Just A Vent About Numpty Owners And Off Leash Dogs.
Malakita replied to Malakita's topic in General Dog Discussion
AGREE a million percent! Had a little fluffy run out from the driveway, cross the road and wanted to sniff my girl. The dog had no recall and ignored the guy. I said my dog is not dog friendly and the guy finally gets his dog back. And he tells it off followed by a smack. We also took the dogs to the beach last week. It is an off leash beach area along Beaconsfield Road in St Kilda. So there is a nature strip, then the walking path and then the path to the beach. So we had all finished up, waiting on the nature strip, just waiting for my girl to finish up squirting ( she drank too much sea water). We are always eagle eyed for any dogs nearby. But I was completely caught off guard when they both started to pull me and hard. Some guy had literally just pulled up his car to the kerb, and lets his dogs up without leashes. Thankfully both his dogs run straight to the beach and not towards us! Next time, I will be way more prepared for people who just let their dogs out straight from the car unleashed. -

That is just sickening. Why is she still allowed to breed, why hasn't she been de registered by Dogs Vic? Why aren't they more proactive? The poor dogs, so heartwrenching! Would she have bred from the male with cryptorchidism? Actually, she is so low, she probably would have.

Just spent 3 days in Rye and went to the beach everyday. Only had 1 dog approach mine. Every other person kept theirs away when they saw me leash mine. Quite a few stopped and asked why I had hold of mine, . This was an off leash area. I LOVE how other people keep their dog away as yours was on leash. Such consideration! I think that is so great! :) Hazywal, if we are down in MP over the summer and I see you, I will certainly say hi. Stan and Maddy will love their new home! I am sure you will get your confidence back in no time :) Her Majesty Dogmad, I hope the poor Pom is ok. Poor little mite -
Recommendations For A Behaviouralist In Melbourne.
Malakita posted a topic in General Dog Discussion
A work friend was asking about my dogs and training. But as I asked more questions, it sounds like she needs a behaviouralist. The dog is a 6 year old Terrier mix she got from Animal Aid. Kalley (the dog) was 2 when she was adopted and had been abused. I didn't ask for details. My friend also has another dog (of similiar size and a male). He is 15 and stills runs around with Kalley. They are both outside dogs, never house trained to be inside dogs. Kalley is obedience trained. Does the sit, drop, stay, come, wait for food etc. So the obedience part isn't the issue. But now that Buddy (the boy) is 15, she is worried about how Kalley will be if Buddy passes. Not that he is going anytime soon but he wont live forever she said. Kalley has very bad separation anxiety. When Buddy is inside getting a bath, Kalley runs around the yard screaming for Buddy. She really carries on. And when they come together again, Kalley sits on Buddy and licks him and acts like they have been separated for a lifetime. Kalley also is "socially awkward". She is not aggressive when she meets other dogs. She just stares at them face on. She doesn't like other dogs sniffing her butt. So when the other dogs get bored of looking at her, they move on. Then Kalley wants to run after them and still say hi. But then she will do her 'stare' again. She doesn't have good social manners I am told. It is like she doesn't know what to do when she meets another dog. She doesn't want to tell Kalley off for being socially inept, she wants to correct the behaviours displayed but doesn't know how. She wants her to know meeting other dogs the right way is good but Kalley is slouchy and tail between the legs. She wants positive reinforcement to help Kalley overcome her really bad anxiety and become more confident when greeting other dogs. So I said I would ask here if anyone had any recommendations for possibly a behaviouralist in Melbourne. My friend lives in Croydon South. If more info is needed, please let me know. -

You all make me feel better. As in I am not the ony lucky special one surrounded by idiots who insist on doing the wrong thing. It is incredibly frustrating for people who do the right thing. And being abused by these numpties make things even worse. I feel so angry! What makes these people so blind to reason? Why do they insist on being stupid/ ignorant. Like that old guy I told off in Coles yesterday for opening a soft drink bottle whilst in the aisle. I caught him doing it and taking a sip from it. Said he was going to pay. Never did, just ended up dumping the bottle somewhere. I ran out of the store to confront him. He wouldn't tell me where he dumped it and told me to go away. So any of you guys who buys soft drinks, always make sure the tops are definitely sealed when you buy them. As this disgusting old guy only took a sip, the bottle will look untouched. And as it was dumped, some employee will just return it back to where it is meant to be. And some very unlucky person will then buy it. Sorry, that turned out to be another vent! Hazywal, you are so lucky! I am jealous :) you will love it there! Good luck with your move. Hopefully it will be a place of delightful responsible owners. We were there earlier in the year and it was so doggie friendly. All dogs were actually on leash. -

