Hey all I was just wondering what are your methods for introducing dogs? We have currently took in a 4 yr old female neighbours Husky who is fairly overweight. We got her vaccinated, wormed, desexed etc... but had to make the choice to bring her home from surgery which she had on thursday and was so overwieght we got hit with an obese fee. We currently have Our 8 mth old bouncy and energetic Samoyed. We are doing OK, except for a few growls or snaps here and there, due to his pushiness and lack of personal space awarness or manners, so keeping him leashed, restricting him when he starts getting too invasive on her and monitoring him. He has NOT growled or grumbled once and has no awarness of her warning growls or even her snaps when he has tried to jump on her or took the fauning to a higher level! I want this to work and feel sorry for my baby boy stuck on a lead when all he wants to do is play but respect that she is just 4and just had surgery and getting used to us. She is otherwise calm and very affectionate. So what are your methods? how do your dogs interact? She will come and say hi to him, she will drink water near him and will lie near him, she only gets understandibly fed up, growly when he has been to fussy for too long or she it tired and wants to be left alone. They are crated side by side at night next to our bed with no issue other than we have to carry her in the crate as she has never been crated before, but is OK and does sleep. Her wound does look a little greenish last night so we will be following up with the vets today so she is probably not feeling the best as well as having huge surgery anyway, her appetite is off. I will be buying day crates (this happened quickly so we used his spare day crate, which he never goes in, for her at night) She craves affection and attention, going from one member of the family to the next for strokes and security cuddles and he craves being next to her! he adores her and wants to play!

Hi all I am posting this in the husky and in rescue as unsure which is the right one? We are opening our home to a 3 yr old female husky. I am planning to give her lots of walks and play with the kids and our pup. She is overweight by feeling her belly, but could have worms? She is escaping from her current home due to being left alone all day whilst they work and is also undesexed. We will be paying for her desexing and then we will collect her after recovery as we have an intact 7mth old samoyed. She is also not vaccinated, deflead or wormed, so will be sorting all that out at the vets, prior to bringing her home. She has been today for a play for 3 hrs, we collected her and dropped her home and all went well. Our boy is a little eager and was showing a few bad manners pushing her down which she submitted after a little trying not too and trying to knock her over a little and just play but she eventually told him of and it did go pretty well overall. I will want to crate her though, we do have a spare crate and it will be for bed and when we go out only. She has never been in a crate, so getting info urgently now in advance. She was pretty mellow here, she didnt try to escape out the open gate when we went to her house too meet her, she only escapes when left alone, which she is a lot. She wont be left alone here unsupervised and will be in the playpen once we know they are OK together, in the garage with our male. We have no reason to leave them alone yet until kids are back to school and then only mon-wed for a few hrs at a time. Any ideas about crating her at this age? our male goes sound asleep and runs into his crate at night next to our bed and doesnt make a peep all night, she will be in another crate next to him. She has been raised with cats, horses, young kids etc.. so is pretty calm and I think she may not have a high prey drive? they can take bones out of her hand and the kids at her home seem to fuss her, hug her and stand on her paw with not even a reaction which as we have a 5 yr old is very important. She hasnt been on a lead much but walked pretty calmly with me when I tried her and came back to me in the yard when called, sat to have her lead on and was really very well behaved. She seemed to love our children. We will be her 4th home, her first was ayoung couple who passed her on to neighbours, who passed her too family as they didnt have a large enough yard and she has been with her current owners for 2 yrs. They do love her and only rehoming due to the escaping as they are out a lot. She only got annoyed when our male kept pestering, but when we told him no and made him lie down, they both went to sleep, he only bothered her is she got up, but it was his yard and first visit and he does need to learn manners as he is pretty full on and she is undesexed :) No growls, showing teeth etc, very calm. This was within the first few hours of her being here :) When she left, they were both lay down and he cried after she had gone at the back door

I just wanted to add Raw4paws in the Brisbane area, been using it for a short time, but very happy with the results. I have discussed the food with the owner multiple times and very happy with her answers. Its great food, human grade and all complete, so very easy to use. I use it in conjunction with Vets all natural and fresh meat :)

