great thats all Ive written exactly what I do and have done for years walk past be it with a various dogs over the years. I don"t even know what breed of dogs they are .To me they are just med size plain brown dogs .The first time I met their owner was to ask where they bought this awesome waterproof stunning collar their dog was wearing . The house is set back from the road with a scrap car yard behind them .The dogs don"t even bark .Im not sure wether my statement will help I guess the dog assessment will be his biggest thing . :D

I"ll be the first to raise my hand and bow down to the great work rescuers do. Randomly today not sure exactly why I checked out the rescue directory list (just in nsw) on pet rescue .Over the years Ive heard names and so knew of some of them but I never realised just how many there are now. Do you think people see that as a good sign their dog/cat will be rescued so aren"t AS worried about surrending him/her or feel less guilt when taking them to the pound? Baring in mind these people have limited idea how whats really involved being a rescue group but simply see it as ----THERES ENOUGH OF THEM (rescue groups) OUT THERE

Ive lived in my street for almost 10 years. For the past 4 years or so Ive walked past the same 2 dogs at least 4 times a day (on a school day) Ive walked past walking 4 dogs the foxies barking at the two bigger dogs and NOT once have these two dogs barked back tried to tear through the gate or made me feel threatened in any way . As a foster carer Ive walked all sorts of dogs past these two dogs and NOT once has there been any sort of reaction. Ive been warned from strangers telling me there are big dogs who live down there and I should be careful -----( Its light industrial where I am so at times theres workers etc ) Today their owner told me one of the dogs has been slapped with a dangerous dog order as council told the owner she jumped the fence and attacked someones dog .He has 7 days to contest the order so has a dog behourist coming to access his dog today . He asked me if I would write a statement . His neighbour who does pet boarding is also writing a statement I said yes. .OF COURSE my statement only states what I KNOW and what Ive seen over the years But now Im worried about any backlash from the person who went to council in the first place I NEVER saw the attack and my statement contains only what extends to me and what Ive seen over the years of walking past . While I understand any dog can do anything I stuck to what I do know and have seen . Has anyone else been in this situation ? Im not worried about my statement as its all true and Im not worried about the dog as its never posed any threat to me my kids or my dogs in fact Ive never seen it out of the yard other than on a lead being walked by its owner BUT IF it is true I do also feel for the owner of the other dog and the lenghts he/she may go to to fight for their dog ---Does that make sense ?

Rescue Notes Are They Copyrighted
animal ark 22 replied to animal ark 22's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
Exactly Ive noticed one group use the pound photo on pet rescue for a long time and nots are used on their FB page They have done it for a very long time and are heavy uses of kennels which dare I say gets me rather upset .It can take some time to get to know a pound dog out of the pound enviroment and longer if they are solely in kennels .I OFTEN thought ""well the dog is in care why keep using their pound photo?"" In this case I don"t think being busy is any form of excuse as SURELY they would be spending time with the dog so a photo op would be part and parcel --To me anyway .... For any link Ive ever used to promote awareness for a dog I always add that I have never personally met the dog and to always check for themselves . Thankyou for the help I know now I can use the notes/photos if needed and I will always highlight your suggestions :D -
I often browse through the urgent list and while it varies some of the photos and notes are so well done. :D Are they copyrighted? Ive noticed they are used by rescue group on both their pet rescue account and facebook page . EVEN though it wasn"t them who did the profile but they had the dog released and its now in their care......For me while it may have been ok at first I would have thought whoever then has the dog they would have to make their own notes and photos ? Ive often seen a dog I felt I would like to promote but wasn"t sure if I could using their notes posted here provide a link to the pound or write my own plug ? I guess the obvious answer would be to contact them directly but just in case someone else was unsure I thought Id ask openly ..... :)

jUST WONDERING DO YOU HAVE A blacklist? (SO TO SPEAK) And if so do you share it amongest yourselves? I kept some names over the years

To be honest Ive never kept a list of costs incurred as a foster carer .Toys here new collars there a bag of chicken wings every pay day .I know its all add up but most of us don"t normally think twice and spending a little here and there never seemed to matter. Ive heard and read here some of the bills rescue groups have had enough to have you eating 2 minute noodles for a week ( I mean that in a nice way :) ) Ive also seen alot of new groups pop up some stay some go . For anyone thinking of starting what would you say they would be looking at cost wise ? just for the start up without even a first visit to the vet . Assuming you even had a good rate vet you could judge the vet bill but sometimes things don"t go straight forward so you would need I suspect a kitty for those unexpected costs . Im not asking for exact $$$$$ but I thought maybe if some people had an idea they may do some extra homework. Honestly Im old school so wouldn"t rely on donations IF I were a rescuer I think I would ask if I really needed to and accept any given but I wouldn"t ask for EVERYTHING so I bet Id be heavily in debt :D I also gather it would vary depending on if you took a certain breed/age puppies would need heaps by way of extra vaccinations worming etc and I guess on the flip side the older dogs may need extra dental or tests So while I know you can"t give exact figures I was thinking your experience may help any even your budgeting tips may help those already involved Either way I thought it could be an interesting subject and could even be a real eye opener to those not involved Edited to add while I would love to be involved there would be no way emotionally nor money wise could I ever do what you rescuers do so Im just a carer

