How Did You Choose Your Breed Or Breed ?
Kaffy Magee replied to jase293's topic in General Dog Discussion
LOL, winter woolies already, lol! Im still getting around in shorts and singlet tops! I must admit, it has been cooler this past week, but no need for winter woolies here! -
With my last litters (2 at the same time) I incorporated some premium quality kibble in to the puppies diet becasue I knew most would not stick with a completely raw diet and I would rather have some input into what sort of kibble they use, than have them rush out to the supermarket when it got too hard to feed raw and by Goodos or something equally crap. Having said that I did talk to them about the benefits of complete raw and provide all my puppy buyers with Dr Billinghursts book " The BARF Diet". I do know some of my puppy buyers have reverted to just dry food at the recommendation of their vet :)

How Did You Choose Your Breed Or Breed ?
Kaffy Magee replied to jase293's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hi Monah, I contacted a breeder in Vic who has some stunning dogs and also works with a couple of other breeders who has dogs I like. It wont be for a little while yet, probably not until my old girl leaves us likely in the next 12-24months and I also have plans on the horizon for a very exciting mating with Kalais. So no time line set in stone but Im looking at roughly 2 years With any luck we will have moved to a small acreage property by then, or atleast not far off it Would be iteresting to find out who the breeder in Maryborough is though, I'll ahve to do some research AS for agility, its not a serious thought, I think it might be something my daughter would like to try, so its a possibilty. Winter here wouldnt be too bad though, would it? I dont know how warm it gets here in winter yet, but I thought it would be milder? I love happy bouncy dogs, just not 24/7,lol. I would love to come and meet your dogs (and you of course, lol). All the troops have just headed home so I have my time back now, we'll have to organise something ;) -
How Did You Choose Your Breed Or Breed ?
Kaffy Magee replied to jase293's topic in General Dog Discussion
When we were researching what breed to get we had it narrowed down to Bullmastiff, Rhodesian Ridgeback and Newfoundland. The main criteria being we didnt want something too active. My OH didnt want a newf, thought they were too big and hairy, and we both preferred the look of the Bullmastiff over the Ridgey, so our decision was made and it was the best decision ever Ive wanted a smaller breed for some time now to show and Ive decided on a boston terrier. I wanted something small, easy care, not yappy, something my daughter can show too and maybe do agility with, and I love their physique. They are a big dog in a small dogs body and I do love my bracchy breeds I also have a passion for Dobermanns and have had a few in the past. I love love this breed and I am desperate to have another, however now is not the right time. I only want one as I feel I could only handle one dobermaniac at a time, lol, plus I have my bullies that need me too. I also love a few other breeds, Afghan, Malamutes, Samoyed, Newfs, Griffon, toy poodle all with too much grooming for me at the moment, Boxers, I would like one, one day although Im not sure I can handle the constant bounciness and I love kelpies for their intelligence but I have no time to train one to its full potential right now. I think getting a breed to suit you is so important. You shouldnt buy a dog because you love the look of it, you need to be honest with yourself and ask is it really suitable for me right now? It may not be suitable right now due to circumstances, but if you wait it could be suitable in the future. Or it may be unsuitable due to breed (temperament, activity levels etc) and that may never be suitable but you just have to do right by yourself and the dog and find a breed that you will gel with. It is so much more important than looks. -
I would not be letting a large dominant breed puppy sleep on the childs bed. He may not seem all that dominant now but just wait until he gets older and has been raised(unintentional or not) to think he owns the place. He needs to know his place now(and that is definitely not on the beds or furniture), by the time he starts to reach maturity, they will have issues. and Prevention is better than cure especially when the "trainer" is a 6 year old child. I can not stress enough how important it is for a bullmastiff to have boundaries and a strong pack leader.

Jacqui, this breed are great with children but I would never allow a child to raise a bullmastiff. A child by no means has the ability to show authority over a bullmastiff, they have no physical strength to control the dog or make the dog do as they ask, they have no verbal strength for the dog to obey commands and they do not have the mental strength to understand the way a bullmastiff thinks and they would have very littel consistency I think. A bullmastiff would walk all over a child, and what would the child do about it? Nothing because they cant and a bullmastiff knows that. It will only end in disaster. As a young puppy and we all know what young puppies can be like, hyped, unpredictable, minimal attention span , by the time it is 6 months old, it will weigh more than the child and will learn that unless something is enforced it does not need to obey and I as an adult know how hard it can be to get a bullmastiff to obey. Things could be different if the mother actually trained the dog and was the "pack leader" and the dog was taught well and to obey human commands but to put a child in charge of training such a breed is sheer stupidity. The mother needs to return the puppy otherwise this will only end in tears. Is the puppy a male or female?

