  1. unsure, it was puppy, but not super young... Will have to ask her :) But he is only 1 now and she has been going for a long while to the new one :) That seems impressive ! What was the problem ? puppy, or dog?
  2. OK :) thanks :) Are both methods affective? or one better than the other? The person who recommended it to me also went to the one I am currently at and found the new one I am going to MUCH better for our breed. The methods worked and corrected behaviour in two sessions which she has spent weeks trying with the first school. SAhe also knows a few with artic breeds who felt the same.. She rates it highly.. Hopefully it will work for me... The current club you're going to sounds more like a purely positive club, Bonney's is much more old school.
  3. why? :) Not sure I get what you mean :) Also I agree regarding desexing, hence why we have looked elsewhere...
  4. Thanks. I did mention I dislike halti's when I emailed them and she said she would check my equipment. She has been going a VERY long time and has high recomendations and dvds and books out. She also lectures all over. She must know what she is doing, so hopefully this one will be great :) We only have a harness and a martingdale and flat clip collar at the moment.
  5. From what I understand They tell me its a safety issue. That they are more likely to have training issues, fighting issues etc... if they have entire dogs in training. They also said I have to weigh up between a unsocalised dog who happens to keep his bits and will potentially end up in rescue with issues from not being trained or a desexed dog who is trained and maybe a little smaller. I have to weigh which I want. I told them I wanted him to get to 12 mths at least as he is a large breed dog and takes longer to develop. They mentioned when I said I was worried and he needed to fully develop, they said well he cannot come training then. This is the main reason we have been looking for another school. I also mentioned my husband grew up with intact dogs with no issues and somebody told me he was lucky.. Bonnies has come highly recommended and a person who goes says they will only let the VERY experienced use a check chain collar apparantly. They prefer to use a halti but have said they will look at my equipment I have when I go. I was already considering getting a blackdog halti due to pulling issues... It also is a VERY experienced trainer... I am confident in their methods expecially as I know others who have gone and still go... I may consider desexing earlier if I feel we have issues and itws best for us as a family, however I will not be forced into it as I wish him to develop as much as possible first. The trainers he is with already is HIGHLY recommended on this forum, many times. and all over the net! So I am kind of confused that their methods on this thread are not what others think right.... Sorry just to clarify, The training school was telling you when you had to desex or you couldn't continue going??? That is the most insane piece of crap I have ever heard. Do they believe entire dogs are untrainable or do they just not have the skills to potentially deal with a dog who may be feeling its hormones. Run, don't walk away from these bunch of morons!!!!
  6. What is your thoughts on it? reading and watching online.. I am very inexperienced with dog training, I have never done it before despite having dogs for 12 yrs in the UK and growing up with them. I have since learnt their value :) o I want the best I can and this is over a hour away. No - nothing except for watching the videos & reading online .
  7. Yes. He has to be desexed no later than 7 mths and they have to check his certificate or he cannot continue to go. He is already 4 mths and I am not ready to desex him until at least 12 mths. Sorry just to clarify, The training school was telling you when you had to desex or you couldn't continue going???
  8. Yes, his litter mate goes and her owners older dog goes too... Do you know anything about it? Ok... do you know anyone who's been there ? :)
  9. Was recommended by a friend and you dont have to desex early, like the other training one..
  10. We will be starting at Bonnies next week, so hopefully it will be great :)
  11. I mentioned he ran of and I had to chase him when I called him to come in, he is only young and thinks its a fun chase game LOL, they mentioned why does he have that freedom, he shouldnt have that freedom in the garden, to be able to do it and he should be leashed! I mentioned we had issues with him toiletting on the lead, which cause real problems in the beginning and now is not a problem as he goes freely to the toilet when I take him out, watch and treat. I was told he has to learn to toilet on the leash. I however, didnt follow this advice, he has way too much fun playing in the yard and I really dont want to stress his toileting out either as he hasnt had an indoor accident for weeks and weeks and is only 17 weeks old. We are actually switching training schools soon due to another issue regarding desexing, so will ask them their thoughts :)
  12. Hi, it wasnt about not ever being outside just not left alone whilst you go out, from what I recall them saying :) I am no expert, I freely admit and am learning all the time. This is what we told when someone asked about leaving pup outdoors, when they were talking about pen/crate training. Not about playing out when people are about. They said all the outside noises and stimulation stops pup getting much needed rest when your out, which leads to behaviour issues and training issues... I was actually told not to let him free run in the garden, but have him on the lead when he is out, so he cannot ignore me and run around and he shouldnt have free run, however, it is not possible to restrict him to a small area, he likes to have a run about so I have not done this advice..
