How Much Training Does A Dog Need To Start Agility

What sort of training do you do and how often? Does your Shepherd like to play tug or fetch a ball? If your Shepherd has good prey drive, some drive training may help tire her out. Even something simple that my guys like is hiding a toy in a bag and watch while they figure out how to get it out Or an activity like tracking or scentwork. Or some tricks. Something fun

Certainly a good recall is important. If you are not there yet with recall and some sort of stay position, there is still stuff you can do at home. There was a thread on foundation work a while ago, you can do this with no or little equipment, some of which you can improvise with. -

Ooh, tempting There is still one of mine you haven't met She would certainly prove a challenge for you! -
As far as I know NDTF also sell them (or did last time I was there anyway).

The Blackdog martingales are very nice and easy to fit as you can adjust it once and then buckle it on from then on. Unfortunately I have found with some of mine that they don't give enough control as they seem to respect chain more.

I second the limited slip or martingale idea I have seen some people who still fit these too loosely though! It is important to fit and know how to use any equipment you decide on.

If Feeding Super Premium Why Add Raw?

I like to add bones - helps to clean teeth and they love them! And some variety - eggs and sometimes sardines. -
Possible Leadership Issues....with Food
Kavik replied to ShellyBeggs's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I am the same as PAX Mine are crated or at least separated (Diesel is a messy eater and often eats outside to reduce the spillage ) so I don't have to worry about who is getting what and any spats over food. Especially as Zoe is possessive, it would never work feeding them together. They can be given treats where everyone sits first together no problems, but dinner is separate. If only one dog is causing the problem, maybe that one can eat separately. When it is dinner time mine will go into their crates to wait for their dinner -
I am using the channel method. Haven't done much work on it lately, but was going well. I haven't got a dog up to competition level yet so can't comment on how it goes competition wise, but it has helped Zoe a lot who I had used lures/guides with at the beginning of her training. Kaos is doing the channel method from the start, but I haven't started closing the channel yet with him.

I've looked for turkey necks as everyone is talking about them but can't find them anywhere.
-
Chicken frames are great Mine get some every night, and their teeth look good. TB - camel bone :D where on earth did you get that?
-
Not sure what to suggest about the redness. But when I got Kaos and put a collar on him, he started trying to attack it Seriously, he got quite agitated! I should have seen it was a sign of things to come I would put it on for a bit, and then take it off. Eventually he got used to it, and now wears a collar all the time no problems, including with training collars and recently a bandana. So for getting used to it I would say time is the answer.

I'm with Faolmor - I never even look at the feeding guide! I have a cup I use that is not a standard measuring cup anyway I do a guestimation on how much to feed and then adjust by how they look and feel. More if they are looking on the skinny side, less if they are looking chubby. I generally keep them fairly lean anyway though. I also feed chicken frames, and occasionally eggs and sardines so since I am adding other stuff the feeding guide would not be all that much use.

Kelpie-i I don't know if that makes me feel better or worse Kaos is certainly better than Zoe, as Kaos can often go up and meet another dog as long as it is quiet, and he does seem to like other Kelpies and Border Collies. He is also better at ignoring other dogs. But he can be reactive, and is certainly not what I would say dog friendly in general. It really seems to depend on a few things. I don't take Zoe near other dogs anymore.
-
I'm not sure exactly how common it is - but I seem to be having problems with both my Kelpie and Kelpie cross, and know of a few others on and off this board as well. Despite the fact that both the Kelpie and Kelpie cross had more exposure to other dogs in the critical socialisation period than my GSD, my GSD is the only one who is good around other dogs. The only thing that seems to make sense for me is that there is some genetic component there of reactivity.

The photo one. Stories too I guess

come join us in the Kelpie thread Maybe if all us Kelpie people get together we can also figure out the dog-dog issues Gotta love em :D

I would like to be able to be that pedantic LL - would probably improve our heeling no end I admit I am not perfect in my reward timing. I did try one step etc at a time, and found that in slow pace Diesel was excellent, but not so good in normal and fast pace.

I like the closer style that some people think is crowding but have not gotten reliability with it yet.

I've looked at his website heaps, and drooled over his Malinois ;) I have been thinking about getting his DVD but haven't gotten it yet. Good to hear some positive feedback so it is now definitely on my 'to get' list

Training In Drive Vs "bred For" Instincts
Kavik replied to J...'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
This is a very good question and one that I am wondering myself. I have a feeling I will find out a lot more when Kaos gets to do a bit more herding and learns what it is all about. I think it probably depends on the dog as well - its temperament and how driven it is, as well as what we choose to do with the dog. -
My guys love sardines
