  1. Hi Pockets, I did read the pinned thread about that, , but its so hot here I was worried about putting him in a pillow case. Ive never had a litter in this kind of weather and have been stressing about whether they are too hot too cold etc. they were all crying the other day when I first noticed the little boy as being unwell so I immediately thought they were all getting sick, turns out after researching some threads here and someone having the same problem they were hot. So I'm a little paranoid to put him in a pillow case in case he gets too hot.
  2. I have an almost 2 week old pup that's a swimmer. At first I didn't know what was wrong with him as I have never had one before, I had him at the vets ASAP because I thought he was going down hill. All was good except he was lethargic and weak, and vet put him on anti biotics. It didn't make much sense as he still wanted to feed and when he was on his tummy ( which I now realise was all the time, I hadn't paid much attention to that) he looked like a squashed toad or flat pancake. When I explained my concerns to the vet he brushed me off and said he checked everything and all felt good. I knew something was not right though so researched and researched and it turns out he is a swimmer. I watched his behaviour and yes, while all the others are getting up on their legs his were out to the side and " paddling". He was always on his tummy and when I would put him on his side he would immediately roll back to his tummy. Anyway, I've been making sure he lies on his side and he has his own box with egg cartons, scrunched paper and a teddy, underneath the blanket so it's all uneven and he can't lie flat. I feel he has improved in 24 hours and when watching him he is bringing his front legs up underneath him to crawl forward now, still not up like the others but at least he is putting his legs in the right spot. My question is as I've been observing him, he now will lie on his tummy but tucks his front legs under him, is this ok or should I still not let him lie on his tummy at all and is it ok for him to drape himself over a teddy on his tummy? A couple of times I've noticed him on his side on his own but I'm thinking its still early days and to not relax yet as he still prefers to be on his tummy. Such a stressful time, not knowing what was wrong but so pleased it can be fixed since caught so early :)
  3. Dogmad, I think the Affenpinscher is called Iggy :)
  4. In other breeds it depends on the breed as to what colour I prefer it in. AS for my breed, they come in fawn, red and brindle. I dont have a preference really but if I had to choose I'd probably say red. My other fave breed is Dobermann and I prefer black dobes.
  5. Congrats Pav Lova!! How many do you have? Cant wait to see some piccies!! A couple of pics as promised of my new little ones, all born between 580 and 680 grams. This mating has been planned for years and is very special considering it was the last of the semen from this UK dog. He has produced some outstanding progeny that have had huge success in the showring overseas, so Im hoping for something really special, especially with this being a line breeding. Even more exciting is I have two of my babies heading to the UK! Better pics will come, just been using my phone at the moment :) All babies are doing well and Kijana is being such a good mumma. Her milk didnt come in straight away so I have been topping them up after a feed from her :)
  6. Just popping in to let everyone know we have 8 healthy babies! 5 boys and 3 girls born via c section. 2 brindle, 5 red and 1 fawn. Mum is well but doesn't seem to have enough milk as yet to fill them up so I'm topping up with a bottle afterwards and they are loving it! I'm very surprised she didn't have more than 8 but they were big babies all weighing between 580 and 680 grams. Will post pics when I get a chance ;)
  7. Havent been on here too much, between work, house work, getting ready for Christmas, getting ready for puppies and chemo treatment for one of my dogs I don't have much time to do much else, lol. Just thought I would pop in here quickly with a pick of the girl. Shes booked in for a caesar next Friday. Sometimes I think shes big, other times I think shes having just an average size litter. She seems to be carrying them lower than she did last time so its harder to guess how many are in there. Congrats to all the new arrivals, look forward to seeing them grow :)
  8. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll think about it some more, I still think I prefer the wood shavings idea. And no Dasha I cant. I have chosen the patio becasue that is the best place for them at my place. The patio is under cover so sheltered from the weather, also cooler in this heat and will also help stop toads getting in at night time. I will also have fans plugged in for cool air flow, which I cant do out in the yard on the grass. They will have plenty of time to play out on the grass when I am home and able to supervise. ETA: We also find snakes in our yard too regularly for my liking and whilst snakes might still come under the patio it is less likely as it is very open and busy with activity.
  9. I have an under cover patio out the back. The ground is concrete. I am going to fence off an area for the puppies (about 5m x3m) for when they are old enough to go outside and are not supervised. I dont know what to put on the ground for them though that will be easy to clean. Should I: Leave them on concrete but would then have to hose off multiple times a day, Put down saw dust, which might be a bit messier but it will absorb wee and maybe easier to pick up, Put down fake grass, but wont the wee just go straight through it and it might be hard to clean. Im leaning toward the saw dust but also not 100% sure if its safe to use with bubs. I welcome any more suggestions and to hear from people who may have tried these options and what they thought. Thanks :)
  10. My dogs caught a live bat one night, a big bugger too. I think it had been fighting with another and fell out of the tree. It died of course, but I had a major panic because Hendra was all over the news at the time. Vets didnt think it was anything to be too concerned about. Upshot is all dogs are fine. I think I'd rather they had a dead one than grab a live one though
  11. That's because she didn't have 14 last time LOL, yeah thanks for that! I thought she was having 14 last time, but she only had 11 big ones! I was looking forward to having an average litter of about 8 this time, not sure if thats going to happen though, lol. Good luck to everyone due before me, cant wait to hear of your newe arrivals :)