  13. This was a article I found and NOT from the dog training. I find personally my puppy cries to come back in as we are inside and its too hot outside. even when we are outside he prefers to come rest indoors. Maybe its different with different breeds too, as my type of dog is not an outdoor dog and will be really unhappy and destructive if left as an outside dog. I also have outside dogs either side of me and they are real pests! I also said it was told to me by a reputable training school recently during puppy training and not just something I thought and made up :) they are also behavourists. This article is only about dogs who are outside 24/7, not in the OPs case of just when she isn't at home so it isn't really relevant. The dogs are not going to get anymore companionship being left inside alone :p
  14. Not that they shouldnt be oputside, of course they should, just not left alone outside, whilst you go to work all day, from what I understand :)
  15. This is not from the training group but on a search you can find lots of info too saying the same or similar http://www.paw-rescue.org/PAW/PETTIPS/DogTip_BackyardDogs.php
  16. I am no expert just what I have been told. They also do not undesrtand people who have dogs and leave them outside all the time alone, they say they need to be with their family. Why have a family dog if its stuck outside alone all the time? They say it causes stress, illness, risk of theft and being baited or getting loose. They are harder to train and have higher surrender rates. They are social animals and confining them for all those hours to a yard alone is cruel. This is from what I have READ and some been told and not all my personal opinion although I do kind of agree. It also wont mean EVERY animal of course but statistically. This is from a highly recommended training school and often recommended on this forum! sorry but that would have to be the biggest load of codswallop I have ever heard. When I had GSD's they were pretty much outside 20 hrs a day. Their ribbons/sashes for obedience and agility speak for themselves. Some dogs do get sunburn that is true, cause some of them, no matter how much shade is provided, just have to sunbake
  17. The trainers say that its over stimulating for a pup who is left outside when people go out, it makes training much harder as they are over stimulated and tired. The distractions of outside makes rest for them impossible and it shows in dogs they train, they can tell which ones are left outside. They can also suffer from sunstroke, over heating and sunburn if left to free range. Mine have access to the garden when we are home though :) which is pretty much most of the time. Not sure how true this is, just what we were told at dog training. He says dogs should be indoors and safety ensured, when not supervised as puppies.. Maybe they are outside cause they are after all dogs and it's good for them, rather then be cooped up in a pen for 3/4 of their life. Pups need to feel rain on their back, sunlight on their face, wind ruffling through their fur, chase a leaf blowing along the ground. I appreciate this is not always possible for people living in flats/units but if you have a backyard, then yeah I think the dog should be allowed to enjoy it, on his own terms, not with a human hovering over them.
  18. In a large pen with a concrete floor, fake grass and lots of toys :) I am suprised so many are outside, I would be so worried they would escape or be stolen. The dogs either side of us are left outside all day and are a pest The dog training said its not good for puppies too leave outside either..
  19. Just thought I would give a quick update for those interested :) Casper is 16 weeks now and over 14kg of fluff. yesterday we went to the free puppy groom at the groomers. He came back bathed and dried, groomed and white... SO CLEAN. Today we gave him his new bucket with water as he digs in his bowl BIG MISTAKE but lots of fun!! Before he removed it from the door after
  20. Thanks :) 24 hours after the bath, no sooner.
  21. Thanks. I think with residue for the kids, I have little option as ALL treatments will leave some residue for the kids, except tablets. I wish they would make a tablet asap! I will tell the kids to not touch him around the neck for at least 48hrs after treatment, this is easier during a school week. He sleeps in the crate when we will apply it before bed, so will be dry before morning and no cat will get near him as he is in the crate, door shut and our bedroom door shut as we dont have the cats in our bedroom at night. morning will be school run, so would be almost 20 hrs since treatment, when they come home... Kids not touch that night so next evening would be almost 2 days, that should be OK, I hope... Will order advantix next time.. I hate chemicals, we only use vinegar to clean in the house and organic meat, fruit and veg! But have little choice... I never thought of that about different countries :) So yes a real consideration...
  22. Does anyone know how long to wait before applying tick/flea treatment after a bath. My pup had a bath yesterday afternoon at the groomers and I just realised he was due his tick/flea stuff at the 2 week mark on wednesday! I was in hospital having surgery and completely forgot ... How long should I wait after this bath?
  23. this looks interesting (product at the bottom) http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/natural-flea-and-tick-control.aspx
