Frozen Semen Who Has Had Success & Using Who?
Kaffy Magee replied to Possumeyes's topic in Breeders Community
I also used Phil for my last litter with semen that was not very good so we used all we had. We got 8 pups. If the mating is super important as it was for me ( the only remaining semen left in the world from this dog) I was happy to pay whatever to whoever was the best to increase my chance of pups. And Phil was the best according to everyone I spoke to. He was excellent to deal with and I loved that he explains everything fully and so you understand it all too. -
They're in Hobart, but I'm sure they would travel for the right vet. Having said that I have no idea how big Tassie really is lol.

I sold a Bullmastiff puppy to a home in Tassie. A few months back they contacted me and told me their vet had told them he had hip dysplasia. He was only about 12 mths. Vets do this all the time so I told them not to panic. Vet reckoned he could tell from looking at him but they did take X-rays and decided from those he did. I told her again not to panic and to send them off to Lavelle for scoring. She did and they came back a 12, which is great! The breed average is 22.6. So everything is all well until I receive a call two nights ago saying their vet wants to do a total hip replacement. Now they have sent me a video of him walking and there is something going on with his left hind but myself and those I've shown it to don't believe it's a hip issue, it looks more in the hock. No other diagnostics have been undertaken, no other X-rays of spine, or further down the leg, no visit to a chiropractor, nothing, so I'm not happy the vet has decided a total hip replacement is neccessary considering nothing else has been ruled out and his scores were good. So my question is, is there somewhere highly recommended in Tassie I can send them for a second opinion. Cheers, KM

Hi everyone, sorry I haven't been back before now. I took him to the vet who referred me to a specialist. The specialist was thinking it may be infraspinatus tendon contracture or the bicep tendon. She couldnt do any diagnostics on the day but is pushing for an mri at about $2000 or athroscopy at $3500-$4000. I simply dont have that money at the moment. She said there were other things we could do but they might not show anything and then Id have to do the more expensive anyway. I asked about ultrasound but apparently the person that does it at the clinic has not done enough in that area to be confident enough to do it. Apparently its a very tricky area and hard to get around it, so the specialist is really pushing for the MRI. The good news is she doesn't think hes in pain so suggested I wait and save up the money. Not sure what to do, whether its worth finding someone who is experienced enough to do the ultrasound or if Id just be wasting my money, which I dont really have to begin with lol. Has anyone had any experience with something like this before?

My young Bullmastiff boy has been lame for quite some time, front left. I have crate rested initially when I had time off work and it improved but then got worse again. I had his hips and elbows xrayed and asked them to check his shoulder as well, all clear, but the vet said when he was under and on his back his shoulder dropped considerably compared to the other one, which indicated it may be a torn muscle. He suggested more resting but to take him back if it doesnt improve. Admittedly, he has only been penned, either outside or inside with me, so he is not running around and playing with the other dogs, however I have not crated him (except over night). I hate doing it, especially while Im at work all day and to make it worse I have no air con inside. But Im resigned to the fact that Im going to have to. I have the Bullmastiff Specialty coming up in May ( which I understand he may not have recovered fully by then) and also the Nationals in June, which of course Id like to show him at. Is there anything I can give him to aid in muscle recovery whilst he is crated and would taking him to a physio or bowen therapist be beneficial at this stage? If so, can anyone recommend one in QLD. Cheers,KM

For Those That Have Used The Suprelorin Implant
Kaffy Magee replied to OSoSwift's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Well Chases testes semi to be firmer, but not bigger. And tonight he actually mounted my girl who is in season, only early in, but it was very out of the ordinary for him so It sounds like it's finally starting to wear off. I've noticed he is a bit more testy to, not as chilled as he normally is. Fingers crossed his medical problem does not return! It's been almost 2.5 years since it was put in. -

I have Bullmastiffs, I believe my dogs would bark but they are not approach type of dogs. They would bark, keeping their distance but circling, basically trying to keep the person back, but without forcing the issue. I believe they would all be the same if alone except for maybe my old girl, she mightnt be so forceful. My dogs do the same thing if I am home unless Im there with them (as in greet the person coming in) and then they relax a little but are still a bit wary except for Chase, who thinks since im there they must be ok, so he'll volunteer himself for pats. If it was night time or something or the person appeared dodgy then they wouldnt be ok with it, they'd be going off. If someone got physically confrontational I think my dogs would be more forceful with their behavior and possibly "rush" the person, growling and snarling, trying to force them away. I dont think they would bite but you never know, they are not the sort of breed to bite now ask questions later, I think it would take a lot for a Bullmastiff to bite, they would rather use otherways to defend first before resorting to biting.

