  1. I've put yes to both - but i do show under a different system (UK) so we have no chance of cheap/petrol champions. We have don't have that many chances to win CC's during the year. When I started showing Giants, there were a lot of very good dogs being shown and there were good numbers of them. Thanks to 3 dominant dogs in the breed over the last decade, we now are lucky to get a third of the entry we used to have - afterall, there was no need for people to keep males when they had next to no chance to beat the winning canine face of the time. So the breed lost potential stud dogs into pet homes, then the breed lost quality and got itself into a bottle neck with bloodlines. Did the owners of these top dogs really have to compete at every possible champ show for years at a time? Did they even need to turn up at shows without tickets? Would it have really hurt them to leave that dog at home 'some' of the time to allow the other quality dogs to gain a title? So, yes i would keep out of the ring a dog who could/would beat another to allow it to gain a title. I also think it is sporting to allow others the chance to make up a dog who can't get past one dog - not being able to beat one particular dog doesn't make that dog of less quality, good dogs should be allowed to gain a title. I like the FCI way, where the ticket gets passed down the line to the untitled dog - so long as it is already graded excellent.
  2. How are you planning to use the scissors? ie would you be better getting a coat king instead?
  3. I get the vet to do it when they all go in for the day after birth check up, I put mum in car while it is done. When i was able to go to the docking vet, I would assist all through the process and they shouldn't make a fuss about them being done (though they did complain about being put on their backs!) i prefer to get it done sooner rather then later.
  4. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/20...ngered-animals/ I must have the dumb, isn't this like crossing poodle with labrador and continuing to have variations of that cross breed and then claim the breed is pure poodle?
  5. Was Mia hurt by Riley during that final ride in the car?
  6. I can't give my minis any sort of pork product as it goes through them to quick! Try giving him chicken wings instead.
  7. try feeding them outside and have a playtime/toilet session outside as soon as they are mobile. I bang my ring on the metal feed dish, so they learn to follow that sound as it means food!
  8. http://www.overhill.co.uk/exports/index.htm try talking to someone used to quarantine and importing dogs to the UK - they maybe able to sort out some rabies vaccines for you. They are also used to dealing with showdogs, should you need to use the kennels for a short time.
  9. What breed was the crufts BIS bitch? In the UK we can show neutered dogs alongside entires (so long as it is reported to the kennel club), however, the males are still at a disadvantage as the breed standards do call for 2 fully decended testicles. Just because a dog is entire when shown, doesn't mean it will ever be bred from anyway, some people just like to have a dog to show and don't want to get into the breeding side.
  10. Id get a new one sooner rather then later, the two youngsters will soon team up for games and leave the old boy alone.
  11. You just know when you have a heart dog - I'm lucky to have lived with a few over the years.
  12. White shampoo doesn't work on saliva staining, it doesn't just wash off.
  13. Ok, first the dog has to be microchipped, this is checked BEFORE the rabies vaccine is given, 28 days later you can have blood drawn to test the titre levels are high enough - if the dog fails, it has to have another vaccine and another 28 day wait before taking more bloods. Once the titre level is checked as OK, the dog can enter the UK 6 months from the day the blood was taken (not date of vaccination!!!) If you want to bring the dog over earlier, it can do the remaining time in quarantine - ie if it was 5 months since bloods taken for rabies, it can just do the final month in quarantine. The dog also needs treating for fleas/ticks and worms 24 - 48 hours before entry into the country, this must be done by a vet and documented in the Passport.
  14. Which is fair enough as if they do it often it can be quite a burden and sour it if it's a constant financial drain. Yes, I mentioned open shows, but unless the judge is giving tickets at a champ show, then they will not get paid any expenses. Last month I judged at SKC champ show, no tickets for the breed I judged, so I had to pay for the petrol used on the 4+ hours drive there and 4+ hours drive home, for my trouble i got a cup of coffee on arrival and a not very good lunch. For comparison, our open shows usually have 300-500+ entries, champ shows about 8,000 entries
  15. So will your breed standard automatically change after ours on the 1st nov, or will it take a request from the breed clubs for the latest update to become the breed standard you use there?
  16. Not in Australia becks. Some of our country shows are quite laid back. I have had judges call me to the ring and ask me to organise a drink of some sort and I didn't win. I have had judges tell me often about shows where they had to ask exhibitors to get a cold drink for them. Some shows are just poorly run and/or don't have enough people to help. Must have been good a show to get morning tea delivered. Really? It is so difficult for the secretary to buy a crate or 2 of bottled water? I'm on a committee who runs a successful Premier Open show (probably averages similar numbers to your champ shows), we do this with 6 committee members at the show who are stewarding, providing refreshements for judges/stewards along with the necessary paperwork that goes with the show day and all the other little jobs. We are there early to set up the rings and tidy up at the end of the day. It's just courtesy to see the judges are being taken care of on the day - they judge for no payment and usually aren't offered any fees to cover their expenses. At the end of the day, we have all paid the same fee to enter under that judge, we should all be given the same time and consideration by the judge - in return we should all treat the judge in the same manner. Does the exhibitor who turns up with a present for the judge (be it cake or $100!!) expect their win (should they recieve a win) to be untainted by their actions? The show world is full of rumours, accusations etc etc so why add fuel to that fire?
  17. maybe it is something to bring up at the next meeting?
  18. Doesn't look good, when done to just the ring they will later be judged in - it's up to the committee to provide refreshments to the judge. Hope the judge washed their hands after having a cream scone - imagine trying to get the jam out of your dogs coat!
  19. most of my minis have done it, 2 atm manage to fully stretch out as they lie like this
  20. Poo Pooh is a bear Just what I was going to say! When I first saw the 'pooh' spelling, I thought you were all being wierd about dog toys!
  21. I'd be interested to hear back on that!
  22. The UK Kennel Club will the adding the white colour onto the breed standard for the Miniature Schnauzer. I think the Aus BS is taken from the UK one, so I'm wondering if it will be automatically updated at the same or similar time to the breed standard here - or will it take a push from the breeders over there to get the change made, if they wanted the white colour adding?
  23. Going from the UK perspective - any dog can be exported but only those with a restriction free pedigree/registration can be registered with a new registry. ie there is nothing to stop you moving abroad with your dog but unless the export restriction is lifted, the dog couldn't be registered in the new country. It is up to the breeder of the litter, if they want to send a pup abroad, then they just don't put the export restriction on that pup - that pup is a different individual to the adult who has the restriction on. Semen? i would imagine that it would be OK to send abroad, afterall the dog is staying in the country and that is the point of the export ban....
  24. ;) Beat me to it! :p The number of times Ruby has been a "red schnauzer"... Yes, Izzy too - especially as she's schnauzer size.... Do they come in teacup size? this one looks a bit tall and lanky. Maybe something with a flat face, these beards just get to messy
  25. It's not just a case of how active a 65 year old - will they still be active over the next 10 years or so? What would happen to the dog if their health goes? My dad was 65 when he took on his current dog, he didn't want a puppy (and thought his partner was mad when she bought a poodle puppy who was almost to much work for them and has developed issues), anyhoo, my dad is very happy with his dog who is now 7 years old, active enough to enjoy going to the park or beach for walks and then happy to just lie around the house the rest of the day (the dog that is! lol ) A good breeder would never sell you a dog to give as a gift to someone else.