Or, You Know, Pet Rescue ...
animal ark 22 replied to Aphra's topic in Dog Rescue (General Rescue Discussion)
I don"t support puppy farms and promote pound dogs and rescue whenever I can BUT I also understand people want a pure bred .There could be many reasons anything from knowing the size they will become to their gentics to temp and I don"t see anything wrong with someone going to a breeder . I guess its their choice of breeder that is the question. I looked at that facebook attachment posted here and it really did play on my mind owning a pound dog myself I know its not all roses but those photos really were aimed to hit you. I don"t think by someone going to a breeder simply means a shelter dog will die thats a bold and broad statement .While there are many dogs in pounds it doesn"t mean they are suitable for that one family looking on that day or even week . I don"t know much about the whole OL thing I do know its taken off and become huge .In many ways I feel sorry for the decent rego breeders out there because to me it always comes across by these groups that you too are no better than the puppy farms .So I guess to someone who didn"t know or didn"t look into it you also get a bad wrap . People are always afraid of what they don"t fully understand and of course there will always be those who jump on any band wagon, Im still learning and reading up on things and looking into how things work .I never went in for the whole OL thing because I didn"t understand what it was really all about at first I thought it was just about puppy farms but then it got all twisted and he said she said .Honestly it made me feel if I didn"t agree with it then I didn"t care but thats not true I do care but somewhere in it all I got lost -
Large Lump On Side Of Neck

I am not sure why anyone would have antibiotic supplies to use off their own bat, but please do not use prescription medication on any dog without veterinary advice. This is coming from someone who is currently trying to manage a dog with a severe drug induced skin disease caused by prescribed cephalosporin. Antibiotics should never be given without careful consideration and testing for sensitivities. It's a concern that vets often hand them out just in case, and even more of a concern that members of the general public have their own supplies to use whenever they THINK they are needed and without vet advice. In rescue you have them because exactly as KelpieCuddles said, animals die or drug regimens change. You learn not to throw things out, keep them until they expire, if a future dog is prescribed them at a consult it can reduce the extra amount dispensed. I've never had a vet tell me to muck around with meds at home. & I've never had a vet give me excess to requirements, in rescue that's just a waste of money. It is stupid and irresponsible to diagnose when you're not qualified, but having spare meds is part and parcel of foster care. OP simply stated she would see the vet and already had antibiotics. Not that she intended to google-diagnose and google-medicate. THANKYOU powerlegs here is an exampple ---I had a dog who vet suggested he be sedated after desexing to help him as he was big powerful and wouldn"t stay still for more than 5 minutes They gave me a script 12 x Acp 25mg tablets x 500 instructions were Give 1/2 to 1 tablet twice daily as Necessary to sedate will last 2-4 hours WELL I only used 1 tablet now I have 11 left over still in script bag with complete instructions and the date etc ..It is quite easy to have something left over AND as I said I was taking a list of what I had with me to the vet IF I had the right tablets then I wouldn"t need to double up or as you said F in rescue thats just a waste of money .........BUT do you know what has me so upset? I wrote an honest thing about a problem with my dog I wrote it here asking for help from people I thought would maybe able to give me advice instead Its been taken away from what I was seeking and turned into something completely different I don"t think that was very helpful nor fair .would you rather me lie give you half the story or not even bother turning to people I thought were here as part of a dog community .I don"t know anyone from a bar of soap I wasn"t expecting to be grilled I was simply concerned about my dog before I took him to the vet . BY the way the lump went down over night -

After treating an injury my dog had then calling the after hours vet I had explained what I done over the phone The vet then quoted I had done everything right and exactly what they would have done ...Which made me feel proud of myself some on that day I was far from the title but felt like a vet :D -