Just a little update. Thanks to everyone who replied. Casper is back to his normal self, hot spot healed and he is being much better behaved :) No more growls at all. We are currently holding of in desexing for now, he is now 7 mths old. He is marking outside everywhere in our garden, but we havent had any issues indoors or on walks. I dont have a problem with him marking the fenceline, but we do when he is marking the legs op the gazebo, expecially when we are sat in it! So will be trying to alter that. He hasnt been training over Xmas and with the hot spot and is far more chilled, I think training stresses him in the heat. I know Samoyeds dislike repetative stuff anyway as they get bored, his breeder says 20 mins in enough, so an hr is too much for him, we think. We will continue for now though, but be a little more thoughful to him when he gets fed up and take a break. Overall, he is an amazing pup, he listens to me mostly and pretty much follows me everywhere. He is a BIG boy, last time we weighed him was weeks ago and he was over 25 kg, so he is probably way more now! He will be like his dad :)

Thanks all xxx the breeder came today and gave him a good look over and is super happy with him and his temperament and pretty sure it was the hot spot and pain. He has been normal over the last 24-48 hours and no more growls etc since my husband.. He is on meds for 2 weeks and cream for a week. My poor boy xx

Family Dogs Kill 3 Mo Baby: Different Version Of All-too-common Story
fluff1234 replied to sandgrubber's topic in In The News
very strange. I do agree, the baby would of screamed when it hit the floor and awoke or alerted somebody? If the dogs were 'playing' ith her, she would of screamed even more! -
Thanks for all your replies, info and help xx well all a development, not sure if this explains the issues we suddenly had? I guess time will tell? I noticed he was pacing around yesterday a lot and again today, actually he has been increasingly pacing for the whole week... The last 2 days he has been crying to go out and not actually wanting to go out, we thought he was too hot, then I noticed he was obsessively licking his testicles today and rang the vets. They told me too take him in. When we got there, they needed too sedate him as he was so sore, it appears he has a 'hot spot' on his testicles and they had to shave them and put cream on and he is on meds for 2 weeks and has to keep a cone on so he doesn't keep licking for a few days. He has caused the hair too Matt around the area with the heat, friction from walking about etc... and then licking, which has causes the swelling and irritation and soreness. He must of been in pain for a while without it being obvious until today there was something wrong. I have noticed him being a little funny the entire week but it has been so hot, he wasn't crying or in obvious distress and has been eating, going for walks, toileting normally, training at home and running around the garden with the kids, so I didn't suspect anything other than the heat. I am now wondering if this could of been the cause of the growling/snapping on the few occasions, he has NOT done this since.

thanks, we have a kong but we only use it for going out with peanut butter, might have to buy him a different one for in the house :)

Hi Can anyone give me any ideas for suitable and reasonably priced activity toys to keep my active and easily bored samoyed puppy busy. He still chews everything and will eat paper etc.. and can pretty much destroy a soft toy in a minute flat. So it needs to be TOUGH, hardwearing and spike his interest, so he doesnt get bored

Glad I read this, all the reviews I can find have been really good, was going to get it as we HATE spot ons with kids around and all the chemicals for my poor pup..

I got one from ebay, its been fantastic. He doesnt slip and its sturdy for his 25kg and growing body :)

Also, this growling was a day AFTER we went to my friends for the evening with him, she has two dogs and one snapped at him constantly, I was over protective and shileded him and kept telling him to leave her alone, but he didnt seem bothered, infact he tried to keep playing with her, the male did growl at him but was OK and let them sniff each other, do you think it could be something to do with that? the male was pretty dominant over him and did pin him down and he let him pin him down, in a submissive way, until the female tried to nip at his butt, whilst he was down! I thought it would be fun play with friends dogs, but didnt work out that way! he did submitt to this dog and has in the past to his sister, so unsure if he is OVERLY dominant just challenging?

:) thanks I have emailed several places :)

Thanks 3 vets have said sounds hormonal and to desex!!!
-
I have emailed the trainers as she is also a behavourist.. he hasnt done it to me, he wpouldnt even attempt it i dont think and this has ONLY happened over the weekend? He is usually a pretty placid pup :)

OK thanks :) any recommendations?

