  1. There are some breeds which are bred to have a lot of prey drive, and having ball drive is not a bad thing Can be very useful for training, or even just exercising them and having fun.
  2. We had one client come into the dog daycare when I worked there with an infin8 head collar. Quite different to other headcollars I have seen (and rather complicated to put on the first time with no instructions  ). The lead goes onto a martingale and the pressure on the nose comes indirectly, you don't have control over the dog's head as you do with other headcollars. So my thoughts is that it is less likely to cause the head to pull sideways suddenly, but also less effective at controlling the dog.
  3. It is probably outlined here http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/vic/consol_act/poctaa1986360/ Going through it but trying to feed the kids lunch so a bit crazy atm lol

    Rip Baby Boy

    So sorry RIP Cooper
  5. Glad he is doing well :) Personally I would avoid the park if you see him there all the time - I know it is not fair and you should not have to, but that's what I would do to avoid future problems. When Zoe was attacked by a bull breed when she was younger, I was sure she was going to die - was a nice $1500 vet bill! Ended up having to take the owners to small claims court (which was uncontested, but they hadn't paid until I did) to get the money from them.
  6. It doesn't seem overly complicated to me - from what I understand from the Kelpie colour link I posted: A dog is either genetically black or brown (same locus - B) With or without tan points (A locus) Then there is dilute of these (D locus. dilute black = blue, dilute brown = fawn) And then red (cream) which is a masking gene (E locus) - the dog will be either genetically black (black nose) or brown (brown nose) but this is masked and the dog will appear cream
  7. There is this one for Kelpies as well :) http://www.hnrworkingkelpies.com/Coat_Colors.html
  8. I don't go to dog parks - recipe for disaster IMO, especially small fenced ones. Only one of my dogs would possibly enjoy it anyway.
  9. Both Zoe and Kaos are very food motivated! Great for training! Diesel likes food but is not as crazy about it as the others.
  10. She has been used in the paddocks and yards to bring the sheep in but she couldn't push the sheep up the shoot/race, which is pretty important in moving sheep around. The dogs run on top of the sheep and then get down and run back underneath, this pushes the sheep up the race and gets them all in, it can be anything from loading them onto a truck to lamb marking but it's pretty important to have a dog that can do it for you. OK not something the collies do here when herding the sheep into pens or trucks Backing is one of the trademarks of the Kelpie! I think the most amazing part of watching Yard Dog trials!
  11. Behaviour motor pattern of prey drive which is orient -> eye -> stalk -> chase -> grab-bite -> kill-bite, heading dogs have a hypertrophied eye, stalk and chase, and a lowered grab-bite and kill-bite - looking it up in the book Dogs: A Startling New Understanding of Canine ORigin, Behaviour and Evolution
  12. My sister is going to try to convince her husband to wait til the kids are a little older. For now they have gotten some hermit crabs :) They also have the 2 family cats that are inside/outside (they are living in the family home - my parents moved overseas and they got the house!)
  13. I would think 2 - 3 times is normal for a puppy? They eat more often and have to go to the toilet more often than an adult dog. Goes for people too  I remember my first would poo every time he had a feed when newborn
  14. Now that is dedication to the sport! What an inspiration!
  15. There are some avenues for high drive dogs - sporting homes, scent detection roles. Not everyone is looking for a couch potato
  16. There are so many more fun things you can do with him besides breeding! :) Come and join us in agility for one :D or one of the many other dog sports - so much fun!
  17. His latest news piece! http://today.ninemsn.com.au/videoindex.aspx?uuid=4abce9fb-2978-4f46-99db-3d1103f02ea8
  18. Oh she's not mine, she's one of the pups from work. I just get to play with her and take her out etc. She is with me most of the time. I never saw myself with a mal, but it is lots of fun :) Lucky you! :)
  19. Same with men at our agility club - we really appreciate them and try to let them know that too
  20. She looks so sweet though! Very pretty girl.
  21. Mine get Blue Tongues too - it's just what dogs do. I watch for them and move them if I see them. No point in getting angry with the dog. I try to keep grass low so less inviting for snakes and lizards, doesn't always work though.
  22. Also think of access to reinforcement, not just obvious 'rewards'. Environmental and life rewards too. Such as going for walks, meeing and greeting dogs/people, chance to sniff, wander, run, swim, etc. You can use them all as rewards for desireable behaviour.