Im another who has had problems with check chains. One being a GSD years ago before I knew better, he was on the veranda and it dangled down between the boards and he got stuck there. Thankfully I found him and he was ok. Second problem, I was a at a dog show with my two pups, whislt also handling for someone else. After my pups had been in it was a rush to get them i their crate so I can handle another dog. Chucked them both in th crate together with chains still on. In the ring with the other dog and all hell broke loose, with dogs screaming and so forth. Sure enough they had been playing and one had the chain wrapped around her lower jaw and was stuck. I couldnt get them apart as they were panicking and pulling which pulled the chain tighter. Thankfully they came apart at some point. Have never left dogs with chains on ever again, not even for a quick minute at a show.

My beautiful girl Kalais is gone. On Wednesday she was ok, but I knew she didnt have long, I initially thought maybe a week, but then realised probably not even that long and I didnt want her to get to the point she was in pain. I had an appointment for 11.20 this morning but she went down hill so fast overnight I couldn't let her go another minute and so she was given her wings at 8 this morning. Last night we went to the beach for a short stroll, she had a warm hydrobath, then went to say goodbye to the kids where she rolled around on her back and wagged her tail, she had double beef and bacon burger, a cheeseburger, and some fries topped off with a choc sundae for dessert, which all went down a treat with great gusto, I could never imagine her going off her food, I think she lived for her food. The laboured breathing is so much more noticeable at night, and she alternated from my bed to the floor. But this morning it was obvious she was uncomfortable and in pain, she wouldn't/ couldn't get on the bed and when I offered her a bowl of milk she didn't touch it, something I thought I would never see. I forgot about the fact I was going to lose her forever and it became a race to end her pain because I couldn't bear to see her like that. It was hard getting her down the stairs to the car, she struggled, which is crazy considering she ran up them the night before and I could not get her to climb on to the back seat of the car, something she has always done with much enthusiasm. I held her as she slipped away. No longer in pain my darling girl, thank you for the years you have given me as a companion, as a family dog, as a show dog. You were my " good girl", never set a foot wrong, always did as I asked straight up, I never had to use " that voice" with you. You were gentle and sweet, never had a bad word to say to any person or any other dog. You always gave me everything you had in the show ring, you just wanted to please me. You made me so proud. I showed the other weekend after long break and missed having you on the end of the lead. After your diagnosis back in August my world came crashing down, why would this happen to you? I did my best in giving you every chance to fight it and sadly it did not give us the time I was hoping for but thank you, for enduring the weekly poking and prodding, if it was hard on you, you never let on, my strong beautiful girl, you would come bounding out like you'd just been visiting for the day. Thank you for the beautiful memories and Im sorry things have been in so much chaos in recent months and that our time together was not quite as stress free as I would have hoped.Rest easy my beautiful Lay Lay, my good girl. I love you with all my heart xxx http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/profile.asp?dog=27619

I roughly spend about $200 a month on food for 4 adult Bullmastiffs. I fee mainly chicken frames, whole and minced as their meat/bone source as its cheaper. They get lamb or roo on the odd occasion, plus chicken wings, necks, maryland and the odd marrow bone. They would get Maroow bones more often except they try and charge $8 a bone where I am . They also get Vets All Natural, veges, egg, sardines, yoghurt occasionally and have recently started using Black Hawk Dry as well for convenience purposes. It doesnt matter how I try and work it out I can never get it cheaper than $200 without losing the quality of the diet.

Funny Things You Have Heard About Your Breed...
Kaffy Magee replied to SwaY's topic in General Dog Discussion
That only Bullmastiffs that have a diamond shape patch of white fur on their chest are actually purebred. Thats the only way to tell that they are pure apparently *nods* ( and for those playing at home a small patch of white hair on the chest of the Bullmastiff is permissible but not desirable). -

I'm another that loves my booster bath from deals direct. I bought it for my Bullmastiffs and like it better than the hydro bath I used to have because I have better access to the dogs whole body and don't have to bend at all. Well worth the money!