How come you have plenty of antibiotics? and how do you know you have the right one to treat the offending bug IF it is an infection? Having said that, it sounds like a haematoma and will probably reabsorb given time. Still needs a vet assessment though Im a foster carer so I have a range of antibiotics mange treatments etc plus a well stocked first aid kit Using the right one will depend on which one the vet tells me to use I will give him a list of the meds I have I won"t just pill pop him :) Ive seen some things treated some wounds however this one hasn"t come up (no pun intended) -

just did a measure 5cm long 2 cm wide its gone down since yesterday ......... I did look it up and it said a vet will need to drain it so looks like a vet trip I have plenty of antibiotics here so thats covered :) Thankfully its not a major thing . Since he"s a bit of a sook I reckon he will play on it AFTER the vet :D all his vaccinations are up to date ...I thought at first it may have been a bee sting as we have stupid palms that flower and the bee"s go nuts sadly because we rent my request to have them removed was denied ----don"t even get me started about their leaves the seed pods etc -
Our 18 moth old jack russell x foxy has a large lump on his neck . The lump appeared out of the blue no pain when touched or lightly squeezed It is firm to touch but moves around under the skin He doesn"t seem to know its there He doesn"t scratch it eating as per normal Hasn"t slowed him down any No visable marks no break in the skin While I know most people would have me high tailing it to vet and of course I would had he been in pain etc But as my vet likes to charge and preform every test under the sun I thought at least if I had some form of idea I wouldn"t be a sucker for un-necessary tests

mmm it was my first thought but that would be petty and selfish and I would hate to think lives would suffer as a result . I just wasn"t sure if there is a kill list every week or only when pound is too full? Its always been a big post from them with updates dogs photos and notes etc so I thought it was strange ps on that other subject the story is no longer pinned to the top of their facebook page I guess they got enough to pay the bill ?

Maybe Im feeling a little dumb after seeing what gets donated .I don"t have money to spare .So I donate what I can when I can in other things Once I donated washing powder and fabric softener because the rescue had a lot of puppies at the time so I thought washing puppy blankets and such. I also donate gift cards so they can buy the specials on at coles or woollies . Also things for the rescuer such as a box of choccies just as a way of letting them know someone cares about what THEY DO. I often grab all the mark down stuff from the bargin bins such as cat toys food bowls etc. For me I just stock up then dish it out I know its not much and I know cash would help but I figure say $20 wouldn"t make a dint but if you didn"t have to buy washing powder you could buy something else (or give it to a carer) and as Ive always been brought up to believe every little bit helps However after seeing the goods that get donated I WISH I COULD TOO but it makes me feel my little bit is rather poor does that make sense? Im not asking for a big round of applause or anything but would I be wrong in thinking whats the point when they get such and such ? Then I think if that was me I would be grateful for anything someone gave me so thats how I like to think the rescues Ive randomly helped feel

thats what I mean the community is stepping up and in and giving them everything they need and want and then some They fundraise almost every month in a big way I believe their prizes include $300 watches,$2500 worth of house painting and many many more Not sure how much the tickets are couldn"t see a price . Without the backing they wouldn"t be able to do as much as they do .I just don"t like that their main focus is always asking for money and donations .They only ever thank the rescuer which is abit sad . I like the silent get in there and type of rescues the ones who don"t harp on for the glory the ones who don"t save the truly sad cases just so they can get a story out of it .Even when they get the money they need they still ask for more .I think its rude . There are a number of rescues out there IM SURE that would love this amount of help Which is why I like to help the ones who don"t get as much .Like most people its hard to give to everyone.I look around and try to help those who don"t seem to get as much I would like to think that at least helps them in a small way .... Are there more rescues in certain states than others? I guess it would also depend on the animals needing saving too? Maybe certain places have more community involvement ? I know my town has very few rescues no pounds and no real vet help for them .so less community knowledge as well as help .

I do hope I can word this without stepping on toes and have it making sense. I love rescue groups and I know you all work so hard .There is so much more than the public see"s .Working with animals is hard enough without throwing in everything else . Lately Ive noticed a group that seems to always pull out more dogs than they have the means to cope with. Im sure some people are jumping up and down now saying a life saved is a life saved and bow down to them. However if you can"t afford to care for that animal or even house him then shouldn"t you wait and do whats within your means first? The group Ive noticed although is a Rescue group seems to have everyone else bailing them out, paying the bills, being the cares, providing transport and the donations flowing in are enough to cater for several groups across the state yet they claim to be doing it all by one person .Im not an idoit I can see whats going on its advertised for everyone to see and they make every effort to flaunt their wears yet make equally the same effort to ask for more and more. Half their luck some may say good on them for their efforts to aquire so much but this leaves a funny taste in mouth... Its not the green eyed monster but I just don"t get how they can have so much continue to ask for so much more .and get it yet still claim they have nothing .Pull dogs out with no backup plan no carers and no money Then like the hand of GOD all is handed down in the nick of time. Wouldn"t it be better to help the ones already in their care rather than get more and more then have everything handed to them on a silver platter That to me isn"t rescue. RESCUE is the men and women who work their fingers to the bone who strive to do the best they can without the need for public glory .Its the rescues who put everything they are into something the truly believe in. Its not about showcasing the numbers you have saved but the ONES you have saved the happy endings and yes even the sadness Its about being human and doing amazing work for those who cannot speak for themselves .Im sure many of you have had to make the heartbreaking decisions I bet you have even missed out on the stuff you shouldn"t have . For many of you its not about plugging your fundraising raffles but plugging your homeless . To those Rescues I say THANKYOU

