  1. Thank you. I will check out the book. We have done some training at home re:grooming and touching. Is is going to be tough getting a new person in her personal space even with situational medication but we have to work something out. I will definitely get that book. Thank you
  2. Thank you Papillon Kisses. This is very helpful and a good place for me to start.
  3. Hello I live in the inner city of Melbourne and I have a very reactive anxious standard poodle. We have done extensive reactivity training, ver behaviourists, medication etc but she doesn’t like people touching her that are not very familiar to her. We have had the same groomer every six weeks (except for lockdowns of course) since she was 10 weeks old. She has to go away next year for 6 months. I called many local people but no one can help us. My dog doesn’t even like me brushing her and I can’t even cut my own fringe straight. I am not sure what to do because my dog takes a long time to get used to people. We use medicating for grooming even with our regular groomer. Does anyone know someone who could groom a reactive poodle? Thanks so much. I would love some help or advice. She was is a well loved and very carefully socialised dog. We are not sure why she is like this.
  4. Also friends of ours who liked the cavalier but wanted a small non shedding family dog chose a Havanese , they are very happy with this choice.
  5. Hello i just happened to see this post and thought I might comment. I am not an expert but I have had three cavaliers and currently own a cavalier and a standard poodle. As mentioned above the cavalier has a soft nature and requires less stimulation than my poodle. He sheds a lot but it can be reduced by regular brushing. He is very loving to everyone. I keep my poodle in a simple short cut and the grooming requirements are greatly reduced but I get her groomed every six weeks. My standard poodle is highly intelligent and needs regular exercise and likes to learn new tricks. We attend regular training. Despite coming from a great breeder and careful socialisation she is a reactive/anxious dog and I have invested a lot of time and money into her, however I think this is not usual of the standard poodle as I have met many and they have been more stable than mine. I would want to know the temperaments of both parents before purchasing another one. Despite this I would get another poodle as I love their personalities and the lack of dog hair on my clothes and furniture. Good luck with your search.
  6. Thank you. This is a great start. I will follow up with some of these options and see how we go.
  7. Hi there. thank you for a such a quick response. I am in Brunswick in Melbourne. I don’t mind travelling a bit for some help. I have a list of positive trainers but I am not sure where to start. I have read a lot about fearful dogs and I understand the ideas but I think having someone assess us again would be helpful. Thanks again.
  8. Hello i am not sure many people come here anymore. I hope everyone is making progress with their dogs. I have a slightly reactive/shy standard poodle. On advice from a trainer we have used LAT with some success so she usually inside other dogs and people when walking but it’s hard to get her used to new people as we don’t have many coming into our house to practice with. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good trainer who could help us take the next step forward please. Thank you for any help.
  9. When my daughter was 11 we looked into rough collies too as she really wanted a dog. We went to a collie fun show and people were very approachable and helpful. In many ways the breed would have been a good fit but I was a tiny bit allergic to the hair and and so we went for a standard poodle which was probably too high energy for her but she still loves her a lot. Despite her commitment, as I predicted her interests moved on in high school to friends and other activities so I take the dog to training and walk her most days. It sounds like you are prepared for this and also your daughter may stay completely obsessed with dogs. Good luck, from what I learnt you can get calmer rough collies and some people near the park I go to have a lovely rough collie.
  10. Hi i think it's syringomyelia in dogs a place for help and advice.
  11. I was concerned about my cavalier displaying symptoms and found a Facebook page for people with dogs with this condition. It was helpful and you can get advice from other people.
  12. Thank you for this idea. I will speak to the vet nurses when we pop in for our "getting better at the vet" session. I probably sound over protective to most but I don't want her to go completely backwards after all the hard work.
  13. Thank you. I will have to do some calling around I think. You are so right I need someone who understand anxious dogs. She is not that easy to manage so it needs to be the right person. I shall start with Delta. Thank you for the advice.
  14. It's good to see that everyone's dogs are doing well and the new puppy is gorgeous. I am not sure people visit this forum very much but I tried a google search and didn't get very far. I was just wondering if anyone can recommend a boarding/holiday place for my poodle who is anxious around new people? I don't think she would cope in a kennel environment at all. We have made a lot of gains but she is a nervous dog and I don't think that's going to change. We try to take her on holidays but we would like to visit a dear friend in NZ at some point. If I got a sitter they would have to be very dog savy so not to push her into situations she cannot cope with. Ahhh it's a bit hard. I would welcome any suggestions or what other people do. Thank you so much.
  15. Actually we went with a standard poodle. We love her.
  16. I accidentally posted in the wrong thread but just wanted to say that we were looking into low shedding dogs too, not much in the medium size group. If you are prepared to go smaller there is more choice such as Havanese or Bichon. My friends have one of each and they are both good with their young kids. We got a poodle but I was interested in obedience. She needs a good daily walk and training. Would a whippet be low shedding? Just a though as they medium sized.
  17. Whoops sorry wrong thread. Not sure how to move it into the other one. Sorry
  18. When we were searching for a breed I found that there were very few low sheeding dogs in medium size. If you were prepared to go smaller you have more choice such as the bichon or a Havanese. I have friends with both of these dogs. The Havanese is very cute and playful. We chose a poodle and she requires a good walk every day and ongoing training. Good luck in your search.
  19. Our friends got a Havanese when their kids were about 5 and 7 and he is a great dog but requires regular clipping. We got a cavalier when my kids were small which was perfect for them, very gentle and adaptive.
  20. Hi i don't know anything about curly coated retrievers but we have a standard poodle as a family pet and love her. She requires a daily walk/play and we do obedience each week. She needed a lot of stimulation particularly in her first year. She is very intelligent and affectionate. We have had a few issues with leash reactivity which I think is unusual for the breed (not unusual in general), as I know other people with standard poodles who haven't had these issues. We have her clipped every six weeks in a short manageable clip and it's easy to maintain. She is great with my kids. Good luck in your search.
  21. Would a smooth griffon be too small? I also though of a smooth collie but they might be too active.
  22. Hi I have a cavalier and find the coat gets full of grass seeds and sticks etc from the park. My friend also has a cav that spends a lot of time on a small farm and they have to get her clipped to avoid grass seeds etc... I wouldn't call it ideal for a farm environment.
  23. We have a standard poodle from Giday poodles in Victoria. Linda has breed some beautiful dogs and is worth talking to. You can also get a list of breeders from the Poodle Club in your state. My children were 7, 11 and 13 when we got her. She has fittted in well, very high energy in the first year but has calmed down a lot. We do obedience every week.
  24. Thank you. I will look into a behaviourist. Yes you are very right Verve about them being super smart. She notices everything.
  25. Thanks again for your replies. Yes it is hard to explain without seeing it unfortunately. We generally walk around the local busy streets on the footpaths. We live inner city and she has been exposed to lots of noise, people, bikes etc.. Nearly everyday we also drive to the fenced park and she plays fetch or runs around. We walk about 45min at a time. We haven't changed our routes. I don't always go with our cavalier as I find it hard walking a sometimes reactive dog with another dog but if my teenage daughter comes we walk both together.
