What a relief to get your papers! We only got our papers when our pup was 14 months old. When she hit 12 months, we knew we only had until she was 18 months to get those papers. We tried Dogs VIC who wouldn't/ couldn't help. We implored the breeder repeatedly, this litter was their first. We really thought we would never ever see the papers! We got the run around and probably ignored for a little while. It wasn't until their breeder blasted them that they got their act together. Then we got the papers in less than 5 days! But there are breeders and then there are breeders. Minxy, I would like to know who your Akita breeder was. You can pm if you want.

How Kim Jong-un Didn't Execute His Uncle
Malakita replied to SkySoaringMagpie's topic in In The News
How cruel to deliberately starve those dogs. And what a horrible way to die. -
We own 2 large breed dogs whom we take into the city (Melbourne) by train regularly. We get a huge positive response from Asians of all ages. A handful especially Indians will just about shrink into the closest wall when our two walk past. But on the whole people love patting our two. Sorry that the OP finds some people insensitive, it is hard not to take it personally. But what I really hate is when the odd person makes a comment about our two eating or could eat small dogs. When my boy was about 7 months, we were at the vets. A lady said she had better put her smaller dog ,who wasnt even looking at my dog, into the car. When she came back, she told my boy his breakfast was safe in the car. I hating people judging dogs purely on size.

I have decided to go with Eden Hills. The lady I spoke to is really nice and their metal urns really stood out to me. They will pick him up today. She said she will also get some locks of fur for me. Thank you all for your help.

I rang Eden Hills this morning. They sounded nice. I will also look at Pearly Gates. Thank you all so much. :)

Thank you all for your replies. I will look into Edenhills this morning. And yes I also did see the one where they said they have the only animal hearst in Australia or something to that effect.

What Happens To Pet Shop Puppies....
Malakita replied to CrazyCresties's topic in General Dog Discussion
There is still a Samoyed puppy at the Knox City pet store. The poor mite did have another play mate but the pup has now been by it self maybe about a couple of weeks. It was $1800, yesterday the price was $1700. They also have a couple of Papillions, didn't see the price though. -
Bandit is a handsome looking boy! Nice coloring too.

Our female Alaskan Malamute was almost 12 months when we decided to bring home a male 9 week old Akita. Our girl is very boisterous and excitable and has a rough play style. Breed wise, they have quite similiar qualities. The breeder chose for us a male who they thought would be a good match for the existing girl. We have found it easier the second time around with raising puppy no 2. Our male is very easy going and tells his sister when he has had enough. Sometimes she chooses not to listen and they have come to a head a couple of times. It has been great bringing the two up together, despite her being almost 12 months at the time. She is a great example for him to follow, eg she does not chew things aside from her toys, she doesn't sit on our furniture, she rides well in the car and on the trains, is crate trained. We have put a lot of time and effort into her training and it has paid off. The foundation training is hugely important. We always supervise them when they play, and when they eat. They get on well together, better now that they are the same size. She tried to bully him more when he was smaller in size. We walk them together, sometimes our girl is not keen to go on walks if he isn't there. Because of his age, she sometimes doesn't walk far. Raising two dogs can be done, absolutely, you need to be consistent and put in a lot of effort.

My puppy recently had his teeth cleaned and scaled whilst he was under general anaesthetic (for something else). As they need to go under GA, it is very expensive to clean and scale. A month on and brushing his teeth each night, the tartar still builds up. He is on a kibble diet and eats frozen chicken carcasses. His main issue is he won 't chew hard things, eg dentastix, pigs ears etc. I try him with greenies, and I have to hold one end for him so he has a good grip with his mouth. So I am also in the same boat. I am also at a loss about what else to do. He is a large breed puppy.

Just nodding my head in total agreement with what sandgrubber said above.

The vet said phosphate. I asked again to make sure I had heard correctly. They both said phosphate. Then I checked the Blackhawk food bag to see the phosphate level but they were showing phosphorus. He does have dry food twice a day. He is not solely fed raw. And all the examples of what e has raw, is not eaten in one big heap. It is the variety he gets, of which he gets one thing.