and there we have it a far cry from 5 pages ago . I do hope people will see this quote and be able to now make an informed judgement about Bens case . For lack of a better word Im a pound fan by that I mean I believe in adopting a poundie I worry more about the impact of these things on the animals STILL waiting . I also think the rescue sould be ashamed of themselves for holding back on the whole story By telling people he recieved no care while in the pound is misleading .Isn"t it wrong to gain money from a misleading story and/or lies maybe Im old school but I wouldn"t do it .There are so many rescues who would love a donation and people can only give so much Its hard enough for them to decide who they should help. I do HOPE ben is now at least happy and finds a loving forever home

The pound isn't obligated to tell 'us' anything. If anyone is interested I am sure a call to the pound would answer this query however. I understand I thought it was them replying here so assumed they knew. I read the thread and blacktown list seemed upset at what was being written by others so just naturally assumed they knew the story and rather than go back and forth with who said what they could just clear it up and be done with it. I personally haven"t donated any money and would investigate more before doing so. If they obliigated to tell us I doubt they would over the phone either ? shame this has come to this I just hope others are smart enough to get both sides of the story too
-
couldn"t all this be cleared up by the pound just telling us what went on? Don"t they keep notes or a file etc of any/all dogs who had treatment . It reads to me this rescue has saved a few more since Ben and need assistance in the way of foster carers .For me if I couldn"t cope with the animals in my care and the costs involved why get more? YES I know its sad and we would like to save them all but you simply can"t and you must continue to make sure the ones you have already are getting all you can provide . At last count roughly 70 people had donated to the friends of Ben cause surely they can make up the difference ? I know any dog who finds their way into care costs money but it wouldn"t be fair to continue to ask for money for A DOG only to get more than enough and then use that for others. UNLESS you make sure everyone who donates knows the money is being spread around. The public loves pull at the heart strings stories and they love to hate animal cruelty stories .For me I now see this story as a stab at the pound with all the public already believes about what goes on in there I think this is just more bad publicity something the pound doesn"t need BUT on the other hand maybe the public will all rush in to adopt thinking the dogs are in more mortal danger while there ? Sadly this has lost all focus on ben and yes to me seems all about money and rubbishing Blacktown pound not here but by the Rescue in question if they work so well with the pound why didn"t they word it to read Ben came into the pound with his injuries not that the pound neglected him?
-
Ï had a quick squize through the FB page to see more updates and follow from the start .They claim no-one stepped in so Rockys did he has a foster carer and a number of donations had already been paid they started his own appeal page and from what I can read he is doing really well . It also states on the page there have been 10 adoptions in the past fortnight including some long termers I would assume all their vet bills had long been paid for so couldn"t some of that adoption money help? I found out all too well how a seemly healthy looking dog could rake up the vet bills so please don"t think I believe rescues are loaded and money available at the drop of a hat but $1200 for an op seems rather cheap compared to what it could cost the average person for their pet . Sadly I think this will become more about the story than BEN and even if the target amount has been raised will they continue to ask for more? BACK TO BEN Im glad he has been treated and will be able to find a new home .WILL this story lead to another backlash at pounds ? the public are always quick to jump on the band wagon and find it hard to believe there are always two sides to a story Surely someone has more info and this dog during his time there.I would hate to believe he really was left unattended in pain but I would also hate to think someone was geeing up a story to gain money and no thinking about the backlash it may cause Pounds are not a nice place but the staff and volunteers there are doing what they can like anyone else they too have rules to follow".I would like to believe they wouldn"t intentionly leave any animal to suffer From reading some of the 139 comments most of which read Rockys and merna are GOD they also could be read as starting a witch hunt against the pound . Rescue groups can only do whats within their reach many Im sure are full and stretched for cash add to that your personal lives be it working raising a family etc throw in dealing everyday with the public and animal welfare for those in your care then the paperwork and running around .AND while you"re at it throw in the odd behavour case or unforseen medical cases ....I take my hat off to those who don"t parade these things but focus on the animal first and foremost for if you"re doing these things I doubt you have time to post your greatness via social media everyday