Can i just check Is growling/snapping which he has just done twice in 2 days too hubbywhen he left him inside to collect the poo and when he come in he snapped, growled and stormed out, like he was mad he put him inside or this morning to our eldest when he stroked his head when he was lay down, is it hormonal? He is NOT normally like that at all, he does grumble and moan but doesnt snap or growl????
-
I am also wondering if its just too hot and that could be the reasons for the playing up too? it is boiling at dog training here in Brisbane, even at 7.30 am and he is panting A LOT. I probably wouldnt want to do the same thing 30 times either in that heat with his coat! hence why the better behaviour at home? of course he plays up at home too, he is a 6 mth old boy, but nothing like at training!!! I know the marking outside can be normal for his age, his brothers had just started it too this very week. Will have to work on this ignoring and walking on lead though :)
-
Thanks, i am in contact with his siblings and both his brothers have been desexed this week! We will be def waiting now. The trainers are giving us extra training and some one on one to help as he is a very stubborn one, will try a walk beforehand but the training school is over a hr away and starts at 7.30 am, so we leave at 6.15 and thats a rush enough! I am going to take more high value treats too and just get mushy pockets LOL He has always had selective hearing! Its funny but NOT funny in trainig, he decides right thats it I already done it and I am NOT doing it again and just puts the breaks on, you just cannot budge him! It would be so amusing if it was somebody else it was happening too  He is actually MUCH better behaved at home than training and will sit, lie down, wait for food, no longer barks when I am preparing meals, we are working on jumping up and its going 50-50 at the moment but improving. Grooming is better and he listens when i tell him off as he likes to get annoyed and try to bite me in grooming, but this is hardly ever now and will stop immediately when I tell him firmly. Recall is hit and miss depending if the neighbours dogs are out in the garden! But training, gee I hate going at the moment..... Although I did look around and he wasnt the only one not listening and not prforming he just liked to make a bigger show of not doing it, typical sammie :D

Thanks will do, will look at all the links tomorrow xxx thanks everyone so much :D xxx Both humping and pulling/reacting are bad manners and you should not ignore . There is HEAPS of info/techniques in that EXERCISING REACTIVE DOGS thread I linked to previously ... have a good read :)

We have had a cocker spaniel growing up, not sure what age he passed as I was younger, I am not even sure what he passed from. We had two puppy farm labs then, the ones from the large pet store where they are all behind glass frames I was again young and my mum bought them, they had LOTS of medical issues and both passes around 8-9 yrs old but again not sure. I have had a rescue samoyed and a sammy pup, sadly we had to rehome, as we were emigrating and the older one was 11 and couldnt cope with the UK heat, I see in my mind he will always live, on the beach with the woman who just lost her elderley dog and whom he seemed to pick ( we personally rehomed them with help from rescue as we helped out the rescue from time to time and knew them personally)

Thanks all After discussion with a friend and hubby, we are going to try to hold of until he is over 12mths.. He is only really becomming a REAL pain at training!!! probably due to the other dogs all around? The peeing down the fence line, doesnt really worry me, as long as it doesnt happen inside. The walking I can deal with for now, gives my arms a work out! but will try treats to heel him and may have to resort to his halti he has for training.... humping I can deal with as long as it isnt me or the kids They had to pull me out of class again today for one on one. I was on catch up anyway, so we have missed 3 weeks, as my cat bit me and I had to have an operation, so we missed weeks 5,6 and 7 but did the final week (its the second lot of training at a different school, as the first was not strict enough for his stubborness and this one is MUCH better) They have decided today to put me back to week 3 with no extra charge and help me they are soo cooool :) They say I need to be firm as he is at the age where it begins and being a male and entire and a samoyed is the ideal recipe for stubborness LOL, I have to drag him mid way through training as he just puts the breaks on and refuses to budge! they did recommend to desex but not really for training purposes, they train LOTS of intact dogs, but more for the marking, ignoring and walks etc..

Yes a malamute, sadly EVERY local breeder desexes before being rehomed at 10 weeks! I have questioned it, but all say desex or no pup. This is multiple breedeers not just a few
