  1. That one is a cross breed! Even the breeders of them acknowledge that as fact. Also known as 'confetti schnauzers'
  2. amanda do you know your signature stretches the page much wider then the normal page width on here?
  3. thanks Hesa (maybe this topic should be the next DOL book? )
  4. The red and blue rings on the brush denote how stiff/hard the bristles are on it. Without checking mine, I can't remember which one is the softest though.
  5. You can buy a short lead and sucker cup attachement to stick to the wall behind the bath, then you dog is held in place giving you more freedom to keep her calm and get on with the task at hand without worrying about sudden break outs from the bath. Also when you are done, lift the dog from the bath - allowing them to jump out of a bath or from a grooming table sends then mixed messages about what theya re and aren't allowed to do.
  6. black and tan giant schnauzer. they used to be a recognised colour in the USA and Canada until the mid 80's when the colour was thought to have dropped out of favour black and silver giant in this group is the white miniature, recognised on the UK breed standard since nov 1st 2010 but much longer under FCI
  7. the other thing is not to wait in the waiting room at the vets, so you aren't infecting the other dogs in there.
  8. As the title says, can anyone recommend any good books on the subject? (not the Feed you dog bones book as that is so dry and boring it cures my insomnia!)
  9. If you want to compete with some real numbers, try the UK - champ shows of several thousand entries and then there is Crufts!
  10. have you offered them one of the boys? will these people have her on breeding terms or are we talking waving good bye to the chance to breed on from her? how much use would she be for the next generation you breed, as opposed to the males?
  11. I much prefer the girls. I prefer the more independent nature and that they can have different moods. I've had 4 males and 3 have been rehomed, as I just didn't bond with them, like I do with the girls.
  12. I've been a groomer for 17 years, prior to that I groomed my own show dogs, so knew the skills, just not the styles for other breeds. i did a 3 month residential course, working 5.5 days a week at the salon, learning 'on the job' I continue to keep skills up to date by attending workshops and talking to other breed exhibitors at shows about the finer points of their breed trims. Unless you are buying all the equipment for your own dogs, I would hold off and see if it is the job for you. There is a lot of hard work and nasty parts to the job, along with the physical side to the job.
  13. Yes, mine follow the same pattern most of the time. Mine tend to have a first season at 5-6 months of age, Amber was the exception and was nearly 10 months old, her daughter went back to the same pattern as the rest of the family though. The Giants (aunty and neice) were both 10 months for a first season. So you can use family history as a guide, rather then a blue print or reason to panic if they aren't following the same pattern.
  14. Could it have been packed up in someone elses kit by accident - it does happen!
  15. You could consider a T-touch wrap or the equifleece t-shirts are also recommended if they are a snug fit. DAP is not to be sprayed on the dog, it should be sprayed onto bedding or into the room/car. You can spray it onto a bandana or t-shirt and then put that onto the dog before they get into the stressed situation. With ttouch, the key thing is keeping the touch very light, most people who learn about it from books are to heavy handed, the fingers should only just move the skin of the dog and the movements should be really slow.
  16. You can buy various grooming attachements for the vacuum. On a recent infomertial, there was even an long extention that has a tube going to a bucket that collects the dog hair then another tube that reaches to the dog with a brush on the end of the tube, this way the vacuum can be in another room and not upset the dog!
  17. If you call them on it at the show, the dog may well suffer more later on if that person felt embarrassed by your comments. As for telling the breeder - if they are in another country, just what could they do to help the dog? Probably nothing.
  18. you could just use a couple of the panels as a roof, over the bunnings wire pen.
  19. I've known drontal cause problems, I've never had aproblem with panacur, but don't think you can get it in Oz?
  20. I would go back to the vet and at the very least get some painkillers and anti inflams. Schnauzers can be quite a hard breed when it comes to showing pain, especially at the vets - my giant is just the same. Keep up with resting him. Have you felt for any hot spots to give a clue about where he is hurting? It could be anywhere on the foot, leg or even in the spine.
  21. Borders are very easy to do yourself, especially when the coat is already 'blown' and practically falling out on its own. All you need to leave is a little beard and just pull out the rest a few hairs at a time.
  22. First get the eyes checked for things like extra eye lashes, in turned eye lids, blocked tear ducts etc.
