  1. Can you distract him with something? Food or toys or recall?
  2. Western Suburbs Dog Training Club trains at Bressington Park - Tuesday evenings for trialling class, Saturday afternoons for pet classes. I go to the Tuesday evening class. http://www.sinch.com.au/wsdtc/
  3. The ones that do it for me are the poodles coming in that don't want to look like poodles! And the Schnauzers that don't want to look like Schnauzers! They want them to be fluffy and hairy. And the poodles or poodle crosses that don't want the hair to be straight and fluffy but curly. And we have a couple of cockers that don't want to be cockers - again just left hairy.
  4. Don't mind the hijack Actually a fun match is a good idea. Once we actually get Diesel working in new locations as opposed to being excited, stressed and silly, it would be good to practice without the added stress of actual competition. Or I guess I could go to a different club every now and again
  5. He was happy to help, and really likes Divani! (He has a soft spot for Dobes, his parents used to have them). She was good tonight :nahnah: My guys were pretty good too. Still some work to do though with Diesel's stand for exam, but we are getting there.
  6. The only time I got frustrated with the flat collar only policy at agility is when I was taking Zoe who is dog aggressive. So I was supposed to control a dog aggressive Kelpie in a crazy agility environment when on a flat collar? She was fine on equipment and running the course, only when waiting did we have a problem. I ended up bringing her on a martingale, not a problem, actually at least half the people there had dogs on martingales.
  7. Thanks myszka Will tell him about the chocolates :nahnah: stand for exam we need to practice too. Also need my OH for some practice as Diesel is very attached to him when we are out and about, need to get Diesel to not be fussed by where he is.
  8. Will warm him up, maybe he can even help me with something :nahnah:
  9. My OH will be there, the tricky part will be getting him out of the car :nahnah:
  10. Lots of running and a bit of barking Didn't look nearly as pretty as your videos, he was more all over the place. First time he'd seen sheep though. The instructor said he was a tiger and I was going to have my hands full with him! I was in the yard as well as the instructor, I suspect I got in the way! He certainly showed interest! ETA: how old is Tia? Kaos was only about 7 months when we went.
  11. What does he do when you put the lead on? Have you tried putting the lead on and following him around when he moves? Will he come to you with treats with the lead on? What about kneeling down and getting on the floor, have a game, roll a ball, tug etc? Just get him used to having the lead on without trying to take him in a certain direction yet.
  12. What I REALLY need to do is go along and watch some more dogs work so I know what I am supposed to do and what the dog is supposed to be doing . . .
  13. I've only taken Kaos once and didn't video it - would have been a hoot if I did Hope to get along to another one in the not too distant future. CTD - looks good! (coming from someone who has no idea what looks good though ;) )
  14. I also would not suggest alpha rolling your dog . . . It was mentioned in a thread recently http://forums.dogzonline.com.au/index.php?showtopic=88835 Basically dogs do not alpha roll each other, what looks to be an alpha roll is actually one dog CHOOSING to submit to the other, not one dog physically forcing the other on the ground. If you physically force your dog onto its back it might bite you - either out of fear or not accepting the rolling. It is best to try to sort out issues in a way that is safe and is not likely to lead to someone being bitten.
  15. Good luck - I also have an allergy dog! He is currently on cortisone - I have found Alloveen, an oatmeal shampoo, to be the best as the medicated ones made him itch more. We did the food trial and ruled out food allergies - suspect it is a contact allergy, probably the grass or something fun like that! It is worse when he gets stressed. We had it cleared up before Christmas but then went away and left him with some friends and it started up again.
  16. If he is REALLY keen on his food, a ball, or tug he would make a nice competition dog too Diesel is the most laid back out of my bunch his food motivation is great at the moment but he is on pred for allergies right now . . . Ooh can we have a few pics
  17. Does Jasper sleep outside? It sounds like it from your posts. Have you thought about crate training him? That way he can be inside at night and less likely to bark at things so you get some sleep. It also gives him his own space and I have found them invaluable as a place for them to 'chill out'. Mine all sleep in crates from when they are pups. My Kelpie pup who is 10 months can be full on (which is what I wanted - I know I am crazy ) and having him crate trained gives him somewhere to go when he needs an enforced rest and means he can't destroy anything. He is snoozing in there now while we eat dinner, I am off to feed them soon.
  18. On a lighter note my GSD is crashed out in front of the TV as we watch Inspector Rex . . .
  19. I think what is more impotant is what and how you are training rather than how long etc. Same with exercise. What does a typical training session consist of? What methods and rewards are you using? What are your standards? TOT and NILIF do not take a lot of time per day and you get some good focus For example, you can have Jasper sit for everything he likes. Sit to come in the house, out of the house, to get in the car, to get his collar on for the walk, to start walk, etc. Nothing happens until he sits, and only gets to go when you say so.
  20. You certainly sound like you have your hands full! For a start, you could try TOT (Triangle of Temptation) (I think pinned at top of this section?) and NILIF (Nothing In Life Is Free). This would help you to gain some control. Is Jasper keen on food and treats? You said you play tug - is he keen on this or on balls? You want to find out what motivates Jasper - what he really likes. Then you can get him to work for what he likes. I mainly use food with my guys because they are keen on food, it is easy to take with you and you can do a lot of repetitions. Training sessions will help not only to gain control but also help tire Jasper out. Even if you don't have a lot of time, you can do a few short training sessions and this will help.
  21. Vickie That is very helpful advice! I think my OH is certainly a big part of the problem. It seems to be more an issue if we go somewhere in the car, as I can walk to several locations on my own from home and he works fine. I have done some work at home around my OH, he will work but still wants to be with OH at times - he loves my OH! Sometimes I joke that Diesel should be his dog I do exercises that I think I have a good chance of him doing and wanting to do, he enjoys the come fores, and finishes. It is actually very rare that we go somewhere new for a run, it normally is either for training or to visit my or OH's parents. I agree that agility is inherently more rewarding for the dog than obedience. That is part of the challenge of it for me!
  22. Hi Sardog Your dogs were great! Unfortunately Diesel is 3, so a bit late for neutralisation I think Hi country joe Faster pace is great for attention getting, and works really well when he is lagging and being lazy, however sometimes when out and about it is not just normal distractability. He really gets quite worked up sometimes and bounces around. It is worst when my OH is there and my OH doesn't do anything with him except pat him.
  23. Thanks sidoney I might give you a call later
  24. Thanks guys Simple exercises are the way to go then It is frustrating though, because the difference in his behaviour is quite large. He is such a laid back dog in familiar surroundings and such a loon in new places. I think some of it is stress as well as excitement.
