Thank you. I will check out the book. We have done some training at home re:grooming and touching. Is is going to be tough getting a new person in her personal space even with situational medication but we have to work something out. I will definitely get that book. Thank you

Hello I live in the inner city of Melbourne and I have a very reactive anxious standard poodle. We have done extensive reactivity training, ver behaviourists, medication etc but she doesn’t like people touching her that are not very familiar to her. We have had the same groomer every six weeks (except for lockdowns of course) since she was 10 weeks old. She has to go away next year for 6 months. I called many local people but no one can help us. My dog doesn’t even like me brushing her and I can’t even cut my own fringe straight. I am not sure what to do because my dog takes a long time to get used to people. We use medicating for grooming even with our regular groomer. Does anyone know someone who could groom a reactive poodle? Thanks so much. I would love some help or advice. She was is a well loved and very carefully socialised dog. We are not sure why she is like this.

Also friends of ours who liked the cavalier but wanted a small non shedding family dog chose a Havanese , they are very happy with this choice.

Hello i just happened to see this post and thought I might comment. I am not an expert but I have had three cavaliers and currently own a cavalier and a standard poodle. As mentioned above the cavalier has a soft nature and requires less stimulation than my poodle. He sheds a lot but it can be reduced by regular brushing. He is very loving to everyone. I keep my poodle in a simple short cut and the grooming requirements are greatly reduced but I get her groomed every six weeks. My standard poodle is highly intelligent and needs regular exercise and likes to learn new tricks. We attend regular training. Despite coming from a great breeder and careful socialisation she is a reactive/anxious dog and I have invested a lot of time and money into her, however I think this is not usual of the standard poodle as I have met many and they have been more stable than mine. I would want to know the temperaments of both parents before purchasing another one. Despite this I would get another poodle as I love their personalities and the lack of dog hair on my clothes and furniture. Good luck with your search.

I have read a lot about fearful dogs and I understand the ideas but I think having someone assess us again would be helpful. Thanks again.

Hello i am not sure many people come here anymore. I hope everyone is making progress with their dogs. I have a slightly reactive/shy standard poodle. On advice from a trainer we have used LAT with some success so she usually inside other dogs and people when walking but it’s hard to get her used to new people as we don’t have many coming into our house to practice with. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good trainer who could help us take the next step forward please. Thank you for any help.

When my daughter was 11 we looked into rough collies too as she really wanted a dog. We went to a collie fun show and people were very approachable and helpful. In many ways the breed would have been a good fit but I was a tiny bit allergic to the hair and and so we went for a standard poodle which was probably too high energy for her but she still loves her a lot. Despite her commitment, as I predicted her interests moved on in high school to friends and other activities so I take the dog to training and walk her most days. It sounds like you are prepared for this and also your daughter may stay completely obsessed with dogs. Good luck, from what I learnt you can get calmer rough collies and some people near the park I go to have a lovely rough collie.

Thank you for this idea. I will speak to the vet nurses when we pop in for our "getting better at the vet" session. I probably sound over protective to most but I don't want her to go completely backwards after all the hard work.

It's good to see that everyone's dogs are doing well and the new puppy is gorgeous. I am not sure people visit this forum very much but I tried a google search and didn't get very far. I was just wondering if anyone can recommend a boarding/holiday place for my poodle who is anxious around new people? I don't think she would cope in a kennel environment at all. We have made a lot of gains but she is a nervous dog and I don't think that's going to change. We try to take her on holidays but we would like to visit a dear friend in NZ at some point. If I got a sitter they would have to be very dog savy so not to push her into situations she cannot cope with. Ahhh it's a bit hard. I would welcome any suggestions or what other people do. Actually we went with a standard poodle. We love her.
