  1. If you own poms yourself you can approach it from a purely inquisitve side - why is he walking like that you've never seen it in your dogs before, does he struggle/take longer than he used to up stairs, has it impacted how long their walks are, do you think it's something she thinks you should be watching out for etc. Keep your attitude towards what you can do, not recommendations for what *she* should do :)
  2. I've noticed recently that after going to bed, my dog will lie there for a good 10 minutes licking the pads of both front paws, to the point he'll get wet spots on his bed under his paws. I've checked all four feet without any fuss, in between the pads, have stroked the pads myself with the flat of my finger, which he took as a cue to start licking my hands too. There doesn't seem to be any clumps or bleeding, though his nails could probably do with a clip soon. The skin between the pads seemed a little red, but I'm not sure if that was due to licking or not. He doesn't walk/run/play with a limp or any slower than he used to, the only thing I've noticed is that his pads seem dry to me (not sure what to compare to)?? He also likes pawing you for pats, and when you just pat/stroke his paw he'll happily sit there too. He's an ACD x. Is this normal behaviour, or should I be checking with a vet? And just today, when I was with him just before bed, he started... The only way I can describe it is hiccups. Can dogs get hiccups? It passed within a minute, and he didn't seem distressed about it at all, didn't even move his head from his pillow.
  3. Yes of course, that was just my two cents of what the end product of a well adjusted grey from GAP could be :) No comment about how suited they would be to helping another dog calm down, especially the pre-fostered dogs, as I've no experience in that area.
  4. I was at a stall GAP had just a few weeks ago, got myself a free colouring book (hah!) and one of the guys there was holding a greyhound in his arms, upside down and completely stretched out like a cat. Great organisation, very calm dogs.
  5. Bjelkier I might take a bit longer with Dante, just a heads up! Edit: i just realised it took me 2 weeks to do Zoey! That is probably enough time for me to do dante actualy haha. Absolutely no need for payment Jellyblush, I'm not good enough for that! especially from what I've read from your thread about Roo, special girl seems to need all you're giving her Stans mum, the first time I saw a greyhound's ears point at 90 degree angles from their head it took me a while to stop laughing. I never realised how much flop they had! And thank you everyone for the kind words!!
  6. I have been given the green light by iggy mum, so here's Zoey! Greyhound ears are so cute, but man, those folds almost killed me. Excuse the shoddy picture-of-a-picture, I'd like to brush up on some lines and my scanner is, hum, still sleeping. Original Picture I would love to :) Will definitely PM you when I work my way there!
  7. I've just finished iggy mum's little greyhound, will post it up once I get her okay that she doesn't want anything else changed! Will definitely try to get around to everyone, I'm so sorry that she had to leave
  8. Correct. They made up a fancy name to try and cut any connections to pit dogs. That clears things up for me, thank you both for the info.
  9. Hm, thanks for that, will keep in mind next time we go looking for places to road trip.
  10. Keep forgetting to take the camera out, but at least this one's from a sunny day ^^; Week 02~ And a second one, because I fiddled this this one a bit more - removed a plant off the side, unsaturated that previously bright pink shoe in the background, and removed his green tag because it was reflecting completely white from the sun. Orea looks like he's just been through a pack of them himself  Add a bit of grain to that picture Impatiens and you would've fooled me! tlc so dogs aren't even allowed on lead in that area? huh.
  11. Well, I've finally made it through this entire thread  We recently rescued a cattle dog (he probably has a smidge of border collie in him) who I am now pretty sure is fear-aggressive towards other dogs due to two bad incidences with his previous adopter. It took me a couple of days to notice, but although he will pull towards a dog/a fenced dog, he will always speed up once we're past it, and only very recently I discovered he'll start to whine if he's sitting too long when he knows the other dog is still around. We've had a bad moment, an off lead dog rushing him during our walk, but I haven't seen him cross his threshold enough for him to lunge, or bark (although his recall's shot), his foster had him living with her four other dogs before he came to us, and if I've come away with anything from reading this thread it's that overcoming this will be completely 100% achievable. The good thing is that he is a very typical cattle dog, eats like a vacuum, and so food can generally snap him out of anything. He'll also willingly sit pretty quickly during a walk when there's a fenced dog across the street and with some on lead dogs a fair distance away, but he doesn't relax. We usually walk early mornings so incidences are kept to a minimum, although I do let him have some off lead time at a fenced public oval near our house, and we can usually go there late on Sundays and it'll be completely empty of dogs. There'll be the stray sprinter who comes inside the oval but he's way too busy with his ball to notice them. Otherwise, he's the smoochiest boy, respects the cats, and doesn't dig or chew anything we don't want him to dig or chew when we've gone out for the day. We're scheduled to see a behaviourist early July (it has to be on a Sunday, and my stress levels for most of June won't be the best for addressing his problem), something I'm really looking forward to, for both his alert-dominance and anxiety. Staffyluv - how long has it been since he's gotten home? Have you tried making him stay in a room with someone else he knows, while you were elsewhere (out of his sight) in the house? Where does he sleep at night?