  12. Just thought I would post a pic of my girl, 30 days along.I dont remember her showing this early last time!
  13. Well I took my girl to the vet over in the next town and they wasted my time and money. They were bloody useless, didnt know what they doing, and basically admitted that and also told me it might be too early to tell and come back in a couple of weeks, lol. I was fuming! So today I headed down to the sunny coast to a vet who does know what they are doing and I am thrilled to announce my girl is pregnant!! I knew she was, Ive been confident since week one after her initial behaviour change and then all the other litle signs that appeared and even at just four weeks along she actually looks pregnant, with a little tummy, so I was beginning to think we might end up with a few since she is showing so early. The estimation on numbers given to me is 8-12!! I hope there is no more than that.8-10 would be better, lol.
  14. Well todays the day we have our ultrasound for confirmation!! I have been keeping myself busy and not paying too much attention to her pregnancy as the suspense is a killer, so it feels these last 4 weeks have gone really really quick. Im pretty sure she is pregnant so hoping the ultrasound confirms that. There is only one ultrasound machine in my area (despite having a few vet clinics around) and the vets that charge ridiculous prices have it, so Im going to the next town, where it is less than half the price of the other place. So I'll update after 4pm :)
  15. You must be on your phone??? :) The title says "South Gippsland, Korumburra" which is in Victoria. REally need a recommendation guys, please, its pretty urgent I think.
  16. I have some people that bought a puppy off me back in 2010 that are now having some issues with him. I have recommended a behaviourist (after a vet visit to establish theres nothing wrong medically)however I dont know of any personally or if there are any in that area or willing to travel. If anyone can recommend someone ASAP that would be great thank you :)
  17. I think the key words here are "in connection with". There is a connection between milk fever and pregnancy and birth. If she wasnt pregnant and didnt have pups she wouldnt have milk fever. As for paying for mastitis last year, I dont know the details or why they would pay for that unless it was a phantom pregnancy and she developed mastitis?? Edited for typos
  18. But it is related to you breeding her. If you hadnt bred her she wouldnt have milk fever. If I remember correctly in the policy book it says something about not covering breeding and issues that arise from breeding. I think thats fair enough, otherwise it would cost them a whole lot of money. I am a breeder too and it would be very nice to have coverage for breeding related problems but not one company will ocver it and I think thats understandable.
  19. Just thought I would update about chases implant. He had it put in at end of July 2011 at 14 months. I've recently had both of my girls in season. One he was a little bit interested in but not over the top ( bit frisky, sniffing/ licking her and doing the teeth chomping and did try to throw the leg over but she told him off), but that was about it. Was not interested in the other bitch at all. His testes are still small and soft. I went to have him collected today to see if he was producing anything, as I've had a few stud enquiries. I wasn't expecting he would be ready but needed to know for sure. Well the vet couldn't even get a collection. Very disappointing it has lasted longer than 12 months but as stated previously in this thread it was an emergency so had to be done. I'll update again when something changes. This thread is great because I've researched and there isn't alot of info out there, so hopefully it will help others considering the implant.
  20. It's been two weeks since my girl had insemination. I'm pretty confident she is pregnant. Just little signs that I've picked up on. I haven't been wrong yet, so let's hope I'm not wrong this time. only 2 more weeks until ultrasound! Congratulations to those that already have it confirmed!
  21. I have to laugh. Someone I know did a surgical ai with frozen semen and was told at the ultrasound by his vet maybe4-6 pups, he thought she was having a few more, maybe 8. Well today she had 14!! My vets have never really given me a number, usually just said "lots", lol.
  22. Bullmastiff litter hopefully due December 29 :D Inseminated yesterday wtih frozen semen, so only very early days yet, but Im very excited all the same!
  23. My dogs have just shown up with the first fleas of the season. The best product I've used is comfortis. Have used the spot ons but frontline stopped being effective and the others just don't seem as good as comfortis, so I stick with that. As for ticks they worry me. I'm in a tick area andwhilst they haven't really had a problem with ticks in town the vets have been getting pets from suburbia in with ticks, so I'm a bit worried now as I don't treat for ticks. Treating 6 dogs every two weeks is going to get mighty expensive ad I don't like the collars as my dogs chew eachother necks. Im researching guinea fowl as they are excellent for cleaning up ticks but I've heard they are super noisy, so don't want to upset neighbours. I'm in south east QLD too.
  24. I emailed my claim at the recommendation of the vet, who said they are known for "losing" claims, I then followed up with a phone call that afternoon to ensure that had recieved it, which they had. I also kept a copy of everything I sent them. Im about to send off anohter claim for further treatment so I'll see if what they say is true in that it shouldnt take as long.
