He's giving you nice weight shift! Nitro is improving with his weight shift, better with some toys than others, but with some toys (like the one you are using) he likes to shake/kill it instead and he regrips more than I would like.

Malamutes are also not as easy to train as the other breeds that have been mentioned.

Bernese Mountain Dog? I remember seeing on one of those dogs with jobs shows that they used them to help with autistic children. GSD Jack of all trades! You would want to research lines though as there is variation in temperament and type.

I would never leave a halti, harness or lead of any sort on my dog while doing agility. I have no problem with a flat collar. I leave my collar on when at training but take it off for competitions.

Thankfully my dog couldn't careless, not even when the little dog takes his ball right from his German Shepard mouth. But I am curious to know what others would do, I feel the command is a good idea because it can stop them from picking up scraps etc when you have guests over. I also think maybe the owners in the youtube clip didn't correct the dog when it first started. If mine started doing this, it would be a quick no and removing the food straight away. My dogs sit and wait for a cue to eat their dinner. Don't think it stops them from picking up scraps though :laugh:

I haven't desexed Nitro yet - want to wait til he matures, and then we'll decide. When I registered him with council I was asked so many times was he desexed, show desexing certificate etc. Got a bit frustrated by the end of it all. Had to explain to several different people more than once that he was not desexed, that I know it is more expensive to register him etc. Same thing when he had to have some baby teeth out that had not come out on their own, the vet and nurse asked me more than once whether I wanted him desexed at the same time. Would be refreshing not to have people ask you all the time!

I walk some of mine separately. Zoe is 14 and dog aggressive, so goes separately. Kaos and Diesel walk together, then I do some training with Kaos and he gets a run while Diesel plods on lead (Diesel is nearly 10 now). Nitro gets walked separately because he is still a bit of a loon :laugh:

Kelpies With people: All of mine LOVE people! Wiggle bum, lean on, jump on , with some you have to watch or you will have a Kelpie in your face giving you kisses even if you are standing :laugh: . I have noticed though that some people who work theirs on sheep have more standoffish dogs with strangers. They will not necessarily obey others though. With dogs: Many don't like to have their space invaded, and are not impressed with forward greeters/body slam type of play eg Labs and Staffies. Some can be standoffish or not interested in other dogs, preferring to play with their human instead. They tend to get on best with other herding breeds - other Kelpies, BCs, Koolies.

I'm probably one of the few people at my club still using GD handling lol - everyone else seems to have jumped ship!

Yes I have heard the glue used in human tennis balls is not good for dogs and that and the coating is abrasive on their teeth. There are now balls made for dogs that are safe for them.

Yes I have read Click to Calm! I really liked it, lots of good ideas and exercises for helping with reactivity. Really increased my confidence in my ability to handle Zoe around other dogs.

Hankdog, I think my Zoe was initially a frustrated greeter, which then developed into dog aggression.

Does your dog have good rear end awareness? What type of finish are you using? Something like perchwork would help with rear end awareness and how to pivot on the spot to stay by your left leg. A really good understanding of heel position also helps - if you place your dog in a sit and then move so that you are angled can your dog find heel position on its own?

I always dilute the shampoo anyway - I find it easier to apply that way (especially for Diesel who has a thick coat). I put the shampoo in a jug then put water in to dilute it (and mix it up), I think as per piper's suggestion that if you talk to him and do it together he might accept it then?

You can just add their drop cue as they are running towards you in the 2 food game, then reward the drop by throwing the food in the direction they were going.

I don't go to dog parks either - too many rude dogs. There are too many rude dogs at daycares too. I would never go to either. But one difference between taking your dog to a dog park and to a daycare is that you are there with your dog at a park, and every dog has its owner with it, whereas at a daycare there are only a few people looking after all the dogs, and you are not there. Which means you can't look after your dog and instead you rely on someone else to keep your dog safe.

I have 2 kids, 6 and 2 1/2 The kitchen is gated off with a baby gate, the dogs have crates in the kitchen. Dogs are only out with the kids if I am supervising, otherwise they are outside or in crates. Becoming a bit more tricky now that the 2 year old has worked out how to open the baby gate and the crate doors :laugh: (have caught her giving the dogs treats, magnets and toothpaste through the crate bars before I found a solution!) so I have to tie the gate shut if I don't want her going in there.

Hi :) I know of 2 trainers who specialise in scent detection - Steve Austin and Gary Jackson. Neither of them are in Perth but they would probably either be able to help you or point you in the direction of a local person who can. The user Nekhbet on here may also know of someone. Just a note you only need to start one thread on a topic :) People are not always in front of their computer, sometimes it can take a little while for people to respond.

I have noticed that some dogs do seem to attract negative attention from other dogs. Maybe something about her body language? I'm not sure. Could you get footage of her meeting another dog (not one where she gets hassled, just one with a nice dog) and post it, then we could look at how she approaches other dogs and see if there is something there that triggers it. One that comes to mind for me was a dog that was quite submissive, and other dogs hassled it. Another was a hermaphrodite.

I wouldn't do a daycare either with a dog that tends to get picked on - it will get picked on there too.

Even if you cloned your dog, it would not be the same. It wouldn't have had the same life experiences that shaped your dog into what it is. I like the individuality of each of my dogs, and when they are gone will enjoy forming new relationships with different dogs.

Probably rats - friendly, fun to watch and intelligent! Too bad we can't get rodents other than rats and mice here, both of which I have had as pets - I would really like to try gerbils - I remember a friend had them when I lived in the USA - they were pretty neat! In the US I also had hamsters.
