Stuff To Do With Your Dog In Orange
Kavik replied to Chequeredblackdog's topic in General Dog Discussion
Don't know anything around Orange sorry, but do understand about the licence! Before I got my licence OH would drive me to training, it was hard and he was always complaining. It was so great when I finally got it and can go places myself You will get there! -
I used to go to Manly & Districts so am trying to remember him - think I did meet him but don't remember much. Garry Somerville was head instructor when I was there (I certainly remember Garry!) - was a long time ago  ETA: I only attended the classes in Mosman so didn't meet any of the instructors at Deep Creek Reserve

Feeding Breakfast Before A Trial
Kavik replied to sheena's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Kaos has done that too  But I think what has fixed the issue is two things - our working on tugging around the treat bag and in general training with the treat bag on the ground and rewarding only from my person/pockets. I am not using a treat bag at training at the moment, putting my rewards (food and toys) in pockets or sticking toy in back of pants, and rewarding on my person. That seems to have taken the focus off the treat bag so he doesn't tend to run off to check it out any more. Always a good idea to make sure it is closed so she can't self reward if you are worried about her checking it out :) -
I know Nekhbet, my two hadn't been washed in about 3 months  My GSD only gets an Annual bath, each Summer. But lots and lots and lots of grooming. :) Lucky you! I have to do mine every week!

Feeding Breakfast Before A Trial
Kavik replied to sheena's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi MRB :) I use soft treats (cheese) before my run to get focus - I use a treat bag and do this while waiting my turn. When it gets close to our turn (a few people away) I pick a small amount out of the treat bag, place treat bag at finish, and do focus exercises before my run, keep an eye on the number I have so I don't end up with too many right before we run, normally give the last one as we are about to go into the ring. I place my treat bag with toy and treats in it on the ground outside the ring near the finish line. Then as soon as we finish I can reward him :) At the moment I put his lead on, give him his toy to carry, and move quickly to an area where we I can throw his toy for him (as he won't tug at a trial yet). -
Feeding Breakfast Before A Trial
Kavik replied to sheena's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I feed my dogs in the evening, so no they don't get breakfast on the day of a trial. ETA: if training or night time trial, they don't get fed until we get home. They get plenty of treats at training and trials though! -
Great to hear good stories!
-
Congratulations! Great result!

What if the breed is an Australian breed? Eg cream in Kelpies. Crop up regularly in working line litters, not an allowable colour to show.

That is a good point Erny!

I first saw the electronic table at the D2D trial. Initially I was a little apprehensive as this was our first trial in about 6 months and not the ideal circumstances to try new stuff (we took a break due to focus issues), but we had a go on it early in the morning when it was set up along with most other people (thanks Le!) and most dogs including Kaos had no problem wih it. He was fine with it in the trial as well (it was those darned weaves that caused us grief  ). It was also our first time seeing a weesaw in competition, though at training the seesaw was lowered (the one time this year that training wasn't rained out that the seesaw came out that is!) so he had tried a lowered seesaw before (though training is ADAA specs). Actually I think my biggest equipment issue is the dogwalk as I train at an ADAA club, so has slats on the dogwalk, and trial mostly ANKC where there are no slats. And our performance on the dogwalk is noticeably different and slower/more hesitant at trials.

I agree juice it is rude for a dog to rush another. shiner, unfortunately I can get scared when rushed by another dog. The one who was attacked is dog aggressive, and while she has improved somewhat, she will react to a dog rushing her (she is walked on lead), and a full blown dog fight or her being attacked is not what I want to deal with. Watching your dog get severely attacked and not being able to stop the other dog will effect how you view out of control dogs - and a dog rushing up to yours IS out of control, and I do sometimes get upset with the owners.
-
One of my dogs was very badly injured when attacked by a bull breed and none of my dogs like being rushed by them, so I think it is entirely justifiable to be wary of them if they are rushing you and your dogs. Even if they are friendly, things can go pear shaped very quickly and IME if something starts they can take offence easily and are difficult to stop.

Sure, try morning and night, see what works, experiment with the times.

Can you try feeding at certain times of the day instead of free feeding? That should also help with keenness for training and eating. It is harder to know when they will need to toilet if they are allowed to graze all day, also hard to know how much they are eating. My adult dogs are fed once a day in the evening (unles GSD is on medication, then twice a day for him for the meds).
-
When they toilet is also partly governed by when they eat. What time do you feed her? Have you tried changing the time you feed her to see if this helps?

Just quicky skimmed the Crufts terrier group judging to see when this happens, only saw 2 people do it - with the Scottish Terrier and Sealyham terrier. Saw a few others support neck and under bottom.

Very cute! Love the sables!

Labs Doing Agility And Obedience And Gsps Vs Viszlas

Nice runs! -
My understanding is that some animals do go into an excitement phase initially when given lethabarb, and this must have been very upsetting to witness

Some dogs just have more health problems than others. My GSD is rather accident prone - broke a leg at 6 months (just running around and collided with my other dog) has chronic skin problems (allergies) and has had a couple of other accidents. My other dogs have had a couple of accidents but nothing like the amount of vet visits as my GSD. I value my dogs because they are DOGS and not children! I have children (2) and the dogs are my sanity saviour at times  Dogs are amazing as they are - they can do some things we cannot totally comprehend and certainly things that we cannot do. I continue to learn new things everyday from my dogs.
