I will, especially after losing losing two dogs at 16 mths and 18mths in recent years. Chase was very nearly the third and I just couldn't bare it if it happened. Unfortunately as a result of it all I'm now super paranoid and super protective of him and I don't trust anyone to take care of him but myself. I'm sorry for your loss
  19. Ive made an appointment for tomorrow at 12pm. Oakeydoak, he hasnt been used at stud yet, but will be ;) Pers...no bitches around that I know of, only mine, and they came out of season in June.
  20. Yes very odd...I think I might take him in tomorrow. ETA: Thanks Sway, I did read that but the only one that sounds like him is this Priapism: Canine priapism refers to continuous canine penis erection. This dog penis problem is not natural and needs immediate vet intervention. It may be the result of spinal cord injury, which would require surgery. But if he had spinal injury, surely that would be obvious. He seems perfectly normal, amybe a little bit quieter but im not sure whether thats because he has just been lazing around inside all day. I just took him out for a wee and he can wee with no issues. He was quite "soft" when I woke him up to go out for a wee but by the time he got outside and had a sniff, he was hardening up again, especially the glands. Maybe something is irritating his penis sheath when he walks, causing the reaction of an erection. Does this sound likely?
  21. The last few days Chase's penis has been continually erect Previously his "lipstick" would stick out abit like any normal dogs does at any time, usually when he was sitting and relaxed and on occassion it would get hard. However just these past few days its constantly hard and/or sticking right out, even when walking. He doesnt seem bothered by it, no licking, no smell, no discharge that I have noticed etc. I really first noticed it Saturday night. I had just fed him and went to get the bowl and it was nearly all the way out and hard. I noticed it hard and sticking out often over the next day or two. Last night we went for a walk and even while he was walking it was sticking out a bit and still hard. He has just been asleep so I thought I would wake him up and see what it was doing now whilst he was relaxed and whist it wasnt out it was still hard inside his sheath. His glands are also hard when this happens. I was going to take him to pick the kids up from school like I sometimes do, but I changed my mind becasue it was very obviously swollen and hard This is not normal is it??? Would an infection cause this? Has anyone had an issue like this? He seems ok, Im about to take his temperature though. Ive only just come to the realisation that it might be something a bit more serious and not him just being a boy dog. ETA: Temp 37.6
  22. I have a pap that is not really a yapper. He only yaps when people arrive at our house and when the other dogs are runnning around and having fun, but he is usually inside anyway so he doesnt get squished, lol, so that doesnt happen very often. Then again, I will not tolerate yapping, so maybe my training had something to do with it. He is probably the exeption to the rule, I show my dogs and have walked past trolleys full of paps and they all go off, I couldnt stand having dogs that yapped all the time and at everything.
  23. Thanks guys! Frodos mum , I am very proud of my handsome spunk. He simply has the best nature too which just makes him even more lovable, such a sweet boy, I could just eat him up,lol.
  24. Hi Poodlesrule, Main st vets Woofen, my local vet also charged the same as Bundaberg and I have also heard of them being around the $200 mark in areas of melbourne. I am led to believe a vasectomy isnt a lot different to a castration, just a bit more fiddlier. I believe the vets that quoted me $1000 are more expensive in general and also push desexing, as they tried to with me. I think they quoted me that price so I would cave in and desex. I told them what I had previously been charged and asked why its so expensive and was told they use proper clamps from the hospital and some other lame excuse. Rightooo ;)
  25. I had 15 pups done last year in Bairnsdale Vic and was charged $170 per pup, which is a dsicounted rate I think. I needed to have one done on an older pup up here in QLD. I rang around all the vets in the area, from hervey bay, Maryborough, Childers and Bundaberg. Not many would do it but the ones that did I was quoted from $1000 (yes thats right, $1000!)from one vet in HB, approx $400 and $350 (i think one in Maryborough and one in childers) and $165 at Sugarland Vet Clinic in Bundaberg. I went to Bundaberg and had it done there, no issues But as I said most would not do it and the prices vary greatly. ETA: The pups I had done were between 7-8 weeks. As long as they weighed atleast a kilo which they did. And I have to say those pups bounced back so quick. There was none of this laying around feeling sorry for themselves like older dogs do. Got them home and they behaved like nothing had even happened.