I have thought about calling the ranger, but it is more the ' when will they eventually turn up' that may see the offenders leave before they get there. There have been so many times I wish I could just Dial a Ranger. It is not just at the lake, but in public. People and their right to have their dog off leash when it is supposed to be on leash!! I didn't know there are now 3 areas. I know the kind of secluded one on the left just as you enter. It is a big round bit surrounded by trees. The other one is next to the stream . I take my girl there when there are no dogs around. Where is the 3rd? Where else do people walk their dogs? I don't mind seeing other on leash dogs on the walk. Walking around the 'burbs gets abit boring at times. Silentchild, that is awful about your poor dog! Hope the owner got an earful! -
I go to Lillydale Lake a fair bit. It is a nice open area and all dogs must be on leash, unless you are in one of two designated off leash areas. I know all dogs are on leash, I can see far up ahead and I don't get ambushed by off leash dogs. But lately a minority have taken it as their right to have their dogs off leash in non designated off leash areas. One older woman even has the hide to pedal all around the 2.5 km track with off leash her dog running beside her. Sometimes the dog is way behind or out in front. I told her off last time and she told me to mind my own business. Oh well. Today I had someone else's dog run up to mine. I said dogs must be on leash. She said mine is well trained and whatever. And that older woman's dog snuck up/ approached someone else's dog from behind and the older guy had to pull his dog away. Why is it that some people have so much difficulty following a clear and simple instruction? There are signs all around the track that clearly say dogs must be on leash, unless in an off leash area. I am just so fed up of people just doing their own thing with no regard for anyone else. The world would be a much better place if people just had some consideration and respect for others. And this applies to stuff in general too, not just dog stuff. Ok vent over.

Ottawa Shooting - Victim Was Single Dad And Dog Lover

I had tears reading article and seeing the pictures, especially of his 2 dogs. My heart goes out to his son and his poor family. Really. What is the world coming to. -
His owners have taken steps to be responsible owners. Give them some credit. It is not their fault some nong decides to be stupid and enter the property despite the signage! Why does the dog have to pay because some meter reader ignores signs on THEIR property.

What Food Can Your Dog Not Resist?

Oh no :) Is everyone feeling a little better this morning? The poor little ones -
Really sorry to hear about your older pup and what you are going through I really feel for you as we were ignored by our ( supposedly reputable, ethical, show judge ) breeder. When we wanted resolutions to his issues, we were completely cut off. We took ours to small claims and won. It was more the principle than the financial. So sorry for your puppy's eyesight and OCD.

Has anyone seen those Canex worming tablets that come with the Revolution flea stuff? Those big round pink tablets? I just use the open mouth and pop them in method. Much easier when you have a large dog though :) My boy has been on antis for 3 months, he actually comes to me as he knows he gets a treat after. -
That is pretty much me to a T. As OH never wanted a dog ( too busy, not enough time, too many pets already ), our two mean the world to me. And he adores them to the moon and back. I don't take them for granted, given dogs only live such a short time.

Love the photos! Your pooches are so cute! Was the hire for your 10 days dear?
-
Yes the Northern Victorian Dog Sled Club goes there.
-
Awww they are all so cute! Great pics! :)

That is horrifying and beyond unethical. Can you please PM the name of this breeder? And what he breeds now?
-
I quite like this option. I have a very high prey girl. Twice I was negligent to putting all the chooks away. So on two separate occasions, I let her out into the yard and the poor chookies were out, she got the one I didn't put away each time. And other time the rat managed to squeeze herself out from under her cage door. All three times were my fault not my girl's. I am always hyper careful but with the chooks but my brain had a moment. I know my breed and I blame the owner not the dog. So definitely not the put to sleep. My girl would be dead already no thanks to my stupidity!

The owners of these breeds that want to train them to have a reliable recall don't love their dogs less because they want them to be able to enjoy freedom off leash at the beach, park etc. As I said above I don't understand why any owner would choose not to train a the most reliable recall they possible can, even if they never intend to let their dogs off leash. Recall is essential in my mind, if my dog wasn't coming back to me every time I called I would see that as a serious problem. If you are talking about being in an enclosed and off leash area with these breeds in particular, then training effective recall is the way to go. But I am specifically saying about these breeds being off leash just anywhere, not necessarily in an enclosed . So in my above context, off leash and not enclosed, I am not gambling with their lives.
