  1. Have started doing some desensitisation training for Ronin with the help of our trainer. We wanted to get him more comfortable with man-handling for things like checking for grass seeds, ticks etc and also to make vet visits and grooming more comfortable for all involved. This is my 7 year old daughter employing some of the techniques :)
  2. Hi all, Firstly this is not my boy, but someone on a husky forum that is having problems and was wondering what the brains-trust here thought. It seems he has done all the right things with vets and second and third opinions. Its kinda got me stumped the only thing I can clutch at is maybe he has developed an intolerance to a particular food as Zinc Responsive Dermatosis would have been my first guess, but he has been tested for this? See his post below. "I was wondering if anyone out there was having skin issues with there husky and did they find anything that works? My husky's name is Dakota and he is 11 yrs old and going strong. The only problem I have is he has developed a skin irritation this past year. I have had him to three different vets and nothing has really worked after the antibiotics are gone he starts at the spots he has worn off. It started under his skin at first and notice you could pull his fur off down to the skin. The vets shaved him quite a few places and put him on antibiotics and some fungal pills but after they whore off back to the same old thing. One vet gave him a shot and some fungal shampoo/ medicated and I have bathed him twice in it and it works for about three days. Does any one else come across this problem? He has had the following tests, thyroid, zinc, ring worm all negative. Hope some one else has run into this. "
  3. Can you please give me some links to information about this? Keen to read more as I am considering putting my dog on Vit C due to bladder issues (pH is too high - Vit C can apparently bring it down) but haven't come across any warnings like this. I read it on this forum some time ago, I think it was Dr Bruce Syme from Vets All natural, but I may be way off, which is why I am asking here :) And thanks sas for your informative post :) I have definitely read it a few times, just not sure where and whether or not that would be reliable sources- i have read too many things! :D My thoughts exactly, but it did seem to be logical :)

  5. Ahhh, don't show me a new version #%!#%$##! :D But as others say they are light and breath so heating up in not an issue :-) I am very conscious of not overheating Ronin when we walk, which is why I chose the Hurtta one. They are also really easy to put on as this was something that concerned me as Ronin is not into me putting 'clothes' on him :)
  6. Yeah, as Lisa said its really only the undercoat that needs protecting and then only if it a real long steady downpour. We are about to head out for the evening 6km and it is just spitting so I won't take the coat - which means it will probably bucket down LOL
  7. Very nice Nova, make sure we speak to our parents first if we ever go out together in public - it would be soooo embarrassing to be seen wearing the same outfit :D
  8. Probably saying, what the hell are we doing out in this weather :D
  9. Don't get me wrong, I think it is great stuff for a whole host of doggy uses. As I mentioned I would use it for any cough symptoms or respiratory issues. Just more interested in long term use for healthy athletic dogs and the reduction of natural ability for dogs to produce their own :) I think holistic vets are very big into using it in quite large doses for extended periods of time.
  10. Rain, hail, sleet or snow the boofhead still needs his walk LOL. Just back from a brisk 4km walk in the pouring rain. I was about to list the jacket for sale as I have had it for a long while and never used it. Glad I kept it as it is pouring with rain. Normally the rain just sheets off Ronin's coat but if it gets through to the undercoat it takes ages to dry and I didn't want to risk it today.
  11. I am looking for opinions on vitamin C for dogs... My understanding is that dogs produce their own vitamin C albeit at a low level as would be required for normal health. There are some people in the sled dog world that add additional Vit C to the diet for a host of supposed health benefits including boosting the immune system. My understanding is that prolonged dosing of Vit C can inhibit the dogs normal function of being able to produce their own. I have used it in the past for 5 days when Ronin picked up a cough at the park and combined with TA 36+ Jarrah honey fixed him up very quickly and know that it can work at an antihistamine too. So I am interested in your thoughts on this supplement for working dogs and doggy athletes :) I am only talking about Vit C suitable for dogs (calcium ascorbate and sodium ascorbate)
  12. THanks happy paws, Great that you gave it a go with your lab, plenty of other breeds do it - even some greyhounds and bull terriers. I think if you take it as being just a fun thing to do with your dog/s then it is okay for almost everyone Obviously Huskies, Mallies and GSPs excel in it but it really doesn't matter as long as you have fun. We are certainly in it just for fun and there are some that are super competitive. Probably going for a training run early on Sunday morning :-) Cold weather and rain forecast so am glad I decided against a bath for Ronin :D Yeah look it certainly is good weather ... If your a husky !! I thought Ronin was Teflon coated .. No bath needed ;) You are right, they do have a teflon coat and he gets a bath once every 6 months he was a bit grubby from camping, but I gave him a good brush today and he is nice and clean again

  14. Which is why he's such a happy chappy!!! ... and why I am so exhausted  and now I am off for his evening walk :)
  15. Thanks BC :) :) :) He does have a pretty full life and busy social schedule LOL
  16. If you make a bone stock yourself next time you can add this in and it should take care of the calcium needs, not only that but you will be making a great home made stock without the salt and preservatives found in the ready bought stuff Duh, I see Corrie basically said the same thing LOL
  17. Ronin made it to the front cover of the sled dog association magazine
  18. Oh wow, that's wonderful. what a happy and handsome boy
  19. Unka Jase, I you. You understand the hunger of a young boy dog. Back at ya buddy - we dawgs have gotta stick together !
  20. That does sound positive Am I ever unpopular? The pet shop no longer stocks these. The Horrible One said thank you for nothing, Momma. Then proceeded to kill x2 biros ( belonging to DaddyVizsla) & doing a snake dance with my pantyhose. He was singing the song of his people..... Feed me, Momma! Feed me! I want food. Sorry HH, Mum will just have to go and get some Croc fillets to make up for it :D
  21. Let us know how you go, I feed my own raw but am always interested in other food types :)
  22. Thanks DDD :) He does, but we all know that he is just a clown and very often covered in mud
