It looked like a pretty small piece of meat he was holding! I would want a much bigger target (meal) for a croc if I was feeding it!

So it is very similar to working within critical distance. With Zeph we currently work alongside the main group. When he is paying attention, watching and working well he gets his ball. When we move closer to the dogs and he stops working and starts whining, we move away and he does not get his ball. So he only gets access to the other dogs and his ball on my terms. Is this the same situation? Similar idea. SG is asking a question to the dog - can you work with me (tug) this close to the ball? If not, move further away, how about this close to the ball? If yes, then play/tug, then run to ball. -

In the clip with the GR, she is tugging and using the ball as a distraction - and it creates a DWDH moment (don't wanna don't hafta), which she overcomes by moving further away from the ball and when she gets good quality tugging, she then runs back to the ball. It is more about, you do what I want you to do, and then you can have what you want. She wants him to interact with her before being allowed access to the ball. For many dogs (including mine), this is more of an issue surrounding food and tugs. Leah92 is correct in why SG prefers tug to balls - tug is about interacting with you, chasing a ball is about the chase away from you. In the clip, SG does use the ball as a reward in a way, after she gets the dog to tug he gets his ball. It was a very good demonstration of how to overcome DWDH and how you have to be persistent. Hope that makes sense, let me know if you want a clearer explanation. -
From memory (my girl passed in Feb and also had kidney disease) the important thing was that the protein was one that was easy for them to digest.

There are some games later in the course which might help - at the moment we are value building, later we will be value testing :) There is a game which addresses DWDH (don't wanna don't hafta) which is what raineth is talking about, there is one which addresses giving the dog permission to leave you to visit a person or dog, and others. I must pay more attention to those games this time around, as I have similar issues - my dogs love visiting human friends and Nitro loves visiting dogs as well  -

Some that do scent work for a living prefer using a toy reward! If he loves it, go with it -

I struggle with sizing on the internet because I am very small! Especially with unisex shirts, sometimes even the smallest size is too big. For my club jacket I have just put an order in for a kids size 12  -

In IYC you want them to look at the food, not at you :) so Penny is doing just fine! -

Yes, that is the whole point of Crate Games! That they will release from the crate straight to you and ready to work! What are you up to? If your dog chooses to stay in the crate when you release, you just need to look at the value. Release, wait to see their response, you can wait them out a bit, and if they don't release, close the door and try again. If they come out, have a party! This is where the changed my mind game comes in handy! I find keeping session short, fast and fun helps! I do YOYI, then release and collar grab, send back in, maybe repeat from other side or a different angle, then send them in and do changed my mind, do a few other fun fast games, send him in etc. Have you read the FAQs? Do you have the DVD? -

raineth, From memory, once you have mastered the basics of Crate Games you can transfer that to something else such as a dog bed, chair or table. So I would do Crate Games at home in whatever location you can to the point where you have good understanding - will sit in crate when you touch door, wait for release, YOYI, will go into crate from a distance etc. and then start with dog bed or something else, starting in same location. The only difficulty with using something else is that you don't have a door to close for inappropriate responses. SG often has her dogs on an agility table while waiting their turn. Another thing you could consider is getting an xpen? They generally are lighter and fold up smaller than a crate, and have a door. -

My favourites are some of the ones coming up soon - PB&J, Cookies in the Corner, Restrained Recalls :) Nitro really enjoys IYC and Crate Games, but Kaos who I only started these as an adult, is not as enthusiastic with them. -

What did you find uncomfortable about the third video? SG is certainly persistent with getting the tugging! -
Mine still only get towels or fleece blankets from the reject shop as beds  that way they can 'make' their beds and it is easy to wash, and easy to discard if it gets chewed or badly soiled. Toys are my weakness - as I use tugging as one of my training rewards, I have a lot of different types of toys
-
Trick training! 4 paws in a box walk backwards put toys in a box retrieve random objects roll over beg and many more!

When I asked at my vet, after some discussion as they don't usually do them, they said they charged around $200 for titre testing, so I have chosen to do 3 yearly vaccination instead.

Great for relationship building, as megan said. These games can be part of your warm up, to get your dog excited and ready to go into the ring, or your between exercises rewards in the ring. There are games for building value for heel position (reinforcement zone), stays, self control, test the understanding of your verbal cues for your basic positions of stand, sit, drop. There is also going to be a section on how to build your own games and get input from others, so like minded obedience people can come up with specific to obedience games as well. -

Yes. Actually I think any breed can now compete? But all the BSDs were always eligible to compete.

Yes I have also seen a long haired Mal, and he was a BIG Mal as well lol. Quite possibly also related to Huski's and Mal1's dog, from the same breeder.
