my local petstock is a Ripp, seriously the items in there are like 30% more expensive than the same item in other pet stores I visit, heck even Bigw stock some of the same items for less.

we do dote on him a bit as its our first dog owned by us, but he knows the rules of the house and works for his treats :D
-
I think diff breeds respond to different methods of blocking biting, for my boy a loud growl stops him immediately.
-
my only tip is be consistent with your blocks and praises, if you are blocking bad behaviour keep doing it till he realizes that he is not allowed to do it and don't stop blocking that behaviour or give up and let him have his way, dogs teach us patience and determination and they will respect that from us, they will put us up to test every chance they get and you need to be on top of it till it sets in, even when its set in there will be days when the dog needs a reminder of the way things are. The hardest part of all this is overcoming your fear of frightening or hurting the dogs feelings, remember they thrive on pack behaviour and understanding their place in the family, if they know you are boss and understand that they will listen to your commands, if they know they can get away with bad behaviour and have leverage over your they will use that to their advantage

Same on mine Daisy, he loves to bounce around so I'm keeping the fat intake a little low at the mo to reduce and unwanted weight on his joints.

Lisa my boy is on the VAN complete puppy mix with roo and veal mince, he is doing great so far, the breeder had them on this and she has had all her Aussies on this the last year, she can't praise it enough, good intake of needed nutrients and good firm stools. my boy is currently on 1cup of VAN, 3/4 cup of roo and 1/4 cup of veal mince per day, the veal is a fatty meat so it adds a nice balance for the pup as he grows, straight roo with the van is a little too lean for his age imo, once he gets to about 9-10 months I will probably cut back on the veal and go straight roo with the VAN, as well this he has meaty bones to chew on throughout the week and he has his meal in a sliced open soft veal marrow bone twice a week for a good calcium intake, I also give him half of a dentix at night for teeth care, although probably not required with the amount of bones I feed him Every other day I swap out one meat meal for VAN mix with yogurt and fresh fruit, just to spice it up a little and give him some extra nutrients.

OMG you must be a genius! I'm hanging out for Nixon's basic obedience class which starts in 2 weeks. We're doing pretty well with his training in a lot of areas, but I have no idea how to deal with the shoe issue. I'm hoping it will settle a lot when he's done teething - his mouth looks so painful at the moment, poor baby... It could be a breed thing, I know I saw allot of shoes not touched at the breeders home. I don't give him a chance to grab one really, as soon as I see him going for one or having a good look at one I warm him, he got the idea pretty quick, I also never give chase when he has a shoe in his mouth, otherwise its a game for him, the first time he did grab one I was probably a bit too loud but I think he understand as he dropped it immediately, socks are another issue, he drops when asked but I think the smell is sometimes too enticing lol... I try to mental train at least 5min a day, I'm working on "roll over" at the moment, he has down pat so far: sit down (lie down) - if he is hyper can be a little naughty and only squats lol up (get up on the item I point at) paw (place front paws on the place i point at) hold (can get about 7 full paces back now before he starts to think about moving) Touch (I use a stick and tell him to touch and he touches the end with his nose) -
I would be more than happy to, koda takes a second or two to weigh up a visitor but warms up FAST when he knows your all friendly :D

He's so lovely when he's being good. He's also a sap for the shoes, if you've left them on the floor or aren't watching your feet, even if you're walking, he's there. I try really hard not to tread on him, but when he's launching a sneak attack on my moving feet I can't help it. He gets so upset too! Lucky he's learning to leave the shoes and things, he knows he gets a grumble when that happens. I have to admit to have been a bit short with him this weekend, i've been sick all weekend (stomach cramps and nausea, oh the joys never cease!) and he's been really misbehaving. Peed inside for the 3rd time ever, my fault but I just couldn't bend far enough to clean it so I really got sooky. We went for a walk to the local football field cause he was driving me bananas, and I think he knew I wasn't having fun so he didn't either, I felt awful after but I just wasn't feeling well at all. Then he refused to sleep past 4 and I was exhausted, that was the icing on the cake and I just burst into exhausted sick tears and I think I worried him a bit, OH went to pop him back in bed but he's slept badly after 4 since then, my fault but now I'm feeling better I feel soooooo baddddd. I'll have to spend some quality time tonight when I get home. No rushing about, lots of fun games and cuddles and things. Puppy school tomorrow so he'll brighten up seeing some other pooches! Don't worry steph, the pup needs to learn and its a process, Koda ran full speed out the back door today but my OH left the safety grate only half open and he hit it full pelt he is fine (thank god) but the safety grate is broken lol. He has learn't though that running full pelt while in the house is bad. Shoes took a while and occasionally I am having to remind him, but we have got to the stage now where I can leave shoes and socks on the floor without major worry. -

faces here koda goes mad if I lie down while we play, he tries his best to lick my face to death -
If you want a breed that won't give you the middle finger when something more interesting comes round the corner I would probably stay away from the spitz family tree, I'm sure with some dedicated training time you can control that habit but it would be allot more work than the other suggestions noted. I agree with lisa on the lab, didn't think about that, if you like a cuddle buddy my uncles old lab was like that, he used to love to snuggle up to you while watching a movie :) maybe do what I did and go see a show, bulla has one on every few weeks, you get to see allot of breeds there and get to talk to allot of peeps about the breeds, and if you want to show as well it would be good for you to see what its all about and like. Thats where I met my fav breed and I saw allot that day, probably over 40 diff breeds.

Phyria, I'm a little biased but have you considered an Australian Shepherd? med breed, males end up about 23-28kg, females about 3-4kg less. Very trainable, like a Collie but less hyper drive They don't drool and have a "dry" mouth Complete opposite of aloof really, love to be with you and do what you are doing when ever you are near Highly sociable if brought up right with training knows when its time to relax and turn off "play mode" adapts well to most situations where in VIC are you?

Keep the info coming peeps, if we can link to Google maps that would also be great for those of us who are new to AU and really don't know any of these names :D -
My boy is in a very large crate (big enough for when he is full grown and we need to car travel with him) with an extension and fake grass for when he sleeps at night, this is in our room, he hasn't used the fake grass yet and prefers to hold his business till we wake up, he calls to me about 6am which is good as this is when I get up anyway and I take him outside for his morning business, if he continues to do this for another month I might have him free roam sleeping in the bedroom. Koda is an outside dog during the day, I have erected compost fences on the sidings of my house so he cannot get near any gates but he has access to the whole yard, we have 2m high wooden fences with no cross beams showing on the outside, a kennel and also a covered area for shelter is provided, as well as lots of toys and bones to chew on during the day. When we are home from work he has access to both areas and choices himself where he wants to be, if inside though he is being taught its quiet time and relaxed time, if he wants to play we go outside.
