  1. Is it really that important to you that you are able to let him run in the dog park? If it is really important that he run with other dogs what about finding some friends who have dogs that you know he will be OK with or who are at least very well behaved so you can work on his behaviour, rather than meeting random dogs at the dog park?
  2. Two organisations I follow on Facebook (one rescue, one herding) post updates, photos and videos suggesting that buying from a breeder means a pound dog dies and the comments always get lots of likes from other people following them. They don't otherwise appear to be 'radical' groups. I have both purebred and rescue dogs. I have had temperament issues with my rescue, only just coming around to the idea of another if the right young adult dog comes up (did recently see a pound photo that made me consider him ), have had health problems with the purebred but unpapered dog. So will either be registered purebred puppy or the right young adult rescue, depending on what is around and whether I feel up to retraining a young adult or start fresh with a pup. My breed of choice is overrepresented in pounds and there are a lot of breeders to choose from as well! Makes the choice very complicated and difficult!
  3. I agree with Haredown Whippets. I would say general opinion of the public is that dog parks are good for socialising puppies. I used to think this way at one point too, until my dog turned dog aggressive. Many people don't understand what could happen. After some thinking and insight from a course i am doing, I think my dog aggro dog is easily aroused/overaroused, and this overarousal with other dogs turned into aggression.
  4. PAX gets my tick of approval for boarding!
  5. No I don't want mine mixing with strange dogs if I board them. One of my dogs is dog aggressive, so it is very important that she is not run with dogs other than my own, and that they are separated at feeding time. I am very careful where I board my dogs for this reason.
  6. Hi all, Where is the best place to buy flea and heartworm meds online? I use Advantix and Interceptor. Also, can you buy Advance dog food online somewhere?
  7. $597 but I think registration has just closed.
  8. I'm in for the stopped contact content! Already some general training/motivational notes/ideas up on the site.
  9. Actually he might care - how would that help his retrieve?
  10. I'm not sure if he would care - I think it wouldn't bother him.
  11. Keep away, or depending on the tug he might lie down with it for a chew. He is on lead now when tugging so he can't do those, but that is what he would like to do!
  12. My fellow likes to posess the tug. Unlike Tilly's dog he does realise he already has it - have tried two toy game lol. He is getting better but still a work in progress - when I started he would brace his legs and refuse to come closer - little bugger! he is now trotting up happily but still sometimes turns his head to prevent me getting it when I go to hold it again. What is interesting is my older girl who I first taught a formal retrieve for obedience will bring the tug back no problem.
  13. Touched, just lightly. Just a suggestion though that I got from another DOLer - don't have to try if you don't think it will work :) It took me 6 months to get my girl holding the dumbell so hang in there. I'll give it a go. May start in small incrememts getting closer to his face though - he can be a bit touch sensitive. Ultimately I'm hoping this will help is retrieve of the tug - I'm coming at it from a few different angles and hoping it all helps
  14. Actually touching the jaw or just underneath but not touching? Kaos is not as good at being handled around his mouth as I would like - would probably baulk. Need to work on that.
  15. I am working on Kaos's formal retrieve with a dumbell and we are also stuck. Also using Shirley Chong. He will eagerly reach for it and put his mouth around it no matter where I put it but does not want to go the next step and actually hold it. If I let go, he drops it and then takes a while to get him happily coming in to take it again.
  16. Thinking about it and I am pretty sure I did a 'naughty' front cross in JDX - whoops! (got the job done though!) Pretty sure I should have done a rear cross but I don't like rear crossing the chute. That's what happens when you don't have a fantastic understanding of the handling system and don't ask for help with walking the course.
  17. Do you only get tickets to the finals if you entered every day of competition or even if you only entered one day (and therefore won't be eligible for finals regardless of result)?
  18. If you don't want leather, the gripper leashes are very nice!
  19. I agree with this (though I prefer Kelpies :D )
  20. I think any of them would get along with older Labs and kids, though youngsters of all those breeds are exuberant and bouncy. They are different, and I would decide based on breed characteristics - build, temp, health, shedding (GSD shed a lot), what you like, how competitive in sports you want to be, etc.
