What are you doing when you recall her? I have found calling and then running away works quite well. Also if you do it fairly frequently, before they get too far away.
-
No I don't think what Bernard is doing is good. I used to have the same problem - Zoe would growl at Diesel if Diesel came near me. I don't know what I did to fix it I think it fixed itself when I got Kaos as they are best mates. Or maybe I did more training with them together? Can't remember.

I always feed separately (in crates). That way you know how much they are getting, if anyone is off their food, and nobody can be intimidated away from their dinner. Everyone can eat in peace

I'll work on getting some images on this computer. The breeder is: http://www.skipsabit.com/ As far as I can gather (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, Schipp people) most of the Schipperkes in Australia are related in some way due to the small numbers. I was told my Schipp was the most outgoing, dominant, active of the litter, so it might be more important to find the right dog in the litter rather than the right breeder. Thank you

I love Schipps Definitely need pics :D Would love to know the breeder of your dog - love the fellas but have been told some lines are better for sports than others.

Just A Heads Up. They're Back! It's Snake Season Again
Kavik replied to LizT's topic in General Dog Discussion
Most dogs would kill free ranging ground birds? Or at least harrass them. -
The brochure says it is fine to put on the dog after washing once the dog is dry, but you have to wait a few days to wash them after application.

Does Anyone Know Where I Can Find This Lead?
Kavik replied to Kirty's topic in General Dog Discussion
NDTF make ones like that -
I have worked for WIRES in the call centre, and the snake people were all very lovely and helpful but it was sometimes difficult to find someone available in some areas in a hurry especially over the busy summer period when everyone is run off their feet with calls. Priority was obviously given to snakes in dangerous areas, and one just meandering through your yard was not as high a priority as one in a house or school etc. I am near Hornsby. ETA: They do a great job, just with the high volume of calls over summer it is not always possible for them to get to every snake in someone's yard. I was really amazed at the number of snake calls we had coming in.

I worry too, have seen a few snake skins, and last year saw a couple of snakes. Volunteer snake handlers are very passionate about their snakes, but will not often come out if it is just in your yard unless in a dangerous place and it can sometimes take them a while to get there (as snakes often move on by then).

Deejay - what kind of dog is it? Trick training is a great way to keep them occupied and doesn't require a lot of space That's all I have done so far today due to the heat, hopefully it cools down later and I can take them for a walk.

If your dog is aggressive towards other dogs, there is no way you should be going to a dog park! Get help from a trainer or behaviourist for the aggressive behaviour. Until then you just have to suck it up and walk on lead only. It is not fair on others or your dog to expose them to aggressive behaviour. For a run around, do they know anyone with some space where the dog can run every now and again? And I do have a dog aggro dog, so I know how it feels. I wish I had gotten proper help MUCH earlier with my dog. Here is someone they could try (for the Sydney person) http://www.k9pro.com.au/ What wouldn't hurt is to do some focus exercises so they can get the dog's attention back on them when it sees another dog.

I would hold off on giving the worming tablet if he is still sore. I had mine on soft food for a while until he was acting normally (read barking as much as usual ) and then started on normal food. Will give bones a go this week

Crates are not essential BUT they make life a lot easier. For reasons others have outlined. Great for travel - they have a safe, familiar place to relax, will be welcome in more places if you take them on holidays Great for training/competition - again somewhere safe and familiar for them to relax when it is not their turn, or when you have to help set up equipment, walk courses, instruct classes In case they ever need to be confined due to illness, injury, at the vet or groomers they are used to it and will relax instead of get stressed Somewhere they can be safely confined when tradespeople come, guests who don't like or are scared of dogs, or for your dog to have a haven from children or storms or fireworks

About 4 weeks ago I had a very similar presentation with one of my dogs. I would get his teeth and jaw checked at vet (we had to do this under anaesthetic - our ended up sore jaw but good to check teeth in case). Was vet nurse rough giving tablet? I think I know what caused my problem. MMM was mentioned but vet said it was such a remote possibility, simplest is usually right. We did anti-inflams and soft food and also went to chiro and he is fine now.

I love trick training! Though I primarily do agility, not obedience, and there are a lot of tricks that are helpful for agility/body awareness. Plus they are so much fun!

Clipping A Double Coated Breed
Kavik replied to aussielover's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I wouldn't think clipping a Lab would make it that much easier to find a tick? It would also have to be a very short blade as they have a short coat anyway, and clipping that short would leave them open to the sun I would think? I can see how it would make it easier on say a Samoyed or Goldie though. I wouldn't clip a double coated breed if I could help it - their coat does help with temperature control, acts as a barrier to the elements. -
I want my dog to be able to walk calmly past other dogs on walks. If you want to allow your pup to say hi to another dog, ask the owner first, don't get offended if they say no as their dog may not like visiting other dogs or puppies. Don't allow your pup to pull you over to other dogs, straining on the leash, even if the owner says it is OK to say hi.

I'm kind of in the same boat as CaseyKay. Zoe (12 years) has aggression issues so I was not able to compete with her. Diesel (nearly 8 yrs) has health problems so I was never able to compete with him. So I have Kaos (5 yrs) as my only competition dog. At the moment looking at breeders for the next dog but not sure when that will be yet. Would like to have Kaos in Masters first and iron out a few little competition issues and be sure of how I want to train the next one first, but so jealous of my friends who have recently gotten or just about to get new pups!

to Andrew Marchevsky - great surgeon and great guy. ETA: He fixed Diesel's broken leg (spiral fracture - needed external fixatur), kept me well informed, and also helped when Zoe was attacked by another dog (and I was a bit frantic ). He is personable and easy to talk to.

I LOVE the surface. Sometimes it's a bit hard to pull up 90+kg and turn, but the dogs seem to love it and really it doesn't chop up that much. sometimes the big dogs cause a bit of a headache around the weavers, but overall I think people and dogs love it. (Just sux having dogs with white on them!) Thanks I only weigh around 43 kg so might not be the same when I turn Sounds interesting - hopefully I'll get to try it out sometime!