5 Week Old Pups - What Type Of Handling Do You Do?
Kaffy Magee replied to Amadeus's topic in Breeders Community
Ever since they were babies I would make lots of loud noises and left the tv on up loud, but when they got about 5 weeks they went out in a run (20 5 week old Bullmastiffs indoors wasnt working too well, lol). Other than lots of handling etc I made lots of banging, I would go and bang on the side of the shed loudly and continuosly, get the lawn mower going, walk around in a huge mexican style hat and when we had big thunder storms I would leave them outside (in their run, which was quite open in parts, but they had shelter and kennels etc) to hear and see the heavy rain, thunder and lightning. -
Hi Starshollow, I have just moved from Bairnsdale to QLD and used to show at KCC park and (numerous other places) regularly. I tried to atleast once a fortnight and I have Bullmastiffs(and had dobes also) so was in group 6 too Shame you didnt get your boxer earlier we could have travelled together and I could have helped you out. Good luck with your first show. You do get used to the travelling and it doesnt seem to take that long once you do, its the early mornings that killed me,lol. Worst part ever!

At my vet back in Vic, they would take them in and do them, no do want this and that etc. When I took one to a vet up here to be done there was a whole form asking if I wanted bloods, fluids, extra pain relief plus numerous other things. I said no to all. I dont think it is neccessary, they are just trying to make more money. I did feel bad becasue Im sitting there going no, no, no, no when she is asking each question but Im sure they are going to give him what he needs to get the job done and for him to be comfortable. Bloody annoys me though. I didnt ask for bloods or anything I just wanted a desexing. One other vet I rang about an appointment for the desexing told me, we do a full work up when they come (its a requirement for new dogs), bloods etc. And I was like "no thanks". And went elsewhere. My dogs are healthy I dont need them to tell me that. If I think there is something wrong then I will get it checked out but I am not spending more money than I need to on Dogs that are healthy, just to be told they are fine, I now that. Bloody rip offs. Sorry to OP for taking it a bit off topic.

Which Breed Makes The Cutest Puppies?
Kaffy Magee replied to Henrietta's topic in General Dog Discussion
Basset Hound puppies are the cutest. I would never own a basset but damn they are cute babies. I also like frenchie and boston babies. Who am I kidding all puppies are cute, lol! -
Thanks for the info guys. DancinBCs I might look in to that especially since I cant have my prefix anywhere in the name. Phooey! Otherwise I wont worry about it. I dont want to lease the bitch and reg the litter solely in my name because I am not raising them and all enquiries will go through to my friend. It just doesnt sit right with me. I would be more comfortable if my prefix went in to joint names and I can forward people to my co breeder. In fact it all sounds like too much hassle, lol. So maybe I wont bother at all. Anyway thanks for the info, I thought I had seen dogs with names and "for prefix" on the end of it. maybe they were imports..... Cheers, KM

I offered a friend of mine a show puppy from my last litter on the condition that I get a a puppy back from her. The agreement is that I choose the stud dog for her first litter and I get to pick my choice of puppy. All breeding costs and raising of litter and any money made from the sale of the other pups is borne by my friend. My friend has her own prefix and it did cross my mind that I would like to have the puppy with my prefix but didnt think too much of it as i thought it would be too much hassle. I was discussing a name I had already chosen for the pup (keen i know, the future mum is only 10 mths old, lol) and wanted PREFIX xxxx xx xxxxx FOR (my)PREFIX at the end of it but its too long. My friend emailed me back and said she assumed I would want the litter in my name seeing as I was choosing the stud etc. I would prefer that but dont know if thats a done thing, considering Im not raising the litter. Can my prefix be put in partnership temporarily for the raising of the litter? Has anyone done this before and what was your experience? I guess its not a big deal if it doesnt have my prefix on it, it would be nice, but not the end of the world.

I think they should be no different to the entire dogs entered, except they have been neutered. 1. Do you think it is a fun thing for the pet or a serious title for a good specimen of the breed? I think it could be both. It can be fun, providing the dog is a quality specimen. For pet people they would probably consider it a serious title. Me personally I wouldnt bother showing a dog to its neuter champion, but have no issues with those that do/would. 2. Do you think the dog should be in peak condition or just an oldie who you think likes to show? Peak condition no matter what age. Oldies are fine, providing they are in good enough condition to compete. 3. Will you be upset if you come up against Champions or Grand Champions? No I wouldnt but Im not sure why a Champion or more so a grand champion would bother to go for a neuter title.

