Hi. I have read so many articles and had so much different advice regarding the age to desex my dog, including on this forum. He is a 6 mth old male samoyed and some say not until he is 18mths-2 yrs due to the bone growth and development and risk of bone issues if done too soon, others have said he can be done anytime and wont cause issues, unsure what too believe? He is satrting to lift his leg and pee along the fence line and becomming more and more ignorant in training, which he has attended since 10 weeks. He humps the carpets and goes wild on the lead on walks now, trying to get to the yard dogs which he previously ignored. Whats your opinion on the best age? thanks also recently read an article which says 84% of fataal dog bites were from desexed dogs!! so I am assuming desexing is far safer in a family dog which we will not breed from, expecially when there are 3 outside un dexed yard dogs around nearby.. Also all the breeders for the next dog we are looking at for the end of next year, dessex before you buy them, as tiny puppies and none will sell undexed puppies, is this the norm for some breeds?
-
My council is also a yearly rate, we will get Casper desexed before its next due in July, he will be around 12-14 mths old. We will be getting a malamute next year and contacted many breeders, they ALL desex the pup before we get them regardless, so they are done before 10 weeks and it seems the norm for these breeders?

I check my pup every day, he is on frontline plus and so far no ticks or fleas and ONE of the several vets has pulled 126 of since July in our area they really scare me, he is so hard to feel with his thick samoyed fur. We keep our lawn mowed, dont go to Bush areas and walk in the middle of the road instead of the grass when possible.

Thanks, sourced some locally through Canine country, pet quality but I spoke to the supplier and happy with all the answers :) thanks all
-
thank you so much, there are a few local ones, will ring around :)
-
thanks, thats about 45 mins away, hoping to source a little more locally :) but will pay it a visit if we cannot find anywhere else. I have found a pet supplier nearby :) I see it at the Logan hyperdome Coles all the time.
-
They dont sell it at any of my local ones, was hoping to find a cheaper source too, as he will be eating 750 g a day! I can get chicken frame mince for $2kg, but wanted roo and beef for variety, beef is just over $4 a kg at woolies, so looking for cheap roo too :)
-
Hi, anyone know a good quality supplier in Brisbane southside or Logan for Roo for my puppy? I am having trouble locating it and Not one of the Coles or Wollies anywhere in the 40min drive sell it? The local butchers only has pet grade in 1.5 kg already frozen packs and I wanted to sperate into 500g meals and freeze !

Funnily, we went to visit for the first time, when he was 7 weeks old as its a 2 hr journey, and the pup she picked for us, only days before, was the first one to come up and greet the entire family, he went from one to another of us, climbing on our laps and greeting us, she swears she never trained him to do that LOL :) It was fate :) she also knew which one would fit for us perfectly :)

Our breeder picked ours. In the UK I picked our pup from 3 weeks old and it was a bad choice, she wasnt suited to our other dog or family at all. This time we told our breeder what we were looking for, about our family and lifestyle and our experience. We had pick of the males, but she ended up picking our male out of the 4. I was a little gutted at the time, as I wanted to pick with her and not for us, however, she absolutely made the right choice, he is PERFECT for our family and lifestyle and temperament. When we get our second puppy (malamute) we will aske the breeder to pick again for us, based on our male and his temperament too, so they will be a good match, as well as our family.

My mum raised two labs, she bought one and a week later got another. They always slept together and were left together with no issues. We also had two samoyeds IN the UK, we got a second when our male was around 3. Never had any issues, we crated them both seperately when we were out and at night anyway. We will be getting a malamute when our current puppy is around 18mths old. Our male is in a huge pen when we are out, so unsure about the mal as was going to put them both in the pen, why cant you keep them together? Will check with the breeder but everyone I know with two keep them together. We will crate at night in seperate crates side by side in the bedroom and if we need too keep our sammy in the pen and the mal in the crate when we go out.

My breeder mentioned this with one of her pups, that the new family were saying it was agressive. NO, it was just trying to herd the kids... My pup does it to the kids and occasionally to me, I do pull him up on it as nipping our ankles is not acceptable, however, I also respect thats its 'normal' and he is just doing what comes naturally too him, like the yapping and the digging, totally normal sammy traits although I have been told on here that I shouldnt blame his 'breed' I dont understand that? as accepeting and understanding his breed, is the WHOLE point and explanation why he does what he does. All my other sammies did similar and I expected him too do also and he does. He gets trained to fit in more with a family life, we steer him to acceptable behaviours and give him an outlet for his natural instincts, we accept his traits from his breed too. :)

I am no expert but I totally agree with HW OK... Oh please right back at you. A dog is what we want it to be regardless of what it's been originally bred for. Consider nature vs nurture. Sorry, but that statement demonstrates that you clearly have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. It's nature AND nurture that make a dog. But nurture cannot change what nature has hardwired, nor can it add what isn't there. That's why you don't see Golden Retrievers doing protection work or working sheep. Or Whippets livestock guarding. No doubt you think its always the fault of an owner if the dog has dog aggressive tendencies? Wonderful.

are Australian jerky OK? I read this recently. We always use lamb puffs for treats as he loves them but always australian made without anything added.. Howveer this claims its jerky itself which is the issue and not only Chinese made. However, having an artic breed, they would of been fed dried out meat in the wild. http://www.dogster.com/lifestyle/dog-health-food-treats-jerky-killing-dogs-ask-a-vet

First Obedience Class - Wouldn't Stop Barking!
fluff1234 replied to Puppynovice's topic in Puppy Chat
I agree the trainer should of stepped in to help. My pup got pulled out of class the other week due to me not being able to get him to do anything or listen to me, they were great and gave him a little one on one he needed. (it was a very hot day) They are there to help you train and should of given you advice and shown you what to do when he was barking. -
I am at 2 training schools at the moment (in transition) One says a flat collar for training (however I dislike the flat collar as my old dog used to slip them) but they also recommended the Infin8 Halter blackdog for walking when I needed it. ( have ordered one) The other recommends a halti, so hoping the one I have already ordered is good enough :) I like my Martingdale collar personally. I also havea harness but all it does is help him pull stronger! We are also struggling with walking training, he has little interest in the food treats when walking ....( the only time, he is very food orientated normally)
-
I have a martingdale, however. Two training school at the moment, one reecommends flat collar and the other a halti.

My pup chews them metal lead! I am a great believer in this !! :D saves problems of mouthing/chewing/playing before they even start :)