The meaty bones are only chicken frames and turkey wings/ frames.. I don't give chicken necks as he swallows them pretty much. Unless I remember to buy some then freeze them in a fist size amount to slow him down. He doesn't manage other bones eg chuck bones, roo tail, chicken drumsticks, he just chews the meat off. He doesn't even chew the turkey bones and leaves the hardest part of the chicken backbone in the carcass. What is PMR? Not sure whether he can't chew or just won 't.

Prior to his blood work, he was getting Blackhawk and also raw. I don't mix mince and dry in the same meal. He has the Blackhawk and gets frozen meats to help clean his teeth.

My 7 month old Akita recently had blood work done, and his phosphate levels came back high. The vet said to cut out meat until he is a year old. Only feed him kibble and water, as that is all he needs (at the moment). I tried to ask about those people who feed raw. But he is like yours is a large breed and to not feed him meat for the next few months. What do other large breed owners do in terms of raw? I feed them hearts, frames, turkey wings and mince. Plus some veg.

I just bought a Kenwood steam mop as Harris Scarfe has them on sale at the moment. Just used a mop and bucket before , but just felt like something fancy! :) I bought the one with the thick floor pads that you just clip on to the mop head at either end. I thought it would be more steamy, you know more steam equals your floor being really clean. The pads get wet then your floor is left wet. So you need to wring the floor pads out when it gets too wet. I also bought them those Snooza flea free beds. I quite like them, and easy to clean. Would love a washing machine just for the dog stuff. Since we bought a new machine, hubby says not to wash any dog stuff in there. So I hand wash everything.

We used a kennel for a couple of weeks when we went away earlier in the year. Our girl was 10 months. She had been away before when she was 16 weeks, she went back to her breeders for 2 weeks whilst we went away. But that was different, she knew them and would be inside with them. I was incredibly stressed about her being kennelled. She is an inside dog and used to us being with her a lot. What about her toileting? She was toilet trained and knew how to ask to go outside. What if she came back naughty and just peed and pooed anywhere? Would she miss us? What if she fretted? The kennel didn't 't know her like we did blah blah. Admittedly I did tear up when I said goodbye but I wasn't a hysterical mess. My husband walked away quickly but his eyes were a touch wet. I had even packed her a travel case crammed with her toys, blankets and loads of treats. The next day I rang to see how she was, and once we were on the plane, there was nothing we could do. Anyway, fast forward 2 weeks later, and I honestly don 't know why I had spent all that time having a break down about how she would cope in the kennels. She was excited to see us, got in the car and everything was absolutely fine! It was like we were never separated. She settled back into her old routine with no fuss. So when I have to do it all again, I know she (and I ) will be completely fine.

I truly feel for her. It is devasting not knowing what happened to her beautiful dogs! When our cocky flew away the first time, I thought I would never forgive myself and the pain of not knowing if he was ok, would torture me. I hope she has some news soon.

How Do We Go About Changing Perception?
Malakita replied to Pretty Miss Emma's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yesterday my dogs and I were out and we met a couple also owned dogs. Anyway, along the line they asked if mine are pedigreed and I said yes. They said their Maltese isn't as they only wanted them as pets. Long story short, they said they knew of someone else with a Maltese. And as the pedigree only goes back 5 generations, so before that, they claim that this other person's Maltese had Dachsund DNA. My brain went huh!??. The Maltese needed a blood test for something or rather, and it was then the owners found out the the Maltese wasn't '100 % Maltese despite having a pedigree. Seriously, is this even possible? Unless the breeder was dodgy..... -
When Were You Convinced Your Dog Could Understand English?
Malakita replied to Leah82's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am convinced my Mallie girl understands English. We were out and she was lying down next to me. Our other pup was with my husband. Someone asked if they could take a pic of the younger pup, so our Mal gets up and sits right next to him to be included in the photo. It was pretty funny that she was so appropriate. A few days ago, we were sitting around talking with another person, and the two pups were lying down on their sides near us. The other person was saying males dogs seem to have a stronger scent than female dogs. I jokingly said our younger male pup just does smelly farts! No sooner than I said that, our Mal girl got up , turned around and sniffed her brother's butt. We find her so hilarious that she has been so spot on with these random instances.