  12. It is generally used as a blanket term. But the definition becomes more of an issue in states with BSL, and people can't protect their dogs from the law (as well as vice versa, when people try to hide their dogs from the law). I was about to bring up the fox experiment, because not only did temperaments of the foxes change through breeding, but some lost the silver coat as well, and started developing much more variation - patches, black and white instead of silver fur, etc, which gives some indication as to how the variation in dogs originally started. When I say, 'it will take I while', I was referring to the time it would take for some people to accept them. I bet if you offered someone who was in love with their small white dogs who had health issues with a genetically healthy wolf, they would tell you thanks but no thanks! And 'wolf-like' isn't just a temperament. It's a behaviour. Wolves aren't 'tough' - they are wild. I can say that Lulu is even 'tougher' than a wolf; but that doesn't make her close to one. A wolf could never live with a modern human. Even wolf hybrids are banned outright in specific places for good reason. Another point that can be made is that not everyone can be an engineer, You need some kind of proof of qualification when you try to sell to the public a car that you made, and probably dozens of safety tests. The same standards just don't apply with dog breeding, and the restrictions in regards to selling alone are comparatively non existant. More mistakes are made, and more mistakes are continually made because without that education/qualification, some people just don't know better. Without that legal restriction, some people just don't care, and they are allowed to not care. There is also a more straightforward blame/responsibility between someone who had designed a faulty car, and someone who has bred genetically unsound dogs - an attitude that is changing, now with DNA testing and screening more widely available. As an aside, can you point me in a direction where I can read about the introduction of some Pit Bull in the AmStaff breed?
  13. She is an Alaskan Malamute x Siberian Husky, I think she is very pretty :) I think Mishka is very pretty too :D That fur just screams 'softness' at you. What breed is April? (I'm sure you've mentioned it earlier on in the thread ) Koda has the most beauuuutiful face JackC, I can't stop staring at his eyes!
  14. I see that heart shape, I do! I wish my cats would cuddle like this. Maybe if I clipped them....
  15. and not so fluffies! Hehe. I will definitely try to do them all. But just a disclaimer that I am notoriously slow. Halfway through with iggy mum's though so progress is being made!
  16. wahhh slow down guys i'm a really slow drawer! Happy so many people like the idea though! All the fluffies!
  17. As long as the owner of the original photo doesn't mind, I will be posting finished product here. However, my scanner seems to be, erm, sleeping at the moment, so what ends up being posted in the time being might be just a photo of a drawing.
  18. As in, in an ideal world, people would be able to change, or accept/work towards change, without having a threat pressing over their livelihoods in order to do so (so possibly 'change' would've been a better word than 'innovation'). Can't think of a good example off the top of my head. On a smaller scale though, something along the lines of a student staying up all night before a major exam, while they had all semester to study. In an ideal world, that student would be frowned upon by their peers for not better utilising their time, but realistically, they're with a bunch of friends on the same night doing the same thing
  19. I feel proud when my cat stops mid-jump onto the kitchen bench because I said no! Hehe. Doggie wise.. I'm proud that mine will stand perfectly still for me when I wipe each muddy paw before going inside. We never even had to train the behaviour. And the first time I sat in his dog bed to see his reaction, he just walked over and pressed up against my leg and went to sleep. It's always the little things that gets me.
  20. I just PM'd you the same time you posted  Such a sweet face - I'll get back to you in a couple of days!
  21. That was quick! Send me a shot of what/who you'd like, or post it here, I'll see what I can do! And everyone else - thanks so much for such a positive response. I'll definitely get back to you guys if this works out for me :)
  22. Since I don't have access yet to the off topic board (yet!), and this isn't about a 'photo' per say, I thought I'd post here. So for the next month my life is gonna start getting a little stressful, and I was thinking that I should take some quiet time out for myself during the periods while my new boy sleeps at my feet. Does anyone want a graphite head shot drawn of their four leggeds? I'm a little out of practise, but I've been drawing on and off my whole life with a couple of lessons in between, so I can hopefully promise something... not entirely abysmal. :D I don't want to turn relaxation into full out procrastination, so I'll just be doing the one for now and see how I go. So the first person to either post here, or message me, with a photo of something they'd like. Other animals welcome as well! Just not people I'm not that confident yet. 12/06 - Zoey the Greyhound 21/06 - Dante the Samoyed
  23. Another +1 for this. My puppy's first collar was a really skinny lightweight one, he'd scratch at it a little but didn't bother him too much. It's just a new sensation they have to get used to... like when you wear a new ring and it feels weird at first. Our first leash was quite lightweight too. Another +1 :D I know some breeders start by just putting a circle of thin, easily tearable paper around a puppy's neck (~5 weeks? I forget), sometimes working up to something slightly heavier, which sets a good foundation for when they get proper collars at their new homes. Probably a good idea if Tank's being particularly obstinate about his collar.