For Those Who Work And Raise Puppies
Kaffy Magee replied to Wyntervale's topic in Breeders Community
I would take atleast four weeks off for my litters. When I had the two litters last year I was working in the evening. I took 1-2 weeks off then only did 2 shifts a week until they were old enough to leave. My OH was home in the evening s to do the evening feeds, so that worked out perfectly but with a 9-5 day job I would take minimum 4 weeks off. Bullmastiff mums arent left with their puppies unsupervised incase of squashing so we need to be there to put mum in with pups every couple of hours to feed, and that includes during the night. Sometimes I wish I had a breed that I could leave and not worry about coming home to squashed puppies. Bullmastiffs arent easy, therefore, I dont breed very often, lol. -
Can anyone tell me when the schedule for the royal comes out? Im heading over to Vic for the Bullamstiff Nationals and was thinking of doing the Royal as well. I need to start planning things soon so hope its not too far away.

Pooping On Patio!
Kaffy Magee replied to krystle_chino_tira's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Mine will go on the patio if its raining or been raining. My girls have also peed where they have just eaten and then of course when one does it the others try to go over the top, but I ususally catch them out before they all go. Bloody frustrating. I think I'll have to start feeding on the grass. -
I just entered a show here in QLD for the first time using OzEntries. So EASY! And costs less, and less stuffing around, with envelopes, stamps, money orders and trying to get to Post Offices on time! I'll be doing it this way from now on! Hopefully all other clubs can get on the bandwagon and use OzEntreis too.

Im having the same problem although my dogs arent that bad. The neighbours three little dogs, can see through our fence so whenever my dogs leave my patio and go out on the grass their dogs start going nuts. Of course mine then rush over, most of the time they will just stand there and watch the yappers go off, but sometimes mine also start to run the fence and bark back, which then fires up the little yappers even more, and countless times Ive thought one of them was getting mauled cos they make such a racket screaming. If I open the door and call mine they come and it all stops, but 9 times out of 10 mine arent making any noise, just watching through the fence. It annoys me I have to be the one to call my dogs back all the time when they didnt start it and most of the time they dont make a noise. Anyway, in the mean time I put a bark collar on one of my girls, who seems to fire up the easiest and once she barks back, my others follow. It seems to have curbed the barking, but she will then fence run without the noise, which still stirs the little ones up. So Im going to try and cover the fence gaps when I get the money and hopefully that will stop the problem. My dogs are not interested in the other dogs at all until they rush to the fence yapping and Im sure they start yapping because they can see my dogs. Covering it up hopefully fixes that problem

I worry about my 10 month old boy, Chase. I have waited for so long to have a male bullmastiff, and a stunning one at that! I have lost 3 young dogs close to my heart in a short space of time in the last 4 years(18mth old to snake, 16mth old to cancer and a 12 week old to a terrible accident) and then I nearly lost Chase late last year( anaphylaxis or choking, not %100 sure, resulting in pneumonia) which has only made me worse. Im convinced I will lose him and so I am super paranoid and extra careful with him. I have a really strong bond with him now and dont think I could handle losing him. After not knowing whether it was anaphylactic to a bee sting Ive only just started letting him stay out side unsupervised for any length of time. I wont leave him outside if Im not home, and he comes inside as soon as it gets dark, so I can keep an eye on him. I dont worry so much about other things, just that I might lose him.

Ihave just moved from acreage to suburbia. Prior to moving my dogs were kept in runs when we went out. I hope to have a couple of runs set up very soon at my ne house but dont at this stage. my older girls are out during the day, as they are really sedate and just lay under the back patio sleeping all day. When my runs are built and snake proofed they will be put in there when we go out. They sleep indoors at night. My young male is 9 months old and he is inside(in a crate, otherwise he would be into everything) whenever we are not home and also sleeps inside of a night. He nearly died back in November and I am extremely paranoid I will lose him one day, I just have a strong feeling I will and so I am extra careful with him. We have been told we get alot of snakes in our yard too which is an extra worry.

I raise my puppies on a natural diet. Unfortunately a number of my puppy people have switched to dry food only at the recommendation of their vet. Despite me telling them alot of vets will try and push dry food onto them, they still went and did it. Very disappointing and frustrating.
